"Yeah? Really?" Drew answered, not bothering to hide his enthusiasm. He'd been trying to sit in Ari's classes since first year.
That was when he realized a combined class could go either way. "Or..." His face fell just at the thought of it and he scrunched his nose in distaste. "Are you talking about combining with the fourth years?" That would suck.

The change of feelings on the boy's face was dramatic. It was like he was having this delicious chocolate this second but it suddenly turned into some slimy bitter substance right there in his mouth.
"I am thinking about combining all years, and perhaps we can talk about a language that is not on either the OWLs or the NEWTs," he said casually, yet his eyes were watching the boy carefully. "But what's wrong with the fourth years? They all seem fairly all right to me."

Sure, there were a few fourth years he'd rather not spend an hour with, but it was true, on the whole, the fourth years were okay.
"But, I already did my fourth year," Drew answered, his lip still slightly curled in distaste over going back. He wanted to move forward, not go over information that he had already done. Or was it that Mason didn't think he could handle the higher courses? Wasn't he good enough? And what exactly would Ari say on the matter? Last time he had gotten into one of the upper classes, she hadn't been too thrilled.
And then there was the kicker...
"Stuff that's not on the OWL? Right before I take it?" Sure, doing new material would be cool, but the OWL was pretty important. Would he be wasting a perfectly good class period on... fun?
Dang, he was sounding more like his sister every day...

"Ah, but learning isn't just about the exams," the professor said. He remembered himself asking the same question once, and was quite annoyed when given that as an answer. But now that he knew it's true, learning shouldn't just be about the exams.
"You have a lot of time to study for your OWLs, and I honestly believe an hour of fun is not going to hurt your performance," he said kindly. "However, if you are really worried, then I suppose I can always prepare a quiz of some sort for you..."

"Okay..." Drew answered carefully, not sure if it was a trick or not. He'd gladly take anything that could give him an edge here. He really wanted to do well on this particular OWL and he wasn't exactly sure why. The bare truth was he had practically been forced to take the class once his parents found out he had signed up for Muggle Studies against their wishes. While he would probably be able to use the knowledge of Runes as an Auror, it wasn't one of the classes required to get into the Academy so he really didn't need it. Maybe because it was the one class that Allegra had never taken. It was all his and he wanted to prove himself.
"I'm all for learning stuff just to learn it, but..." He gave a long sigh, not sure he wanted to go into it. "Right before the test?" It just didn't sound like a good idea to him.

"You still have time between the last lesson and your OWLs. There's going to be lots of time for you to study after that," he walked over to the boy and patted his shoulder. "So I say enjoy the last lesson while you can."
