First class after the break was always the most difficult one. The professor would have completely forgotten what he had talked about if he didn't review his notes before class. If he's right, his class probably would need a good recap session too.
But he had something else planned for this lesson. So he would have to decide later on. He copied the symbols covered during the last class on the board while waiting for his 4th years.

Jack walked into his Ancient Runes class. He was the first one to arrive yet again, but this really wasn't a surprise considering there weren't very many students in the class to begin with so chances were pretty good that he would be the first to arrive. He took a seat near the front and got out the supplies that he would need for the class. Waiting for class to start he read over his notes quickly so that he would be caught up after such along break.

Ash stepped into the Ancient Runes classroom and set her thirty pound bag on the floor. She had been carrying that thing around the whole entire day and was it was seriously weighing down on her. She rubbed her aching shoulder and sat down next to Jack. This class was by far the smallest one she was in although she didn't understand why. In her opinion, Professor Mason was the best. Perhaps even better than Bloxam ^^; Of course she would never say that to him... or anyone in particular but it was true.
"How was your break Professor?" she asked with a slight grin. She hadn't seen much of him over the Winter although then again she hadn't seen much of him even when school was in session (besides in class).

Professor Mason heard the students coming, and briefly wondered who brought a 20-lb weight into the room, which he thought was the cause of that big thud. Also, if he's correct, he might have less students than he did before break. But he didn't turn around and continued his writing, until he heard the question.
"Nice and quiet," he turned around in mid-writing and answered. "I was with my Grandpa and we both prefer something not too fancy," he wiped his hands on his robe, leaving white hand-prints on it.
"How was your break Miss Xin? Mr Roarbitz?" he asked them.

She smiled, " Ah- nothing too much. You see, I stayed in the castle for break this year so there wasn't much going on around here." she said and it was just then had she remembered to take her things from her bag out. Ash quickly unloaded her things onto the desk.

"Mine was great." Jack said smiling and remembering back to how he had spent the holidays, "Just went to a friends house and hung out." He wasn't about to admit to the other part of his vacation. The part about sneaking off to Germany so that Verina could see her twin brother, without either of their parents knowing.

"The castle really gets quite quiet around holidays," he remarked absently and allowed himself to zone out for a second. His thoughts drifted to some other matters which had nothing to do with the school or even runes. Okay, maybe a bit about runes. Almost every thought in his mind had something to do with runes.
"So back to Mayan Runes," he began and flipped through his notes, which were basically a pile of loose parchment. "Actually, you know, we are moving ahead of our schedule, that we are going to talk about Logograms today. And next class, we may have a free period. That or we can do some other runes of your choice."

Jack having already read through his notes once waited to see what they would do next. He had actually enjoyed the last class period and thought that this one was bound to be just as fun. After all Logograms sounded cool enough in his mind.
Free period, Jack didn't really know what he would do in a free period after all he normally did all of his studying before he came to class so he probably wouldn't have anything to work on. But the idea of doing a class on the rune of their choice sounded way better then a free period so Jack piped up and said rather excitedly, "I think we should do a class on the rune of our choice. I don't know which one I would choose but I bet I could come up with one by then."

Ash shook her head, lightly, " No, you already went through all the trouble to get the lesson together- I don't want your effort to go to waste." She gave a small smile. She knew how it felt to work hard and have it be for nothing. The Raven didn't know about Mason, but if she had planned out a lesson she would want to teach it, " besides, I'm sure Logograms are interesting."
She didn't want to disagree with Jack or anything- heck she usually did agree with him, though having Professor Mason throw away a whole lesson plan just didn't seem fair.

"It's quite okay, really. It's nice to show you different kinds of runes, then perhaps you will truly see why it's so fascinating," Professor Mason replied with a shrug. He enjoyed runes a lot, as much as he enjoyed sharing it with people who were interested. It took a long time to become particularly good with any one kind. So, the least he could do was do show them more, and hopefully they could see the fun in runes.
"But that we can decide later," he continued, not wishing to dwell on the topic for too long. "We've covered numerals & some basic Syllabograms. Today, we are going to talk about Logograms. So tell me, how many months are there in one year?"

Jack thought that this question was rather an easy one, which also made him wonder if it was a trick question. There was of course twelve months in a year, but what if it wasn't the same in the Mayan culture or in the Runes world then his guess was as good as any other. Raising his hand he said, with a bit of a perplexed look on his face, "There are twelve months in a year."

Months in a year- it was obvious to her but... Jack always seemed to be faster at everything. Was it fair? No. She was just naturally- slow. Ash sighed. She had hardly earned any points for Ravenclaw this year but she hadn't been too competitive either. She knew most of the facts and questions but they didn't come to her quickly. More studying! Yes! You can do it! Four hours on Runes tonight! She held a determined expression as she vigorously jotted down a reminder to study for Runes, in her planner.

"Correct, 12 months for our calendar year, 3 points," Professor Mason nodded along with a grin on his face. Of course that was a trick question. But it was a good point to start the lesson.
"However, there are 18 months for the Mayans. The solar calendar, Haab, has 18 months, each of 20 days," he said. He then turned around and drew the frame work of a table. He would fill them out as he went through the class. But for now, he's waiting for his class to respond.
(Hint: Work out the math ;D)

Jack listened as the professor told them about a different calendar from the one that they used. He found it cool that the different people used different calendars from their own and that they had different amounts of months and days. Quickly doing the math he noticed that there seemed to be only 360 days in the Haab calendar and he knew there was 365 days in their calendar so he was a bit curious where the five days went. Raising his hand he said, “Ah...Professor what happened to the other five days or does their year just restart after 360 and not 365?”

"5 points for paying attention," Professor Mason said. "Mr Roarbitz is absolutely right. 18 months of 20 days only gives us 360 days. The last of the 5 days in Haab is called Wayeb, the unlucky days."
He sketched the Wayeb symbol on the board, and resumed talking. "Of course, these 5 days were not named the unlucky days because they were unlucky. Most people who studied Mayan runes believed it is mostly likely related to religious reason."
He put the chalk down and wiped his hand on his robe, leaving white marks on it. "That's it for today. Please review on your material, and feel free to ask any questions."
