Drew pulled out his wallet as soon as he saw the bartender come back with the drinks, but Nathan managed to get the money down before Drew could. He appreciated the gesture, but it always made him feel guilty when people treated him, especially when he had a strong suspicion that the other person had better things to spend the money on than buying him stuff. Still, he graciously gave his thanks and promised to get the next round.
Drew gave an embarassed sort of shrug, still thinking that being smothered with hugs and kisses was way better than the treatment he got from his Nana. "It's nice that they're so involved with him," he stated. "It must make things easier on you to have them there."

"They live in the States," Nathan informed the younger man, "This is the first time they've been over here in almost a year." He decided not to mention the accident again and carefully skipped over it. Nathan stared at his bottle of beer, tearing at the label and picking it off in little pieces. He glanced around him and turned his body to rest against the bar again. Nathan swirled his drink around before he looked up at Drew again.
"Now that we're a little more free to talk, tell me more about this training," the groundskeeper suggested, "What are they having you do?"

Drew nodded, remembering that he had heard that somewhere. Had it been from Allegra, or something Cooper had said to him? He couldn't remember the details, but was pretty sure he had been told that there was family back in the States. But the subject changed and Drew took it as a sign not to ask more about family.
"Not a whole lot," he answered with a disappointed shrug. "Right now, it's a lot of paperwork and delving into theories. We don't get into actual field work until next year. Until then, I'm pretty much the errand boy." And boy did he get sent on some stupid errands. It seemed like the favorite one to send him on was anything that made him pass by a certain secretary's desk. They seemed to like watching the new guy get his butt grabbed.

"Well at least it's something, right?" Nathan suggested optimistically, "It might be pretty crummy right now, but it'll get better when there's more field work." He took another swig of his drink, silently envying Drew. He had always wished he's pursued something like law enforcement after school and his parents really weren't too pleased with the decision he'd made. But after the accident, Nathan had realized that he couldn't risk having such a dangerous job. If anything happened to him, where would that leave Cooper? It wasn't fair to the boy, so Nathan had stuck with someone a little less life-threatening.
"And just think about it," he said with a grin, "When there's another new guy, he gets to be your errand boy."

"Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for," Drew answered with a small shrug and a smile. "I figure if I show them I can do all the stupid stuff really well, then they'll give me bigger and better stuff to do." It was already starting to work. There was talk about letting him work on some of the raids they were doing. Granted, it was still only the paperwork part of it, but it was something.
"Yeah, see the thing is I thought that way when I was a firstie and made to sleep in the hallway," he told Nathan. "I kept telling myself that next year, it would be my turn to do it to the new kids... but I never had the heart to do it. I mean, I'll probably go ahead and fill the new guy's locker with pixies because, honestly, that was pretty classic. But naw, I'm not going to go make him get sandwiches or send him on nonsense errands."
