Arianna didn't answer right away. Instead, she eyed Drew carefully, debating if she would trust him not to react as he usually did. It might be more wise to just keep her mouth shut, but she trusted him more than any other guy at school and thought that maybe he could give her some insight into how to find her own good guy. Previous experience should have told her he wouldn't be the right one to ask.
Another minute and the girl still had no said anything. Today had been a good day and she really did not want to ruin it.

Drew blinked back at her, waiting for her to break the silence. When she didn't, he turned back to the lake. "Fine, don't tell me," he grumbled, moping slightly. "I said I'd listen..."

"I know," Arianna muttered, letting out another sigh. She bent over and picked up yet another rock and tossed it into the lake with the others. "It's just....not easy. I don't know what my problem is, beside the fact that I can't trust that none of the stuff that's happened before won't happen again, so...what is there to listen to?"

"It's not you that has a problem," Drew told her, trying his best not to say the wrong thing. "It's the idi... guys who have the problem. They can't see what a great girl you are. You'll find someone. It just takes some time"

Well, that certainly wasn't the reply Arianna had expected. She had to be careful to not succumb to the urge to eye the boy in anyway that might cause him to think she didn't believe him. Of course, she didn't. Not fully, anyway. But it was nice to hear all the same.
"But I think it's turning into a problem with me," she commented, not hiding the frown that passed over her lips. "There's a great guy back home, but I completely freaked out when he asked me out and I doubt it will be the last time."

"Che..." Drew said and he fought hard to keep all traces of disdain out of his voice. No, Drew didn't care for the guy, but now that he was thinking about it, he wasn't sure why. Maybe Ari was right. Maybe he did just hate all of the guys she liked.

"Yeah," Arianna automatically peered up at Drew, perhaps searching for a reaction, though she couldn't really tell what he was thinking. "I mean....it...There's other stuff that...that would be a..a...problem, but...I dunno..."
The girl let out another sigh. Maybe she really was messed up.

"Other stuff? Like what?" Drew asked. She was right. Che was a pretty decent guy (and again, Drew wondered exactly why he didn't like the guy) so the only problem Drew could come up with was if Ari didn't return his feelings.
"Do you like him?" he finally asked, not sure if he really wanted to hear an honest answer.

"Yeah...kinda...." she replied after a long pause, adding a small shrug. Arianna wasn't quite sure how to explain without perhaps bringing up images of the past. Of course, this wasn't quite the same... "A little..."

"Then what's the problem?" Drew asked before asking himself exactly what he thought he was doing. Was he really trying to convince Ari to go out with Che? Maybe he was coming down with something.

"We're....thousands of miles apart," Arianna replied, stating what she thought should be obvious, though realizing that might not be enough of an excuse for the boy. "And....courtship is...is....different in Qui-lin. Everything's kinda.....old fashioned in that respect. It's not dating....like here. It's.....courtship. A guy courts a girl because he want to...."
The next few words came out as a mumble, quiet enough Drew would have to strain to hear what she had said. Arianna's next thought were how on earth they had gotten on the subject in the first place and what could she find to get off of it.

"And he doesn't want to?" Drew asked, finding that hard to believe on so many levels. First being, of course, it was Arianna. Besides the guy who saw her as another sister, who wouldn't want to date her? Second, of course, was Che. The guy sure seemed interested from what he had seen.

"No," Arianna replied, biting her lip as she shook her head. "Well, I mean...HE does, but I....I just don't know....I don't want to think of any of that right now. I don't want to go into a relationship expecting certain things to happen only to be disappointed again."

"Wait... You like him. He likes you, what's the big deal?" Drew said. "You're making it sound like once it starts, that's it. He comes over, brings you flowers, sits in the parlor with you and your parents. So what?"

"So..." Arianna shook her head. Her shoulders lifted up to her ears and slowly back down. She could feel tears threatening. Numerous thoughts gathered in the back of her head, telling her she was being stupid and silly about the whole thing. "I don't....I don't know."
