Arianna still had not opened the gift from Che. She had packed it in her pocket everywhere she went, yet could not bring herself to open it. In fact, she was now contemplating whether she should send it back, unopened. The only thing keeping her from doing so was the look of disappointment she imagined on Che's face when he saw that Arianna didn't want the gift. No, that wasn't right. It wasn't that she didn't want it. She was afraid of it.
Shaking her head, Arianna eased herself onto the dirty window sill, turning the small package over in her hands. She had done this so often in the past few days that the paper was no longer pretty. It was wrinkled and the sweat of her hands had caused the delicate dye to run in some places, creating a blotchy mess.
Sighing, the girl reached her free hand out to pet Parsnip, who had flew to her side just moments before, eager to carry a letter off. When Arianna didn't give her anything, she gotten a little snippy, but quickly sobered when she saw Arianna's mood.
"I'm sorry, Snip," the girl murmured. "I just don't know what to do."

Drew took the steps two at a time, whistling to himself as he entered the owlery. "Hey, he called over to Arianna, giving her a cheerful nod and a smile before whistling at Bogey to come down. The small owl obediently flew to the boy, perching on his head and pecking at his hair as Drew finished up a letter to his parents.

Well, that was different. Arianna couldn't remember the last time Drew had actually offered a smile in her direction. Today probably wasn't the first time, but Arianna couldn't tell you that. As far as she knew, the most interaction she had gotten from the boy consisted of a lot of snapping and feeling quite distant from someone who claimed to be her best friend.
"Hey," the girl offered back in soft quiet voice, barely glancing up at Drew. She leaned back against what would have been the window frame if the owlery had had any windows.

"What are you up to?" he asked, making a grab at the bird on his head. Bogey fluttered madly, trying to escape his clutch, but Drew held on, suffering a few pecks in the process.

"Nothing," the girl replied with a small shrug. She heard the commotion, but didn't turn to see what was going on. Maybe she was too familiar with Bogey's personality. Or maybe she just didn't care anymore.
As Arianna let out a small sigh, the little package in her hand slipped to the floor, but she didn't notice until she tried tucking it in her pocket. By then Snip and grabbed it then, catching sight of Bogey, flew over to snap at the little bugger. Sure he was grown up, but that didn't keep Snip from being his mommy.

"Okay," Drew answered, more concerned with the fact that he was now struggling with two birds instead of one. "I got it, Snip. Go back to Ari," he told the older bird sucking on his finger where one of them had gotten him good.

Hearing her name, Arianna looked up from her search for the package and shook her head at the birds. They could be a pain sometimes.
"Snip. Leave him alone," the girl hurried over and reached for the bird, getting her own fingers bitten. When Snip realized what she had done, the bird calmed down and settled onto Arianna's shoulder, playfully nipping at her ear. Arianna didn't bother trying to help Drew with Bogey, though. Drew could handle him well enough.

Drew finally manged to wrap his hand around the small owl and brought it down to his face at eye level. "Cut it out already!" Drew growled at the bird. "You have a job to do, so you better do it, okay?" When Bogey gave him an obedient little nip as an answer, Drew tied his letter to the owls leg and tossed him out the window. "Hurry back! Be good!" he shouted after it.

Arianna couldn't help it. Despite her mood, a little snort escaped at the thought of Bogey being good. It was always funny to see the interaction between Drew and Bogey. Arianna was sometimes reminded of herself and Snip way back when she had first gotten the little owl.
"Are you sending him out on overseas trips yet?" Arianna found herself asking now.

"No... he's dropping it off at Aunt Abigail's house," Drew answered, still watching his owl fly off towards the southern horizon. "I don't know if he'll ever be big enough for overseas," he finsihed, glad Bogey hadn't heard him say that.

"Oh," Arianna felt a little bad for Bogey. Not being trusted to do big jobs because of his size. How in the world could anyone know if he could do something like that if they didn't let him try? Of course, it didn't surprise Arianna to hear Drew say such a thing. Sometimes she felt as though he thought the same about her.

Drew turned back and gave her a funny look, wondering what she meant by her tone. "What? You'd send him to the States?" What if he got tired half-way? Drew didn't think he could live with himself if that happened. He was careful about any owl he sent across the ocean.

"Yeah," Arianna replied with a small shrug, the look on her face suggesting that it was the obvious answer. "I've been sending Snip overseas since she was about Bogey's age. She's faster than any owl I've ever used, actually."

Drew shrugged back. "I'm not. Speed has nothing to do with it. I'm worried about stamina. A smaller bird just doesn't have the muscle power a larger bird would have," he said. "Our owl Barney is like ten times bigger than Bogey and my parents still won't send him overseas."

"Okay," Arianna shrugged again. It didn't sound like a good excuse to her, but she didn't want to argue the point. If she did, Arianna was afraid she would end up feeling stupid and naive for not doing and thinking the way Drew did.
Feeling another little peck at her cheek, Arianna turned to see what Snip wanted. The bird was still holding the little blue package and offered it back to Arianna, who took it and quickly tucked it back in her in pocket. It might have looked as though she was trying to hide it.
