Great. This is what he got for messing around in the woods on his broom. It felt like it had been ages since he had flown and he really hadn't thought there would be a problem with the trees. After all, how many times had he swerved through branches or worse, bludgers.
The ride had started out fairly event-less and as the wind whipped through his short hair, he sighed happily at the familiar feel. Leaning lower over his broomstick, he sped up, zipping around trunks and between limbs, remembering his old tricks and executing them with ease.
It had been a trick of his eye, when it was over he was sure of it, that had caused him to stumble. A flash of light against a rock, making a small woodland creature seem to be more than it was, distracted the long and lean rider, causing him to miss a turn and slamming him through a bushy branch. He tangled in the twigs, losing hold of his broom and crashing to the ground, his broomstick still tucked neatly above as if the tree was an old home it had returned to.
The fall wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been for the terrain below him. Landing on a rock, he heard a familiar, sickening crunch as his right elbow made contact and Drew let out a yell no one else could hear.
Damn.
Had it been any of his other limbs, he could have done the healing charm himself, but with his right arm now lame, the best he could do was grab his broom again and get to Mungo's. Maybe his Aunt was on duty and she could patch him up just like old times.
He summoned the broom from the tree (it stubbornly fought to stay in it's new found home), and with a quick twist, Apparated to the lobby of the Hospital.
The mode of transportation had been a mistake. Now his arm was broken... and apparently splinched at the wrist. Great. All he could do now was check in and wait to be seen.
{oooooooopen!}

It was between exhaustion and satisfaction. Layla couldn't quite decide which feeling dominated over the other one. There was a small Dragon Pox epidemic in in Surry and Layla had been asked to come because of a staff shortage. It also helped that she had contracted Dragon Pox while in Hogwarts, and wouldn't be affected by the wave of patients coming in. Layla and a few others that were still in training had been relieved from their regular duties and were assigned to assist the other staff members that were able to attend to them. For the last four days, Layla had seen more of the hospital and had learned more than she had in the first few months. She was glad to be of use and able to interact with patients, and was finally feeling like she had a place at St. Mungos. It would still be a long while she would be a fully fledged Healer, but her coworkers and other Healers were starting to remember her name.
On the other hand, she could barely keep her eyes open and she felt like she had a sack of galleons tied to her ankles. Since the staff shortage, Layla had been pulling almost 20 hours shifts and came in for extra time whenever they owled her to come in. She had been warned against taking potions to keep her awake since some of the experienced Healers told her that it was easy to become to dependent on them, so she was trying her best to be awake, alert and functional without any help.
Tucking a little boy into his hospital bed, she spoke words of encouragement to the parents, and suggested to them that they have themselves examined in case they were affected. She told them that she'd be back in a while and held the yawn until she got to the lift. She used her cool hand to press against her eyes, which felt swollen. She reached the lobby, in search for any stragglers that might have arrived through the floo, but instead found a tall young man that looked strangely familiar. He held a broomstick in one hand, but otherwise looked fine. Walking towards him to see if he needed help finding someone, she couldn't resist the giggle that escaped from her lips. Aside from being tired to the point of delirium, she was glad to see Drew. They spoke and owled whenever they had a chance since they'd walked the halls of Hogwarts for the last time, but it seemed that work and their own lives had sucked up opportunities to keep in touch.
"Hey there!," she said when she was in earshot. She was depleted of energy, but an easy smile appeared on her face.

He was feeling a little green, but kept telling himself it wasn't such a big deal. He had suffered worse and he was far from being a top priority in the waiting room that day. As he looked at some of the other patients, he had to supress a giggle when he caught sight of a very grumpy girl in the corner covered in pink boils. She was sitting between a smaller, sorrowful looking boy and a very angry looking mother. Ah, how that brought back memories. Drew often thought it was a wonder Allegra still spoke to him.
As he continued his people watching, trying his best too keep his mind off of his throbbing arm, he thought he caught sight of a familiar face. He broke out into a wide grin as he realized it was definitely Layla who was coming towards him.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" he asked with a note of surprise as she got closer. He knew she was training to be a Healer, but really hadn't expected to see her.

"Ugh, I practically live here right now," she told him shaking her head. She held out her arms for a hug, but as she turned to face him she saw that his face was pale behind his familiar grin. Her first reaction was to quickly scan his body for anything wrong, and her green eye landed on the arm with out the broom in the hand, situated at an odd angle. "Woah... What happened to you?" she asked, leaning in closer to avoid any contact that would make it hurt. As she took a closer look, she realized that his other hand was missing entirely. Well, no wonder he'd just walked into the middle of the lobby. Ministry officials on business had a tendency to floo into St. Mungos on a different floor. Drew wasn't here on business, but it definitely wasn't pleasure.
"Follow me," she told him. A few months before, she would have been a bit frantic and overbearing, but St. Mungos had hardened her nerves a bit, especially in the last couple of days. She walked towards a doorway off to the left that lead to a row of examination rooms. She opened the door and held it open for Drew with a tiny grin, her head shaking. "So either you have to break something or I have to break the law for us to see each other?"

His first reaction had been to hug his old housemate, but his lame arm prevented him from moving towards an embrace of any sort. As she made her own advance to greet him, he involuntarily tensed as he expected some more pain. She leaned in closer and even though Layla hadn't touched him, he still sucked on his teeth sharply, followed by a small, embarassed laugh at his own stupidity.
"I was flying through the woods and got distarcted," he answered, berating himself for making such a dumb, rookie mistake. He readily followed her when she told him to, but had to shake his own head and laugh at her conclusion for getting together. "Shees, I hope not. How about we come up with a different plan," he told her as he entered the small room. It looked pretty much like every other of the gazillion exam rooms he had been in, and he leaned against the table and waited for her to do whatever.

Layla's own face scrunched up in sympathy as Drew twitched slightly. She imaged the sharp pain that shot up his arm was not pleasant. She chuckled lightly as he laughed at himself; she couldn't think of having any degree of humor when your hand was missing and the rest of the limb wasn't any better off. Her shoulders shook as she held in the laughter that threatened to escape when he explained his incident. "And somehow lopped off your arm in the process? What happened to all those years of Qudditch?"
She left the door open behind her and drew her wand. The simple incantation that emitted a soft orange glow morphed into a small orb that levitated about the door just outside. Soon enough if a Healer ever had a chance to even breathe, they would see it and know that a patient was there to be seen, though it wasn't too serious. Red orbs floated above a dozen other doors that indicated that those patients needed more immediate attention. "Different plan sounds good," she told him smiling. "I don't think I'd have a job for too long if I keep up m end of that arrangement" She reached a hand out, asking for his broom. "Sit," she told him.

"It's only a few missing fingers," he told her, but made a conscious effort not to look at his mangled arm. He wasn't usually squeemish about his own injuries, but the sight of his wrist did make him a little sick. "I missjudged a tree, looked away for a moment and paid the price... then decided that Apparating here was the best option."
"And I'll run out of limbs eventually," he told her, handing over his broom before pulling himself onto the table as he was told. "So, can you fix it, Doc?"

A professional demeanor was difficult to maintain when Drew was sitting in one of the examinations rooms missing an arm. "Apparition..." she said, forcing a cough to keep herself from laughing. She took the broom and placed it in the nearest corner. "I guess flying would have felt horrid, but seriously, Drew." She approached him with a calm expression, finding the broken arm and missing digits a nice relief from the unsightly dragonpox Her wand now directed to his sleeve, which she enchanted to split neatly along the length of his arm. "Hope that isn't your favorite robe, sorry."
She perked an eyebrow when he asked her if she could fix it. "Actually, no," she grumbled. "The most I can do is relieve the pain. Anything else without a Healer around, and I'm sacked." The rotation of her wrist was tight and precise, having been the spell she'd used the most since she'd started her apprenticeship, and a soft glow spiraled around Drew's arm.

Drew shrugged sheepishly back as she chided him, and while he winced when she ripped his sleeve, it really hadn't hurt at all. He shook his head in answer. "It's easy enough to fix later, right?" he told her, knowing Allegra was pretty good at mending spells.
His face fell slightly when she said she wouldn't be able to fix it, that he'd need to see a fully trained Healer. Drew had spent plenty of time in hospitals, getting patched up for one thing or another, but he had never gotten used to them. He wasn't as nervous around people who he knew, but most of the time it was some stranger trying to patch him up. He was feeling okay with Layla taking care of him, but he wasn't very cool with someone else doing it. Could he really be sure they'd know what they were doing?
"What's that you're doing then?" he asked, a million questions popping into his head even when he knew the answer to half of them. It was a nervous habit that he hoped a friend like layla would forgive. Strangers just tended to get annoyed. "What if you fix it and we just tell them it wasn't that bad? Can you at least get my hand back on?"

Layla's bedside manner was something she was working on still. Some patients were nervous or afraid about seeing a Healer. She would usually tell them that it should be fine since she technically wasn't one just yet. They would often laugh a little and relax, giving her a chance to do the most she was allowed. There were some people, however, who were easily panicked and gave Healers and trainees alike a hard time. Drew seemed to be fine, though he was anxious to get his arm back. She smiled at the string of questions he had, trying to make him feel at ease.
She felt bad that she couldn't help him at the moment, it was hard seeing him as a patient at St. Mungos than her friend. If they had been outside these walls, she would have had it fixed in record time."I would definitely do it if I could," she told him, not interrupting the small motions of her wand as she worked to relieve the pain. "I've seen it done dozens of times and performed it enough under supervision, but they're really strict on having anything done without a Healer present." There was usually a mixed response from people when she told them that she wasn't allowed to work alone. Some agreed, and waited for a Healer, though not always patiently, and some grew even more upset by what seemed like silly rules.
The most she could do is distract him for now, keep his mind off the injury. It hopefully wouldn't be too hard since the pain should be draining from his arm. "We actually had a meeting about it a few weeks ago," she told him, already giggling at the main reason for the reinforcement of the policy. "Another trainee worked on someone without a Healer, the patient still speaks a hybrid of English and Goblin."

Drew frowned at her answer, knowing he'd have to wait a while for an actual healer to come in. Then, once they came in, he'd have to figure out if they knew what they were actually doing and then hope they didn't make things worse.
Then again, from what Layla said, it sounded like she would probably fix him up anyway once the Healer got there. He really wished she'd just do it and he jiggled his leg nervously as he waited, smiling slightly at her story. "I'd be okay with speaking Goblin." Seriously, he wouldn't tell if she would just take care of it. It wasn't hurting as much, but he really didn't like being there.

Layla noted his reaction to what she said, and attributed it to a bit of nerves, which was normal. She obviously wasn't doing well distracting him, but she could barely distract herself from the numbness her brain was feeling from being awake close to 24 hours.
"I can't promise that would be the worst that could come of it," she told him walking to the door and popping her head out and looking each way before swinging the door. She didn't close it, but left a few inches open so that anyone who just walked by wouldn't be able to see much other than Drew and his missing hand. "I haven't slept much in the last few days," she explained, sliding the only other seat in the small room for her to sit in. She placed the chair behind the door, blocking it from being opened entirely, or at least giving her the chance to recover and look busy in case someone walked in. She felt instant relief from the soles of her feet when she sat, and a tiny smile accompanied a long sigh. "I'm just going to try to take a quick break here while you wait, if you don't mind." She rubbed her eyes again, trying to shake off the sleep. "They'll find me soon enough, but at least that means you'll get treated quicker." She grinned, finding her plan beneficial to the both of them."

His top priority had been to get himself fixed up and thne out of there as soon as possible, but when Layla took a seat and told him about her work schedule, his concern switched over to her.
"I don't mind," he said, welcoming the company. If he had to wait for a fully trained healer, he'd rather wait with someone he knew and liked. "They're keeping you pretty busy then?" He wasn't too sure how he felt about the healers working long hours and trying to fix him up when they were so exhausted.

Though it was terrible to think, Layla felt like she lucked out on Drew getting injured. She felt guilty appreciating it, but the second she sit down, she realized the pressure on her feet that had been accumulating for the last ten hours. Once she got up, it would feel worse and she would regret it, but for the moment her feet were thanking her.
"It's normally not this bad," she told him. "We had a dragonpox outbreak, so we're using all the people we can for as long as we can." Instead of withholding it, she allowed the yawn to escape her mouth. "No one has had much sleep lately." She watched Drew's face for any sign of pain, just in case, but she expected her charm to last him as long as the wait for a Healer would last. "How are things at the Ministry?"

The pain in his arm had been reduced to a dull and annoying throb, and while he still knew it was there, he was feeling a little more normal... even with a splinched wrist. having her sit and just chat with him was helping with the situation as well.
Drew gave a small laugh at the mention of the outbreak. It wasn't that he thought another's misery was funny, but it did bring back a few memories. "Yeah, remember the couple of outbreaks we had at school? Or were you there for those? That was fun. You'd think they'd find a vaccine for that by now."
"Things are okay at the Ministry," he answered with a shrug, reignighting the pain in his arm and causing him to wince. The charm she had put on him was a pretty good one because it settled down again fairly quickly. "I guess, same as you... except for the sickness part. Long hours, not a whole lot of challenge to the job at this point. I mean for me, it's actually a lot like back at school. I'm doing a lot of studying and just starting in on the field work. Then, I guess the fun really starts."
