Claire watched in amazement as Derrick back flipped out to the ledge. Not that she couldn’t do that too but for her it was better to do it in the grass. Jumping off the floor the girl gazed after the boy. Then he asked whether or not she would like to accompany him toward the lake. It sounded like a nice idea but perhaps the chances of getting caught by a prefect or someone would be a little high. Of course that was no reason to stop the little third year. Besides, this would be a good opportunity to get to know Derrick a little more. He seemed to be an interesting kid.
“Sure, I’d like to come.” Claire smiled. She was about to attempt to follow him but another thought occurred. “Er, this is just a guess but you do want your guitar back right? I don’t want to do anything stupid.” The thirteen year old blushed. Not that Claire was a uncoordinated but she would rather not risk it.

She seemed hesitant at his offer but accepted none the less. He hadn't pressured her at all had he? Derrick didn't want to risk getting the girl in trouble, he knew that most people at Hogwarts wouldn't mind a detention or two but how did he know that she wouldn't mind one? For that matter Derrick didn't want her to remember him as the kid that forced her to get into trouble the first time she meet him. Derrick shook it all off though she had agreed hadn't she meaning she wanted to go. At least he hoped that this was the case and with that last thought he sealed the deal on the matter. Stretching he reached up as if attempting to touch the sky and quickly tidying his appearance or at least attempting to when he finished. Smiling sheepishly once more Derrick scratched the back of his head and motioned towards Niwa to follow him to the door.
Just as his hand touched the doorknob though she spoke to him about Francesca. He turned and looked at his beloved instrument but his eyes caught the sight of her cheeks. She was blushing but why? She hadn't addressed his skin pigment earlier and decided to do her the same favor of not bring up her own. What to do though, he was sure he could trust her but knew that if she wasn't confident in her abilities he shouldn't let her hold it. He didn't understand why she should be though after all there was no way that she could be as clumsy as he was sometimes. Granted that was when he was nervous though and usually only when he was nervous. Looking at her Derrick slowly raised his head gazing into Claire's eyes.
"I trust that you won't let anything happen to her. Don't worry too much about being caught I'll have Niwa check the corners."
Slipping the door open Derrick started heading down the stairs taking one at a time. He hoped that she was following him after all Claire had his guitar. Looking at his cat Derrick made a quick hand gesture and watched as his cat scampered out ahead to check the halls for any sign of teachers, heads, and prefects. While Derrick didn't mind detention if possible he wouldn't like to get his first one this year. It would dock time in the library and also he had to teach Claire how to play guitar. The last bit was though he realized was a moot point because if he got detention at this point then so would she. Shaking it all off he strolled down out of the stairway into the hall waiting for the cat to return and show him the best rout. Derrick really just preferred to take the easiest way out to the lake

Claire did not understand why her face decided to change color but it did and thankfully Derrick didn't notice either, that would have been really embarassing. Then again he could just be pretending not to notice but as long as it was never mentioned it was fine. Shaking what had happened from her head Claire strolled toward the boy holding his guitar watching the cat head out the door. It was a good idea to check the corners but knowing some of the prefects it was always a good idea to carry a few things with you in case one is on the verge of being caught. The Slytherin had a few non explodeable balloons always when wandering around at night. Heavens knew that after the first few detentions Claire really didn't want to do lines all over again with, 'I will not wander around the castle after hours'. Then again threatening the girl with detention really didn't bother her as much anymore. Now if they threatened to make her sit on the bench for a Quidditch match that would be another story.
"So which way are we taking to the lake?" Claire asked curiously coming up behind Derrick. The front door didn't sound like a good idea if there were going to be a lot of people wandering around though they could end up lucky. It might be a really good idea to cut through a few tapestries and go down through the more deserted corridors rather than just going straight down the grand staircase. But right now Claire just kept her mouth shut and waited for her new found friend to answer.

Derrick wasn't one to sneak so to speak. He was too direct, blunt, and obvious about such things as walking down the hall. When he walked he walked and there really wasn't too much more to it. That was how he usually was anyway but Derrick couldn't help but be a bit concerned at this moment simply because he had Claire with him. This is how you feel when he you had friends he supposed. Straighting himself he saw Niwa approach and scooped up his cat swiftly. His cat meowed gently and pointed his paw towards which corridors were open and which were being patrolled. Derrick wasn't used to sneaking around and while he didn't like to assume thing Claire seemed as if she knew where to go. Turning he gave her a trusting look.
"I usually take the scenic route myself but if you know a way you're comfortable with lead on. Niwa has pretty much let me know it's all clear"
This could be his downfall, Derrick knew this, but he was a trusting person and anyone who told him anything he usually believed it. Because really why did people have a reason to lie to him what had Derrick ever done to anyone? Petting Niwa now though he thought of how brilliant his cat really was. He didn't know if it was because he spent so much time with him or if his cat was just unusually brilliant. Derrick wouldn't know either way about the intelligence of other cats because Niwa was the only one he had any type of prolonged interaction with. Shaking his head he realized he was hopeless when it came to everything in general. Turning though he waited expectantly for Claire to lead the way.

Claire was still thinking about the way she knew and thought it best. However she never had a cat around to check corners, that sounded really helpful. So considering that to be the case and the fact Derrick seemed confident in his pet's abilities there didn't seem to be a reason not to go with his scenic route. "If there isn't anyone around, I don't see anything wrong with taking your way." Claire shrugged, it still felt a little strange to her how trusting Derrick was but that wasn't really a bad thing.
Claire stood back just slightly waiting for Derrick to take the lead. She didn't mind so much especially since he seemed to know what he was doing when it came to late night journeys across the castle. Giving a slight bow Claire pointed toward the door with a smile, "Lead on captain." Hopefully he could tell she was just playing around.

Derrick did as his smaller companion told him and lead on. Walking steadily down hallway Derrick acted as he normally did without a care in the world and what people though of his actions. Running his hand steadily across the bricks he closed his eyes and smiled feeling each one on his fingerprints for whatever reason relaxed him. Knowing that he was here had that effect on him and Derrick sternly hoped every year that he would never have to leave. It was as if this building and school was his new home. The home that he had lost when his parents passed. His new step parents were loving but he didn't feel the same level of comfort or for that matter safety with them in the house he resided in. Of course he was really safe but it was more of a metaphorical safety that Derrick was speaking of. Sighing he let a small smile cross his face as he turned and faced his companion for a moment.
"So if I'm the captain...does that make you my skipper or whatever you would care to be?"
Derrick didn't wait for her to answer before he turned around. He knew the dangers of walking back wards for too long of a time were dangerous and weren't ones that he cared to risk encountering. They were making good time on their way to the lake and Derrick couldn't wait to get there. He hoped they wouldn't make too much noise when outside because it was an open area and one that frankly was easy to be spotted in. Which is the reason that at that moment Derrick suppressed the urge to go for a swim as soon as he reached the shore of the lake. Turning a corner though he watched as Niwa walked confidently ahead checking around corners and making sure the coast was clear. Derrick glanced at the portraits, most of which were asleep at this hour, taking in their faces and smiling to himself. Up until now they were the most interaction and conversation that he had, had at the castle. Reaching the door that lead down the steps he couldn't help but smile at the fact that he was about to feel the grass underneath him and see the sky above him again. Sure he had been out on the grounds earlier that day but it had already been too long in his opinion.
Opening the door he took a step out and smiled as he gazed up at the night sky. It's bright stars beaming down at him again just as they had when Derrick was up in the tower. It was only a few moments ago but it felt as if it had been a lifetime. The Hogwarts lawn, which he had named Bemis in his first year here, awaited him in all its glory but at the moment Derrick couldn't help but feel a bit competitive at the moment. Turning he lifted Francesca from Claire, swung the instrument over his back in one swift movement and smiled shyly.
"Race you to the shore."
It wasn't an offer and meant something along the lines of I'm running whether you are or not. With this in mind he paused briefly after he said this but didn't wait for Claire's response before Derrick took off running towards the lake. After all Derrick had given her the advantage he had to make sure Francesca made it to the shore in one piece.
