March 6th, 2009 4:32pm
The day was simple. For once there were only a few clouds in the sky, the wind was a light breeze, and the temperature was comfortably warm. And to top it all off, Dante was in a pretty good mood. The mixture of nice weather and a good mood had forced Dante out of hiding in the library. Instead he made his way out to the fountain of the courtyard. He wore his usual blue spring coat with one of his only white t-shirts and pair of jeans. Though he was still not the biggest fan of the jeans, they were comfortable enough for today. Unlike his normal routine he also wore a simple baseball cap, which was black with no distinguishing marks on it.
Taking a seat at the fountain he reached into his backpack and pulled out a book he was using for his big Arithmancy project. The Arts of Numbers, it was not an easy read, and more over it was not a fun read. In fact, it was the most boring thing Dante had read in a long time, and that was saying something when he thought about all the books that the other professors handed out all the time.
But he sat there not taking much interest in the other students out in the courtyard, those playing various games around the trees. Climbing up them or laying under them it did not matter to Dante. The kids could goof off all they wanted; so long as nothing hit Dante it did not really matter. He continued to stare into the book reading line by line everything he’d need to know about hue and math, of the magical properties that could be placed into work of art through angle, or color of paint, even through the numbers of objects in a painting. He was not really sure if this counted as an actual principle in Arithmancy, and he probably should have asked Davenport a long time before this about the topic. The class tended to be too distracted by something every time he actually tried. Granted it did not help that he always seemed to fall asleep in that class, which did not help. But so far he had found enough information on it to validate that it seemed like a good thing to work off of. So the studying continued, completely oblivious to his surroundings, except for the warm rays of the sun hitting the back of his neck, and the breeze that whistled past his ears.

Delilah was curiously upbeat today. Not usually so outspoken, but today, she really did want to say and do whatever she felt like, so long as it wasn't stupid. She seemed to be doing that a lot lately. Doing and saying stupid things that is. Delilah had woken up at the late hour of two, and she figured this new found energy was from the nice long sleep she had the night before. She slipped into some beige, plaid Capri's, brown flips flops, and left her curly brown, hair (well, it might as well have been a mop) down, and let it fall past her shoulders. With a light pink t-shirt to top it off, she was ready to go.
This girl stepped outside, and was pleasantly surprised to see how gorgeous it was to be out here. Delilah felt happy. This wasn't unusual, just didn't happen as often as she'd like it to. Having not had a good day in quite a while, she was determined to not let anything get her down today. Especially on such a nice day as this. She went strolling, letting her legs wander and her mind too. A couple fourth years had stopped her and asked her why they'd never seen her in any of their classes. She was a little annoyed, but smiled anyways. She had to explain she was a sixth year, and they simply didn't believe her. She shrugged, "Believe what you like, I can't help my height." She said, pushing past the small group and back to her thoughts.
What she spotted next was odd. A boy, trying to study among all the little rug rats that were running around, playing, climbing, jumping, and not having a care in the world. In a way, Delilah envied them. Ignorance is bliss. She could understand why he was out here, it was so beautiful outside, how could one possibly stay indoors? Unless one was an albino... And no, he didn't look like one. But why he was here, and not under the shade of the many trees they had here, she wasn't sure. It would be way more quiet than this anyhow. She approached him now, sitting next to him, not terribly close, but a good distance away. She made she he noticed her first before she spoke, she didn't want to scare the daylights out of him. "Beautiful day out isn't it?" She tried, looking around, and then back at him. "Not the best location for studying though." She added, grinning, gripping the bench they were on with her hands for a bit of support, crossing her legs underneath it.

He finished the fifth chapter, finally. It was still a dull read, even once he reached a portion that he actually thought might be interesting. But it all ended up being the same dull and routine equations and properties of numbers he was use to. Nothing seemed very new in this book, he could probably read half of it and figure out the second half on his own without having to deal with reading it.
At least the sun was warm and a welcome companion to his studying. So he turned the page and continued reading, almost being hit by a strange Frisbee-like object some lower years were playing with. It instead splashed in the fountain and got a small cut of his sleeve wet.
But then a figure approached and he took notice, though he did not look up from his studies. He could tell just from their approach that they probably intended to communicate with him, not that he really thought he was putting out a vibe asking people to come talk to him.
She asked her first question, and Dante could only answer with a quick “yeah just fantastic” as he finished the sixth chapter. He aimed to finish it so he would not have to look it back up later, then he could just start with chapter seven. At that point she made her second statement: “Not the best location for studying though." At that point Dante was finally able to shut his book and look up to see who was talking to him. But when he did he was shocked to see someone a good eight inches shorter than he was. And on top of that it was someone he had never remembered seeing before. “It’s…not a bad place to study.” He hesitated from being caught off guard, “better than falling asleep under a tree.”
Who was this girl that came up to him so quickly and decided to start up a conversation? There were so many other people out in the courtyard today, yet he was the one that seemed the most interesting? It must have been the hat; Dante thought to himself, the cursed thing always brought people over to him. He then paused and scanned the girl’s face again, just to make sure he did not recognize her. “I’m Dante, and you are?”

As Delilah sat there, the boy watched her and listened, not really answering whole-heartedly. She grinned and laughed softly at his next comment. She looked around again, everyone else was running and laughing, when suddenly, that frisbee flew right at her. She caught it swiftly and chucked it back at the younger kids, "Watch it will you!" She said loudly. Not screaming, and she still had a smile on her face, but still, she didn't think anyone would like getting hit in the face with a flying object. She looked back at him, "Well, this place certainly keeps you on your toes..." She said, surprised he wasn't on the ground from being hit by some sort of object.
Delilah smirked at his reaction when he looked at her. Was she really that small? Or maybe he was shocked to see her, this random person just coming up to him and starting a conversation literally out of thin air. "Delilah." She said, smiling warmly. She glanced at the book he had been reading through. It was rather large, and looked quite boring. "Surely you have better things to do on a day like this..." She said, looking from the book back up to him. She smirked at his hat... Hats never looked decent on anyone. At least she thought so. Perhaps people wore them just for attention... He didn't seem the type that wanted it though, but she didn't know him well just yet.

“Surely you have better things to do on a day like this” Well sure there were other things he could have done. He could have been searching for Tallulah and hanging out with her. Or maybe seek out Connor and go for a jog with the sun shining. Find Felicity, and probably through that find Drew and do something. There were many options available, but he had decided to read today in the sun. Even reading something for school work was a bit out of the ordinary for Dante, but then again what did he do on a normal basis? The answer was pretty much nothing, it all got to boring to do regularly. The thought was a bit uncomfortable to confront, and from such a simple question that he was asked by this girl.
So he shrugged and answered her question rather than think of it any farther, “something better?” he looked at the girls green eyes as he spoke, “maybe, but I was content to read for today.” He smiled, wondering if the girl would catch his play on tense. Although he was not opposed to this girl sidelining his reading. In fact, he welcomed the conversation, at least for now. He would have to wait and see how it all panned out.
He took off his hat after she smirked at him, letting his hair do what it wanted after released from this entrapment. He placed the hat on top of the book as the sat beside him now. “So, Delilah,” saying the name in part to bring it into his memory, “what brings you out to the courtyard today?” He let out a grin as he made his next comment, “felt like coming up to a stranger and meeting them?” He could have said bother, and really, he wanted to. Though he could not have been sure that she would take it as the joke he wanted.

Delilah eyed Dante. Content he has said. Content wasn't happy, or excited, or ecstatic. She smirked at him now, obviously he really did have better things to do. She also knew that she could've been doing things more interesting to her aswell. But she didn't have many friends, and the things she could've done, would only be boring. She eyed him, he probably had plenty of people he could be talking to, maybe she shouldn't have bothered trying. Everyone seemed to have someone else to be with, she was having such a hard time trying to make room in other peoples' lives.
She wondered if maybe he had read her thoughts... Because all of a sudden, he decided to take off his hat. She didn't know whether he looked more human now or not, but she could better remember at face when a hat wasn't involved. She grinned at his next question, "Ah yes, the Courtyard..." She started, not really knowing how to explain this, "I was lost in thought and randomly ended up here." She confessed, trying not to laugh at herself. She could be such a scatter brain sometimes... She grinned at his next comment, "Ya, I'm usually not this out going." She said, shrugging, "Something with the beautiful sun, too much UV Rays." Delilah grinned. She really hoped that was somewhat funny. Otherwise, she was a complete moron.
She looked down now, not really wanting to know what his reaction would be, and swung her legs. Wow, she really was that small. "I'm really not looking forward to O.W.L.'s..." She trailed off, not really remembering if she had stated whether or not she was a sixth year. Oh well, now he knew.

Lost in thought and randomly ending up in the courtyard? How strange. Dante thought to himself. Though he could see in his own situation accidentally ending up in the courtyard without noticing where he had gone. But it was still odd, and she even openly admitted it?
“Ya, I'm usually not this out going. Something with the beautiful sun, too much UV Rays." He let out a laugh at her comment, “yeah those Ultraviolet rays can really make people do crazy things.” He thought about it, and being outgoing was not really a bad quality to have, it got people to interact. And if you did it right you might even walk away knowing someone, even befriending them. It was just what he had decided to do not to long ago, and he got to meet some rather interesting people. “Nothing wrong with being outgoing,” he had to actually say something compared to what he was thinking.
"I'm really not looking forward to O.W.L.'s..." O.W.L.’s? This girl was in his or fifth year? Now he knew he had to have known her from somewhere. But he really did not recognize who she was; it was just really confusing to him. She must have been a transfer student, it was the only way he could not have noticed her. That or she was not in any of his classes. He was usually so careful in taking note of every single person that entered the room. Granted if she was a fifth year that would mean she would really not be in any of his classes. Either way, it was rather confusing. “You’re fifth year?” he asked rather confused. “I mean,” he paused hoping he wasn’t about to sound too harsh, “I don’t remember seeing you in any of my classes.” It confused him that he never noticed her before if she had been around this school the whole time. He knew the O.W.L.'s were for fifth year and N.E.W.T.'s were sixth year.

Delilah looked up, delighted. She was glad she could get someone to laugh. She often thought if the sorting hay put her in the wrong house. She always thought she belonged in Hufflepuff, like her father. She sighed to herself at this thought. She felt so out of place all the time... She'd pull through though, she just knew it.
"Nothing wrong with being outgoing. No, there really wasn't anything wrong with it, it was just difficult, and not many people were into it. And often, the results aren't what you were looking for. Though sometimes it ends in friendship, other times it ends in nothing more than an odd look, and the person walks away. Delilah was really hoping this wouldn't be one of those cases.
Maybe it would be... Delilah's heart sunk a little. She was a transfer, but she came here at the beginning of the year. She could remember every sixth year's face. Name, not so much, seeing as she hadn't taken the time to try and meet anyone. She sighed. But, why would he think that she'd be a first year? It only dawned on her now... she had said she wasn't looking forward to O.W.L.'s, but those were done and out of the way. "Speaking of those UV Rays... I'm a sixth year..." Maybe this feeble attempt at making friends was just that, feeble. And useless. And maybe even pathetic. She forced a smile back on, "Like I said though, I'm not really outgoing."

She was a sixth year? Well that made it all that more confusing for Dante. He could swear he had never seen her before in his classes. But did he say anything about it? Did she recognize him? Who knew, he could not even be sure how long she had gone to the school, but the confusion with the exam’s said something about her not being around the school all that long. Perhaps she had transferred just recently. He would not dwell on the subject though, as it seemed to be upsetting Delilah, judging by the tone he was hearing in her voice.
"Like I said though, I'm not really outgoing." That led to another option in Dante’s mind. Maybe she was not as new to the school as he thought; maybe she was just nervous about coming up to him? Hence the mistake on the exam name. Either way, he would not say much more about it, which took a lot for him to hold his comments in. Mixing those statements he could say with the confusion on the situation made for a poor ability to think. It would have given him a headache if not for the fact that he had been reading before. And in reading his mind was already in a headache, and fairly dead to the world.
“So not looking forward to the N.E.W.T.’s then?” He put one hand on the bench and used it as a pivot point. Dante angled his body more toward the girl, so that he could look her more straight in the face. Though from this way he now had to strain a bit in order to see her face as well. Sometimes sitting in the sun was not the greatest. “Yeah, well they shouldn’t be that hard,” he said with a smile, “though which ones are you not looking forward to?” It was a sneaky way to get information on what classes she was in. And he continued to smile, content with his secret method of research.

Delilah smiled now. She was trying her best not to be sensitive and really wished she could let her true self show. She also knew there was only a certain amount of being invisible to others that she could take.
“So not looking forward to the N.E.W.T.’s then?” Delilah laughed softly, "Course not! I'm not smart enough to not be nervous." She wasn't exceptionally brilliant, but she wasn't a troll either. She could get her head around things and what not, but she could never compare to some. “though which ones are you not looking forward to?” She bit her lip, not wanting to say all of them, but she really wasn't looking forward to any of them. "Potions and Transfiguration mostly." She said finally. "I tend to mix things at random, and that doesn't go over well in Potions..." She said, laughing at herself now.
Her parents had told her that she lacked a lot of what people call common sense. She'd set something random on fire the other day, and also she had been breaking and crushing things too. She was reckless, they had told her. She assured them that she was simply bored, and didn't know what else to do. They told her that she should transfer that willingness and creativity into making friends, and hence, here she was.
She wasn't sure how much she wanted to be here anymore. Not that there was something wrong with the company, just that it was terribly hot just sitting out in the open sun. "You dreading N.E.W.T.'s aswell?" She asked, not wanting to sound like she just wanted to talk about herself all the time. She swayed her feet back and forth, waiting for his reply now.

"Potions and Transfiguration mostly." Ah! Potions, no wonder he did not recognize her, he could say he was not in that class; which was at least a slight relief for Dante. He slept through most of Transfiguration as well, and if she was not afraid of Arithmancy he figured she probably was not in that class. “Mixing random things sounds like a great idea,” trying to sound as sarcastic as he possibly could. But then also remembering the fun he and a few others had during winter break in the Potions room. He never found out how long it took to sort everything out after that little incident, but it was so much fun.
"You dreading N.E.W.T.'s aswell?" Dante let out a short laugh at the thought, being afraid of some exams. “Naw, I’m actually looking forward to them. Just kind of want to get them over and done with.” He smiled at the girl, figuring she was not going to understand his confidence. Dante never worried for a test, he just could not grasp why people did either. The test would show if you were ready to go on or not, no matter how much cramming most of the students were going to go through on the night before. He shrugged “of course, as we get closer to them I might worry a little more,” figuring it would be better to relate to Delilah. He did not want to seem distant, though he might unintentionally do so.
A breeze was welcome and cooling as they sat out in the sun. But with how few clouds were in the sky the bright sun kept him from seeing most everything in front of him. “Maybe we should move out of the sun,” he suggested through squinting eyes, “can’t see a thing with it glaring down. Maybe find a tree to hide under.” He scanned around to see if any benches were free. Though he was be perfectly content sitting on the grass, so long as the shade kept the sun at bay. He picked up his book and hat anticipating that the girl would pick the spot for them to move to. If she wanted to move that was.

Delilah watched him as he listened to her talk and such. “Mixing random things sounds like a great idea,” She laughed softly. "Oh you should see some of the things I've come up with," she started, "explosions mostly..." She laughed again. She was actually enjoying herself. She was really glad of that. At this point she was beginning to wonder if he'd done anything of the sort. Even though she could hint the sarcasm in his comment, she wondered if there was any bit of truth in what he said. She would love to hear of any stories he might have, but maybe he didn't want to share them with her, and frankly, she didn't blame him.
“Naw, I’m actually looking forward to them. Just kind of want to get them over and done with.” Delilah nodded, "Yah, I feel that way too, except I don't really know how the results will be. I'll be crossing my fingers." She said. Delilah didn't think he was trying to sound majorly intelligent, in a way, she wished she had some sort of confidence. She had given up studying and cramming years ago, because every time she studied, once it came to the test, anything she learnt, was all gone. If she didn't learn it in class, she never learned it at all. It was a big downfall, but instead of fighting it, she just learnt to accept it, and do her best in classes. She was going to try to study any way though (she was too stubborn not to) but she wasn't sure how much good it would do her in the end.
As he spoke the next couple sentences, a bunch of kids started yelling and screaming. All she caught was move, sun, glaring, and... tree? She watched as he gathered his things and put two and two together. "Uh... right." She managed to say, hoping she didn't seem like too much of an idiot. She got up aswell though, scanning the trees and found a big leafy green one they could go to. She began walking to it, it wasn't far, and as she went, a few other younger students passed her by. She didn't take note of them, but they towered over her by a fair bit. She arrived at said tree and turned back, hoping Dante wasn't too far behind. She may have been small, but she was still quick.

(I apologize for taking a bit long)
He hadn't paid much attention to her response, he had only just then realized how much chaos was around them. When he had first walked out into the courtyard there were just a few students here and there. But now it seemed rather crowded to the Ravenclaw. Truthfully, he could not remember a time that he notices so many people around the courtyard, but that was perhaps his lack of going there very often. At any rate he was preoccupied by the abnormality of the situation to such an extent he almost missed Dalilah standing up and quickly moving to a spot she had chosen.
He jerked back around when her movement was caught out of the corner of his eye, nearly twisting his neck wrong wrong he winced just a bit as he anticipated a sharp pain. But it had not come, so he was at least lucky in that sense, perhaps the warm sun had kept his muscle relaxed enough to avoid the pull. At any rate it wasn't all that important, he had to figure out where they were headed. Once he realized the tree that Delilah was headed to he slowed his pace a bit. No need to rush in the nice weather. His free hand extended to the side of him, allowing the light wind trace his hand. When he arrived at the tree she was under he paused and looked around. Taking in the new location and perspective on the courtyard. The new angles, lines and corners he was unable to see before.
He then went back to Delilah and smiled, “Nice choice.” Not the most exciting thing he could have said at the time, but it really did not bother him much. Instead he crossed his feet just a little and brought himself down to the grass, in a cross-legged position. He then set down the book and hat to the side of him. “I'm sorry,” he waited a second to make sure she was ready to start back into their recently delayed conversation, “I never caught what house you were part of?” He had a feeling he knew which, or at least, he would be shocked if she was anything other than Slytherin. After all, everyone he seemed to hold a steady conversation with was Slytherin. Which always brought him to the conclusion he had been sent to the wrong house, a thought he shrugged off with a smile.

(no worries of course ;D)
Delilah had been looking back, and saw him wince from something. She hoped he was ok, and once he started on the path towards where she was, she knew that he was fine. She grinned as he sat down, and she sat down next to him at a comfortable distance, bringing her knees up to her chin comfortably. "Nice choice." Delilah grinned, "Yup, I thought so." She said, mock proud.
The small Slytherin girl looked around where they were now, taking in the bright scenery, putting it into the back of her memory for one of the better days here at Hogwarts. It was so green and luscious, terribly beautiful, and awfully warm. She was loving this day. Maybe not how busy it was outside, but of course, she couldn't blame anyone for wanting to be out here, but she couldn't really understand everyone else's rowdiness. She sort of shook her head at the younger students, averting her attention back to Dante.
She grinned, "Oh no worries." Delilah said, not blaming him one bit. "I barely heard what you said back there, I really don't know what all the hubbub about the Courtyard is today..." She said, trailing off. "Slytherin." She said plainly. Not proud, not really ashamed, but not ecstatic either. She never really felt like she belonged in the right house either. But apparently it was where she belonged. She had some ambition, but as for cunning, or powerful... She wouldn't use those words to describe herself. "Which house are you in?" She asked, trying to keep the conversation a two-way thing and not just about her. She was happy to actually be able to hear what they both had to say, while all the ruckus was away from them... for now.

Slytherin It stood to figure that she was a Slytherin. Not that he could tell by first glance, or even by judge of character. He could not tell such things usually, so it was purely off the fact that he knew so many. He wondered if she knew any of the people he interacted with. Connor, Brenton, and of course Tallulah. The thought of all three brought a smile to his face. He wondered what everyone was up to anyway. Connor could be doing just about anything, and who knows where Brenton was. And Tallulah, he both wondered what she was up to, and if Delilah might know her. Perhaps it would be heard later in the conversation. For now, more pressing matters, like responding to her.
“Ravenclaw” he smiled, hiding his distaste for the entire house system. He could not understand exactly why people found the houses so important. Did they mean that much now anyway? He took note of the distance she kept away from him. He made note that at both the bench, and on the grass under the tree she kept about the same distance between them. And the way she sat, knees under her chin, looked pretty comfortable, but he doubted he was flexible enough to even get his knees close to his chin.
A Frisbee past by and he remembered he was supposed to be part of a conversation right now. He figured he must have completely zoned out for a few seconds. And could only hope she hadn't walked off or thought poorly of him if she stayed. It was just the kind of day to daydream, and Dante was an expert at that.
He turned back to where the girl was sitting, and was happy to see that she was indeed still sitting next to him. A sigh of relief and a smile came across his face. “Don't let the house and carrying a book around fool you though, I'm not as interested in studies as many of my house mates.” He laughed at his own statement, even though he believed it to be true.
