At the start of the lesson, Beni snapped back from her showy display of "studiousness" and pulled out her writing utensils. As the questions and answers were being fired, Beni had written it all down in shorthand. This is easy, I remember! She thought to herself as she listened and wrote Penelope's answer. But her attention span ran short as she really did not hear Reina's question. Someone called Nessie was entering the topic.

"Miss Diablo, perhaps you're thinking of harpies or imps?" the professor suggested. "Kelpies are rather large beasts, commonly found in the lakes and inland waterways of Scotland. And yes, Nessie is probably the most well known. Darn creature refuses to follow directions and stay hidden. It appeares she likes freaking the Muggles out anytime she can."

"They're kind of on the dark side, aren't they?" Allegra asked, though the stories she had heard about Nessie were more humorous than evil. Nessie seemed more interested in tricking people instead of drowning them.

"Wait, wait, wait," Ivy raised her hand. "I remember reading a book written by Gilderoy Lockhart," at that she sighed in admiration. How she loved and adored the talented, handsome, humble Gilderoy Lockhart. Next to Paris Hilton, Gildy was her idol. "He said something about kelpies living in wells. Actually, one time he saved an entire wizarding village from thirst singlehandedly. He removed over twenty kelpies that were inhabiting the local wells-- which was the only watersource of the town." she nodded impressively. Who knew? Ivy could read.

Becca pursed her lips together and rubbed her temples as if suddenly hit with a headache. "Miss Xin, if you ever mention Mr. Lockhart's name in this classroom as a serious reference again, I'm deadly serious when I say I'll take points."
How she had ever managed to pass her NEWT in Defence after having that man, she didn't know. Granted, he had been fun to look at, but the man's head was full of air.
"Yes, Allegra, they do tend to be on the dark side," Becca said, getting back on track. "But recent studies have come out, showing that they just aren't very smart. They are water creatures and automatically assume everyone else is. They take you down to the depths to play and when you drown, there really isn't much else to do, but eat you." She said this casually as if it really wasn't anything to be concerned about.

Ivy nodded and wrote down notes to herself. She stuck her tongue out as a result of intense thinking, and scratched down some words with her quill.
Ivy raised her hand to ask a question. "Professor, let's say that a kelpie and a mermaid went to a pub and got into a fight. Who'd you reckon would win? The mermaid or the kelpie?"

"Neither. They'd both die from asphixiation before either could throw a punch," Allegra offered with a wry little smile. Of course, if it were an underwater pub, that would be different.
Which actually brought up a questions she decided to ask the Professor after class: Do merfolks have pubs?

"I'll discuss it with the merpeople next time I speak to them," Becca answered, rolling her eyes. Of course, she only spoke a smattering of Mermish so that probably wouldn't be for a while.
"Now, Kelpies will most often take the form of a horse," she continued, hoping to get the class back on track. "If you happen to come across one, the best way to deal with it is to conjure a bridle and place it over its head. This action shows it that you will take the lead in the game and it becomes very docile. Any other form and it is best for you to keep your distance. This does include the Squid in the lake. While studies are still being done, some Magizoologists therorize that it may be our own Kelpie."
{^my personal theory ;D }

Ivy raised her hand yet again. "I've always wondered, Professor... where did the squid come from anyway? For as long as I remember, it's always been there." she asked sincerely. So kelpies are shape-changers... she thought. Could that mean that kelpies are among us...?
She looked at Allegra and narrowed her eyes suspiciously. Explains a lot about the Thorton family... she thought ridiculously as she scribbled down her notes.
(don't mind her, Allegra. lol I mean nothing bad by that. but I do love teasing the Thortons ahah)

Kellen thought about the Professor's theory for a minute. It would make sense--after all, squids were salt water animals, weren't they? The Lake wasn't salt water. Of course, magical creatures could have the exception, but...didn't salt water fish basically explode when they were in fresh water? The squid may have been giant, but it wasn't exploded.

(do fish actually explode? ) Ivy almost seemed obsessed with the idea that Allegra was a kelpie. Allegra even SOUNDS like kelpie. Oh, ho! You cannot decieve me... she continued to eye Allegra, with a twinkle in her eye. To someone else, it might have appeared that Ivy was checking the Head Girl out, but Ivy felt like the question of life had been answered. Yes, Allegra...I know your secret.(^^^^ so that this isn't a pure OOC post)

((ooc: according to real legend they do take the shape of a horse! *ish a Kelpie freak* And sorry for not posting earlier Ms. Davenport, my internet was down)) Daniel scribbed down what he heard, not really paying attention however. What caught his eye was a dark moth passing the window, much more interesting then some creature in the sea. He wasn't interested in horses at all (he hated them just to be different and difficult); much less one that lived in the sea and changed shape. Chewing on the end of his quill, the Seventh year diverted his complete attention out the window, wishing he could be out there rather then in a stuffy classroom talking about horses. Horses. The Seventh year even decided to give a slight cringe in the meer thought.

{yeah, but according to JKR, Nessie is a kelpie too. I've just wondered if the squid could be one as well by her rules}
"Excellent question, Miss Xin!" Becca cheered as if the one query had forgiven any previous mention of Lockhart. "And it sounds like a perfect independent research question!" That basically meant Becca didn't know. The squid had been around since before she had been a student and no one was quite sure how the creature had gotten into the Hogwarts Lake.
