It took some effort and energy, but alas, Beni... was studying.
She had remembered back in the wizarding school in London how bad she did her O.W.L.s, only making it to three. It partly wasn't really her fault, considering that she had just transferred to that school and the prats of professors didn't give an inkling about her being. But as a student of a prestigious school in Scotland, she had to hold her own this time, at least for the N.E.W.T.s. Despite being in seventh year, she honestly thought that this was a very trying year.
Yet it was proving to be a big challenge.
Reading up on some of her History of Magic texts, she quickly tried to work it out in her words for an essay that was due. But when she finished seven inches of the parchment, she put her quill down and sighed. "What a bugger." She looked up and to her dismay, found her sight to be blurred. Making another sigh, she slipped a hand through her bag and pulled out a pink and black embroidered case. Snapping it open, she pulled out her pink and black glasses and slipped them on.
Indeed, she recently wore glasses. Somehow the annoyance in not reading from far had gone to great lengths and she now had to wear glasses. It was a bugger to carry around, but she knew she had to just live on with them. The one good perk about them, however, was their ability to change in tint when the wearer wanted it to be changed. Looking around with her rose tints, she scanned the front desk. No Mr. Hailey, she thought in despair, and sat back in her chair. "What's there to do in a library besides gazing at him?" she said to herself.

Beni wasn't alone in the library that afternoon. Besides the seventh year Gryffindor's despaired question, only the crisp pages of old texts turning and quills scratching across parchment could be heard. Only a few other students were wracking their brains in that particular place, Alhana Starbreeze being one of them.
A thick mop of black hair was piled atop her head in a messy bun and it tilted to the side when she titled her head from behind the pile of books that was shielding her from view on the floor. Only the plushy pillow beneath her was keeping the experience from being painful. In a room as quiet as this, words, even low words, traveled far.
As she was only a row away, Beni's complaint reached her ears. "Gazing at whom?" Alhana asked curiously, gazing at her fellow Lioness from her sideways position with bright gray eyes.

Looking down the table to meet eyes with Alhana, Beni didn't hesitate to say, "Professor Hailer." She smiled, but it wasn't a usual greeting or miscellaneous kind of smile. She had the sort of far off look in her which was easily viewable, even when they hidden under the specs that grew a bit more rosier.
Her glasses, however, made her get off from her cloud as she took them off. "Hmm..." She inspected them in suprise. She seemed to be learning new things about her new specs every other day. Alhana probably wouldn't have noticed it too much, but Beni surely did.

Ah, back in his comfort zone. Not that Ryder hadn't liked teaching. Oh, no, it was quite enjoyable. He just preferred the quiet of the library a bit more. It was also a bit more enjoyable not to have so many eyes upon him at one time. At least, so he thought.
Coming around the corner with a stack of books in his arms, the librarian gave a small nod to the girls, paying no real mind to who they were, grabbed a misplaced book from off the shelves, replaced another to its proper place, then disappeared around the shelves again.

Whatever attention she gave to Alhana quickly evaporated the minute she saw the man of her dreams of the hour. Squeaking at even the fraction of the nod that she had received from Professor Hailey, she took that as a grand opportunity and invitation. Bumping all her books and parchment into her bag, Beni slung it back over her shoulder and promptly followed the librarian.
"Professor Hailey... Professor HAILEY!" She said once in a normal tone, twice in a desperate whisper that hovered below a holler. Whenever she would gain his attention, she bared a great friendly grin. "Hello, professor Hailey."

Alhana shook her head and then opened her mouth to ask if there was something wrong with her glasses when a rather handsome looking man greeted the two of them and then disappeared around a shelf. "Oh, brother...." she gazed up helplessly at the sky as if asking for help.
While the man was attractive, her Housemate was all but drooling (maybe if she'd only looked closer before she shot off after him) over him. Alhana tended to keep those thoughts to herself and dearly hoped she wouldn't be a bubbling like Beni was when she was a few years older.
"Keep your jaws closed, Beni! It's not proper to stare openly...." Alhana called out in a lofty voice, a sly grin spreading across her face in wait for her reply.

"Oh shushers, Alhana," Beni said with a joking smile. But Alhana was right. Her mouth was a bit open now that she realized it. "Besides, I need to open my mouth in order to ask Mr. Hailey here a very important question." She turned to the librarian and batted her eyelashes.

Tee-heeing a chuckle at the girl, Alhana continued to shake her head. She rolled her gray eyes again and promptly stood to her feet, letting her feet drift towards the two, curving slightly as if in a swoon. Two slender hands clasped together against her cheek and she batted her thick eyelashes at Beni in jest.
"Oh yes, Professor. Could you point me to where the love potions are? I have a paper due on them by next week, perhaps you could help me..." Alhana offered, dreamily sighing the word 'love', her lips spreading into a tight smile.

Beni looked back at her with an eye raised, as if to say, "Yes... you've got me there. I'm madly in love with a bloke who's much older than me. I'm not being subtle, am I?" Looking back at him again, she emitted a nervous giggle and said, "Oh these youngins these days. At least I'm of age now," she said, adding that unnecessary detail, especially since her 17th birthday was still all the way in October.

Ryder stared, quite dumbfounded, at the two girls. In all his life he had never, ever had a gaggle of females crowd around him. Such seemed to be happening more and more these days. Ryder would have to question the elves whether they were putting anything extra in the student's supper. This certainly wasn't normal. If it was...why him?
"Yes?" the man turned upon the older of the girls, the one who had called his name, trying to keep his voice even. He wasn't sure he should answer the younger girl's question, so he let it be for now. "May I help you?"

Beni looked at him with her grin still plastered to her face when she realized he asked her a question. She was about to say "Yes" to whatever it was (hoping in her mind his question was "Will you marry me?"), when she realized that she had a supposed question to ask.
"Oh... er... yes," Beni said through struggled words. She stalled, thinking, I don't have anything to ask him! What shall I say? Her eyes searched all over the room, maybe to produce a general Defense Against the Dark Arts question, but instead looked down a bunch of books on a nearby desk, a messy novel next to an instructional book on magical crafts. "Oh, yes," she repeated, stalling before it suddenly clicked. What an opportunity! she thought happily, and then replaced her look of question to one of happiness, but then deciding to change her expression of deep and interested inquiry.
"Um, Professor Hailey, I see here you've got all these books and absolutely no help!" That's a good start, she thought, Deny that no one worth competence is here to help. "So I was wondering-- since I'm so interested in books and all--I was wondering... would you mind if I was your assistant?" She beamed happily, more at herself, for coming up with such an ingenious plan. She looked up at him, her eyes filled with subtle desperation and plead, as if to say Please! If I don't surround myself around bloody books I'll bloody die!

"My....ahem....assitant?" Ryder questioned, raising a curious eyebrow. If his arms weren't full of books he would have scratched his head and thoughtfully rub at the scruff on his chin. There was nowhere to place the stack, though, so he was left staring stupidly at the young girl. What in the world would he do with an assistant, anyway? He liked spending his days wandering through the library, keeping himself busy re-shelving books and assisting students with finding what they needed. The only thing he would like to have was.....Ah, that was a thought. If he had an assistant, if even for an hour in the afternoons, Ryder could take a small break...maybe a nap....anything to get away from the students for a while.
"Sounds...sounds like a plan," the man replied, giving the girl a nod. Then, offering a tease, questioned, "You do know the alphabet, right? It helps to know that 'Q' comes before 'T'."

Beni's face instantly grew into a happy smile, excited that her plan was carrying through. More time with him! More time with him! Bloody fantabulous! she thought with a lot of excitement. But before she could say anything else, he happened to add on a joke. Librarian humor?
Still, just so Beni didn't mess up her chance, she laughed gleefully and even slapped her own knee. "Merlin! Professor Hailey, you keep up with those jokes of yours, and I'll have problems stacking books because I'll be in stitches."

The palm of her hand came up to smack her forehead as if to say "Oh, brother." What she did say, however, was along the same lines. "Gag me now." the younger of the two made a retching motion with her fists to her stomach.
Dark eyebrows flew up at Beni. "Assist with what, though?" she muttered under her breath so the man wouldn't dock points for her comment. The Lioness chuckled at her own insinuation.
"Oh, Professor!" she gushed in a mocking tone. "You're so funny!" she batted her lashes at him, once more putting on that dreamy look. "Funny AND handsome. Oh my, what ever shall I do?" Alhana stuck on a US southern accent for the last bit.

The corner of Ryder's mouth twitched ever so slightly. He had a feeling he might've made a big mistake just now. He wasn't about to let it be known, though.
"You could start by organizing the shelves at the back of the library," he told the older of the two girls, trying hard not to let the fact that he thought the younger one was a bit nuts be known. "It's rather dusty back there, too, so if you take care of that, I'll appriciate it greatly."
