"I'm sure we could, but none would be as interesting as one on how to tame a human lapdog," she replied. "Although, if I remember right, I was already on the path to that without a book."
She turned to look at the bookshelf opposite of Charon. She allowed her thoughts to wander back to the day they had met, which had not been long ago. She continued to look at the titles of books while she waited for Charon's reply.

Charon chuckled a little. "Heh. Yeah. Let's just say that it's probly best for me that you didn't have a collar at the time. And not so good for me that you didn't have some ice." As he said this, he touched the back of his head. It had stopped hurting randomly yesterday, but the bump was still there, if a bit smaller, and it still hurt when he touched it.
"Oh, this sounds interesting," he said. "'Ten ways to make a love potion, with focus on #9,' by N. Ylon"

Rael turned back to Charon with a slight blush, and shy smile. "Love potion #9? Good song, terrible potion." She looked up to his face, and allowed a more serious look to come over hers. "How is your head? Has the swelling gone down much?"
She reached up and lightly touched the bump he had gained, before he had a chance to respond. "And I slightly disagree with you. I think if I had had a collar, you may not have had your accident."

Charon winced as she touched the bump. "The swelling's gone down a little, and it only hurts when someone or something touches it," he replied. He put the book back and turned to Rael.
"I'm not sure you're right on that one. I don't think we started discussing the topic of me as a human lapdog until after I fell," he said. "Did you find anything interesting?"

Rael quickly withdrew her hand. "I..I'm sorry," she replied as she averted her eyes. "You are right," she continued. "However, had I had a collar to begin with, it would have brought up interesting conversation. And I'm sure lapdog would have been in the topics to choose from." She turned back to the bookshelf she had previously been looking at. She hesitated before she replied to his question.
"And no, I have not found anything worth reading." She started walking down the aisle to find a different section of books.

Charon had to work at holding in his laughter. "I can only imagine the conversation we would have had if you were carrying around a collar," he said.
He moved over to the section of books right next to Rael's. As he looked for an interesting book, he watched her out of the corner of his eye. How long ago had they met? It had only been a few days, no more than a week at the most. However long, it was a meeting he would never forget. After all, one tends to remember such interesting things.

"I can see it now," she replied. "I walk up behind you, with a collar mind you, and introduce myself after you jump ten feet in the air. I follow you, you tell me your lost and ask if I know which way to go. After I reply no, we wander a bit more, and you ask about the collar." She stopped there, her eyes still on the titles of the books she was gazing at. Her face showed no hint of laughter or amusement.
She had been up early that day, and had had a long talk with one of her yearmates in the kitchens about things that she was not good with. Her mood had been off for the majority of the morning, when she had seen Charon sitting surrounded by his piles of books she thought it would help her to clear her mind a bit, but it didn't seem to be working the way she had hoped.

"Ah, but that's where it gets interesting. You have to have some reason for carrying around a collar. And if you don't feel like telling the truth, well, I have faith in your ability to make up some strange lie," Charon said, smiling.
As he glanced over at Rael, he noticed that she seemed a bit tired and distracted. "Is everything all right?" he asked.

"You have faith in my lying abilities? I'm not sure that is such a good thing," she replied still without much amusement. When Charon asked his question, she knew she could not tell him what she had been told, it was in confidence Jorja had even told her.
"Yeah," she began with a weak smile. "I was just up earlier than normal, and I was in a great mood then. But I went down to the kitchens and talked with one of my housemates, and things were not good from there." She looked up into his eyes, and couldn't help but regain the same feeling she had the first time she had looked into them. Rael knew her dark blue eyes couldn't mask everything she had learned, but she didn't want to hide anything from Charon, anyway. She just couldn't tell him what she had been told without breaking the girl's trust.
"Besides, you should know I'm always all right in your presence." She smiled genuinely and waited for his reply.

As Rael looked into Charon's eyes, he sensed that there was probably more that she wasn't telling him. Heck, her eyes just about gave it away. But he knew better than to push anyone into anything except a locker. If she didn't want to tell him more, he would be content with whatever she did want to tell him. He flushed slightly at her last comment and smiled back at her. He gave her a quick kiss on the forehead, then went back to looking at the books.

When Charon's lips lightly touched her forehead, she smiled and quickly turned back to the books. She continued to scan the titles, but nothing looked even mildly interesting. "Banshees: The Woman Behind the Wail. Now this could be different, father would definitely like it," she turned toward Charon smiling again. I don't believe I've even told him anything about my family, she thought. She turned back toward the books. Magical creatures section, she thought. Of course things here would be interesting and to father's liking.

When Charon heard Rael's voice, he turned and replied, "They need to write a book about large, aquatic banshees. They could call it 'The Whale Behind the Woman.'" He returned his attention to the books, and kept looking as he asked, "So your father likes banshees, then?" He would be very surprised if she answered yes; he didn't know of anyone that liked banshees.

"Yes, actually, he likes all magical beings and creatures. When we were younger, he used to scare us with stories of banshees, and mother, too. Scare mother with the stories about banshees, not us with stories about mother," she laughed. "My father's favorite thing about the magical world are the creatures. They are how he decided to work for the Ministry. But, yes, father loves Banshees, mostly so he can frighten mother, she is very Irish, and believes in the old folklore."
She kept her eyes looking over the books, anything to scare mother was welcome. "My father is a muggle-born, and I suppose that is his reasoning for being fascinated by magical creatures and beings. Of course, anyone who has been by our home would know he was fascinated with the creatures by our farm." She turned to look at Charon with another smile. "However, being as you have never been to my home, Rone, you wouldn't know."

Charon chuckled at the idea of scaring someone with stories. It sounded like the sort of thing he would do. He often enjoyed finding ways to jokingly scare another person. "Yeah, you're right that I wouldn't know. Unless I've somehow been to your house, and then it's been erased from everyone's memories. And somehow random bits of knowledge about your family have been saved. But seeing as I don't remember that, I don't think it happened."
He looked over at Rael, and saw her looking at him. "So is your mother muggle-born, too, or what?" he asked.

Rael smiled at what he had said, but lost the smile when he asked about her mother. Was her mother a muggle-born? What a joke. She was from a prestige family, a prestige pureblood family. She turned back to the bookshelf and pretended to become absorbed in finding another book for her father. She thought of how to answer Charon's question without having to go into much detail on her mother's thoughts.
"No, no, my mother is a pureblood," she replied with a touch of bitterness on her words. "A pureblood that passes her family off as purebloods, as well." She paused and turned to look at Charon, her eyes much harder than the tone of her voice. "Our family has had the pleasure of living the life of purebloods, although, in reality we are only half-bloods. Except mother, of course, her blood is as pure as it comes nowadays." She stared at Charon and hoped he would catch what she was saying about her mother's beliefs, without having to say them.
