Ken would like to remind her that maybe the murderer was only using the title of Hogwarts professor as a disguise, that it was his or her true intention all along to cause havoc. But he also understood they were emotionally involved with the people here, so he should leave that opinion to himself.
"How's Miss Estaci? Is she here this term?" he asked. He read an article about her being arrested of "assumptions". To accuse the staff was bad, but to arrest a student was even worse.

Lainee snapped too. She was suddenly suspicious of this man and wondering why he was questioning them so. Maybe he was actually working for the Mom.
"Yes, she's here and though that girl is ... feisty I don't think she would have killed someone. She is sweet and innocent inside though she does try to act tough. Now that one girl in..." Lainee trailed off. No, she wouldn't think any of her students could do that, though she was now careful around a few.

"No... not Miss Estaci..." Becca trailed off, sipping at her tea. She had seen most of the students in her class and felt quite sure on who would or would not be capable of harming another living being. Yes, there were a few she kept her eye on around her creatures, but Jade was not one of them she owrried about.

"So those rumors are really rumors, including the bit regarding the Mastermind of this really is a Leprechaun, going by the name Sir Dal Green?" he shook his head. This conversation sure was going nowhere.
"Anyways," he sat down on a chair and stretched. "Becca, is it true that there's a resident dragon here on Hogwart's grounds?"

"Right now, that's all we have are rumours," Becca answered with a sigh, but she smiled gratefully at the change of topic. "Another rumour. As I understand it, Durmstrang has a dragon on school grounds, but last time we had one here was... 1994? For the Triwizard Tournement." She shook her head sadly. That had been another rather dark time. "That was the fall right after I left school."

Another bad topic, Ken frowned. From his past experience, whenever a conversation had taken a bad turn, it always did wonder if someone made a good joke. And what's a better joke than a joke on himself?
"You know, I find it really amusing how you manage to tend to so many animals," he said. "I am terrible at that. My niece gave me a cactus once, and somehow, I managed to kill it."

Becca's mind was drifting, thinking of her last years at school. They had had a fantastic quidditch team that year and might have even won the cup if Cho had actually done her job instead of flirting with all of the other seekers. Yes, as girls tend to do, they had come up with a not very nice nickname for the floozy.
Her mind snapped back to the present at the mention of a cactus. "Oh, plants? That's Professor Shaw's area of expertise."

Ellie walked in quietly and smiled at everyone shyly. "Er-- hello everyone," she nodded. "Did I hear something about a cactus dying?" She conjured herself up a chair and sat down next to Becca. "How exactly did you manage to do that? They're supposed to withstand even the harshest of situations," she said quietly to Ken.
In actuality, she had overheard them talking about a "Ms. Estaci". Many people in the Ministry were working on the case, and she was very interested in the topic. She had yet to ask anyone about it, but she decided that she would wait until a better time. For now, she would settle on the convienient topic of cactii.

If Professor Shaw was totally in love with the subject of Herbology, then more reason for Ken to not to tell him about the cactus. No reason to let someone harbor any kind of resentment towards the plant-killer.
"I am not exactly sure myself," he scratched his head in a slightly embarrassed fashion. He didn't remember seeing her at the feast. "I can never tell if I am watering it too much or too little. I did as I was told, sunlight and water once a month. But it still didn't survive."
He shrugged at the new comer, before introducing himself. "Kenneth Mason, teaching Ancient Runes here. Are you new as well?"

She bowed her head slightly, as her parents had told her to do when meeting new people. "Pleased to meet you, Mariella Solis, Astronomy. I'm also the Groundskeeper. You can call me Ellie, though." she smiled sweetly at him. "Yes, I am new." she nodded.
Ellie rubbed the back of her neck. "How was the trip here for all of you? I flew here... but I pained my neck by looking down all the time. I had terrible, terrible directions. Especially since this place is unplottable..." she muttered.

Ken looked at the Mariella. He couldn't believe anyone would really fly all the way...wait, where did she fly from? He was terrible at flying, couldn't even hover without falling down.
"I floo-ed here," he replied. "Where did you fly from?"

"Ah, that would be the practical thing to do," she said. Of course, she really hated Floo... she never got the hang of it. "I was staying with a friend that lives in a village near Hogsmeade, so I decided to just fly from there instead."
"There's a Ball coming up, right? Are any of you planning to participate?" she looked around eagerly, Ellie was still very much a kid and she loved Halloween. She wasn't quite sure what she would dress up as yet, though.

"Well, Ravenclaw is favored to win the cup again, but Hufflepuff is making quite a nice showing this year..." Becca sighed plesantly into her cup, her mind still on her school days. She had totally missed the meaning of the astronomy professor's use of the word 'ball'.

Ken was glad that he didn't get himself a cup of tea too. Because he could almost see himself choking on the tea if he were sipping it. He thought Mariella was talking about the Halloween ball that he had heard so much about too. Why Rebecca brought up the Cup was totally unknown to him.
"I think we need to be there at the Halloween ball anyways?" he said tentatively, but his expression told the ladies that he's really quite amused. "But yes, I heard students murmuring about how Hufflepuff had a whole new set of strategies to win both Cups this year."

Ellie blinked at Rebecca and wasn't sure what to say. She settled with a "Er...". However, Kenneth saved her from complete awkwardness when he answered her question. She felt totally out of place with these teachers-- she was... an imposter. I'm a ministry worker... I was. I'm now a Professor! I can do this!
"I meant-- go in costume?" Ellie said, feeling that Kenneth had misunderstood her. "Really? Those Hufflepuffs are surprisingly strong," she said, nodding. "I must admit, I was underestimating them,"
