Just the thought of some of thsoe diseases made Allegra want to squirm and she supressed an unseasonable shudder. It was the most she would do cpnsiodering she had asked to see the photos and now didn't want to be disrespectful to the people with the illnesses.
She enjoyed hearing Kellen talk about his work. He sounded so passionate about it and only wished she could find an occupation that she could really enjoy. "I imagine that would be hard, not being able to see the signs," she commented. "So what do you do?"

"Well, ususally there's something," Kellen started. "Like, patients will always tell you where it hurts, or whatever. Unless they're unconscious. Then it gets to be really challenging," he added with a small smirk. "Or they're lying. It's amazing how often patients will lie about things--sometimes they cover up something that turns out to be really important.
"But hey, what about you? What've you been up to? Heard there was some....er...excitement here at Hogwarts not too long ago."

"I never got that," Allegra said, scrunching her nose. She had forogtten how nice it was to talk to Kellen. It always felt so easy, ike she didn't have to worry about what she said or how she appeared. "I mean, if you're seeing a doctor or a healer, why would you lie? How can they help you unless they have all the facts, right?"
And then he changed the subject. Allegra was pretty sure he was talking about the Deva take-over. Excitement was definitely an understatement. "You heard about that, did you?" she answered with a small smirk. No, it hadn't been the best of times.

"People either don't think it's important, are embarrassed by it, or somehow think we care all about their personal lives and will broadcast anything we find out all over the place, I guess," Kellen answered, realizing he'd accidently set that trap that happens when two people who are writing a thread together start having two different conversations at once, answering each others' questions. He'd have to watch out for that in the future.
"Well, foreign media didn't get quite as into it as I'm sure the local papers did, but yeah, I heard about it," Kellen said, almost ruefully. "I still don't really know a lot of the details, though."

Even though she knew no healer or doctor would actually do that, Allegra didn't voice it, just nodding back in response. She would make sure to add that to her list of reasons why lengthy posts were sometimes so bothersome. It was definitely something that really annoyed her and her post hadn't even been that long.
"Ticloon was working with the Deva," Allegra answered quietly, unnecessarily worried about speaking of the incident. "She worked it so Shaw could hold the student body hostage once we all came back from Winter break. I'm still not sure what they were trying to accomplish other than show the world that they could. At least it got Raynor out of Azkaban and back here where she belongs."

Kellen grimaced a bit at the mention of Shaw's name, but didn't speak to it. He and the Deva's leader had a complicated past, and part of Kellen still couldn't believe everything the man seemed to have done. He'd felt totally betrayed by Shaw, and hadn't really dealt with it.
"Hey, silver lining, right?" he said lightly about Raynor's return. "Even the darkest, weirdest, most screwed-up situations have to have it. Besides, now that it's happened once it's surely not going to happen again--not any time soon, at least."

Allegra smiled a little. Kellen could always find the best in the darkest of situations... and she always foudn it easy to buy into it no matter how minute it seemed. He just had that way.
But thinking that if it happened once, that made them somehow safe? That was harder to convince herself of. "I don't know about that," she answered a little softer. "I mean, who says he won't? And what's soon? It's been a few months, but he could try again in June, right?"

"Well, people will know what to expect if he tries a second time, right?" Kellen answered with a shrug. "Like, defenses will be better. Besides, if he didn't seem to have a purpose the first time besides proving he could, then why would he bother with another try? He'd go after someplace else if he wanted to make another statement." The more he articulated it, though, the more he realized he might not be correct. What was to stop him from trying again? Well, there was always... "Plus, Raynor's back. Hogwarts is safe once again."

"Defenses would be better if we were allowed to have a defense class," Allegra answered, making a small face. She had a feeling that Drew was working on some way to get around that particular problem, but nothing had happened yet.
"But yeah, Raynor is back," she echoed with a small smile, glancing over to where she had last seen the Headmistress. "You know she's going to do what she can to make sure the school stays safe."

"The woman's like a mother bear protecting her cubs," Kellen said with a grin. "She won't let anybody get back into the school, I'm sure. And she'll find a way to get defense back, and if she doesn't, there are definitely some resourceful kids here who'll figure something out." Allegra's brother certainly being first on that list.
"That's all Ministry stuff, right? All politics?"

"Yeah, definitely," Allegra said, agreeing with Kellen's characterization of the Headmistress. She was also pretty confident some sort of Defense class would pop up next term, even if it wasn't an official class.
"Politics..." she echoed, rolling her eyes. "I'm not sure when they'll figure out that the best people to run a school are usually the ones who are already working there. Are there a lot of politics at Mungos?"

"Oh, I have no doubt," Kellen said with a sigh. "I mean, I haven't really started there yet, so I can't say for sure but any place there is a board of directors and / or money involved, there is sure to be politics. Probably not so bad as the school, really, but certainly it's there. Too many cooks, and all that." He sighed again, though quieter this time. People always had something to say, and unfortunately important things were often caught up because of all those things people had to say. "Why defense, though? I didn't really understand why they stopped with it in the first place."

"I don't know," Allegra answered, shrugging in an expression of her frustration and disbelief. "Something about how it was biased. The ministry started having a problem with defining things as "dark" magic." It really didn't make any sense to her at all.
"They said that the curriculum would be absorbed by the other classes, mainly charms and transfiguration, but Drew says it's not really happening. At least not to the extent that Raynor was teaching it." The whole thing was one big mess, she thought, especially with the Deva on the rise.

"Well, it's true enough that defense is something covered in the other classes," Kellen mused. "In fact, defense brings together the other subjects in a better way than any of the other classes, really. It's like application for everything else we learn in school." He'd never really thought of the class like that before, but it really was true--it synthesized knowledge of charms, magizoology, potions, and the others.
"Apparently they just don't like practical application of magic," he said, still finding the whole situation ridiculous.

Allegra gave a small snort, though it wasn't really funny how little the Ministry thought of the class. It was beyond ridiculous. It was down right idiotic and, in Allegra's opinion, down right dangerous.
"That's what they're counting on, though," Allegra pointed out. "Because it ties the others together, they feel it can be covered in all of the other classes. The problem is, that's just backwards thinking. It would be like teaching someone to swim by having one class in holding your breath, one in the proper strokes, another in how to kick, but never actually getting into the waater, you know?"
