Beni had lowered her hot shot sunglasses and wiggled her eyebrows as if to say, "You know you want to play, Reina!" but instead obediently let her suspect go. Temporarily. "We will deal with you after class," She said as she looked at him above lowerd sunglasses.
She dodged glances again and sat down. For a secret agent, she was sweatly rather profusely. Then again, she had her school robes and uniform under the heavy trenchcoat. You know, just so she wouldn't get caught with points off for going completely into character. She would just consider that her school uniform was an impromtu undercover costume.

Shaking her head, the Professor let out a slight sigh. Never let it be said that the seventh year class was not an amusing one. Of all things, she would miss that about them most of all. They never did fail to keep her on her toes. The very tips of them at that.
Once everyone took their seats, Raynor relinquished her stringent guard over the cluster of cloth covered tanks. There was much less of a chance of something happening now that they were all seated. Mind you, the key word was less.
"Very good." A small smirk spread across Raynor's lips. Oh, what a dangerous sign indeed. "Now. Who can tell me what they remember about dark creatures. A few facts, simply a quick summary for the less studious students."
And therefore the ones most likely to fail their N.E.W.T.s examinations, but the Deputy was not as cruel to point that part out. Negativity in a classroom had never been on her list of favorites.

Dark creatures? It was such a broad topic that Ivy didn't know where to begin. She looked around the room and raised her hand, suspecting that Raynor was referring to her when she was talking about less studious.
"Er... well, umm... hmmm..." Ivy started awkwardly. She was slightly afraid of Raynor, especially after the incidents of the last class. She took a deep breath, calmed down and started speaking very, very fast, "There are tons of dark creatures, there is a large variety of them... kind of like doughnuts. There is not one way to deal with every dark creature. Each of them have their own weaknesses. For instance, a lethifold, which is similar to a dementor is like..." she looked at Allegra and Kellen, trying to extract the answer from their brains. "...like, they're totally afraid of light and happiness-- or like, patronuses."
Ivy was really bad at answering questions in Defense Against the Dark Arts, but at least she tried.

Like doughnuts? that was kind of an odd parallel, but if it worked for Ivy, Allegra wasn't going to argue.
"Dark creatures aren't actually animals in the strictest sense, but rather more like a physical representation of dark magic. They exist solely to do harm to others and are inherently evil, unlike spells which is all about the intention of the caster. All the dark creatures have are bad intentions. That's all they can be," Allegra answered. She could probably give more, but figured it would have been a bit much.

Reina raised her hand slowly even as she started to speak. Her voice came out slow, even, and on a soft sigh. Giving everyone a creepy feeling as it was totally unnatural for Reina.
"Manticore. It has a human like head, lion's body, and a scorpion's tail. It is also cable of speech and the only reason it's not considered..."
Reina smiled and it touched her eyes with a dark glint in her eyes.
"...human is because it likes to kill. Not just kill, but eat it's victim. See the tail has a very lethal poison and it's skin is so tough it can repel almost any charm. It's totally..."
Reina stopped and sat down.
"...that's a dark creature, right Prof. Raynor?"

"Actually..." Allegra started slowly, taking her time before continuing. "A manticore isn't considered a dark creature. It's a predator and kills to eat. The fact that it prefers human flesh is an unfortunate coincidence, but doesn't make it a dark creature. It's not inherently evil... just hungry. It would be like saying a lion or a shark is a dark creature."

Like dough-nuts!? That was an interesting analogy. However, the professor did smooth over her expression and actually thought about the answer. Years in the past with a particular student named Jack Montesquieu had given her much practice at trying to analyze an answer such as that. Though his had been more of a spoof and usually had included boats. Ivy's had a more sincere quality to them.
"Actually, very accurate, Miss Xin. There are many of them, they do have their own perks and weaknesses, and dementors and lethifolds are perfect examples and their counter is the Patronus. Lets see, fifteen points to Hufflepuff." She gave a small nod, seeing that as fitting. The girl didn't seem to have much confidence in the subject and as a N.E.W.T.s seventh year, that would have to change.
The Deputy bobbed her head again. "I'm not sure about the point of dark creatures not being animals, Miss Thornton, for they are in technical sense, but yes, that point is correct. Ten points to Ravenclaw. A dark creature is considered such by their nature and intent. Much like how we classify the Dark Arts in itself --"
A manticore. Off the target yet, but even still. "Again, Miss Thornton is correct. Five more points to Ravenclaw. My definition, a manticore is not a dark creature, but Miss Diablo just brought up the final point I wanted to make before we got into the heart of the lesson. While a manticore is not a dark creature, humans try to reason it off to be as we are their prey. They are a threat to us, and most humans therefore see them as evil. It is a biased judgment, but a commonly made error that is overall accepted. Ten points to Slytherin."
With that the Professor reached down and began to remove the covers on the four tanks before her. The first revealed a creature with a lot of resemblance to a dark cloak and was slithering ominously inside the tank; a lethifold. The second was a scaly monkey with webbed hands and had a hollow sitting on the top of its head that was full of water; a kappa. The third was in cased in water and had long brittle fingers that it was pressing against the glass as it grinned maliciously at the class; a grindylow. And the last she kept covered, for what was inside would shape-shift into the fears of the closest person.
"You have all learned about dark creatures and have observed them and even watched how to counter them or done so as a class. Today you will tackle each creature individually, relying on your personal knowledge of each of these creatures. The last one will be revealed when you lift the cloth and open the tank. I will set up boundaries within the classroom so that each creature is contained to a certain section when battled... kind of like little activity stations."
She gave them a moment to take that in and then smiled and asked, "questions?"

Allegra raised her hand again, the other quickly thumbing through her book for the page she wanted to refer to. It was a small point, but still one she wanted to clarify. "According to Vander Ark's writings, dark creatures can't really be considered animals because they don't have regular life cycles," Allegra contradicted, not really wanting to point out Professor Raynor's mistake, but at the same time a little disturbed that she had been accused of being... what was that word... wrong? Of course, Allegra didn't believe she was perfect, but she was confident in her resources and was positive they were correct.
She looked at the three uncovered tanks and sighed. Her patronus was decent, but not great. The Kappa and the grindylow were easy enough and she could only imagine what was under that last cloth.
