The first year of Auror training really wasn't as exciting as all that. Drew hadn't really expected to be hunting down Dark Wizards during his first week, but he hadn't realized how much reading and paperwork would be required those first few months.
The Senior Aurors he was working with were good, mostly patient, and on a few occasions shared stories of some intense duels they had been through, tough cases they had worked on, or crazy escapades they had participated in during their reckless youth.
It was totally, amazingly cool.
If anything, working with the experienced Wizards made Drew work harder, anxious to go out into the field alongside with them, do what they were doing, see the action they were seeing.
But for the moment, he was taking a break, sitting in the commissary with his books scattered on the table along with his lunch. His focus was on neither study materials or sandwiches though. His attention was on the letter he was writing, focused on the quill to paper instead of the person approaching.
{SO TOTALLY OPEN!}

Shay had become more disgruntled with the Ministry, more so than ever. Not only was she becoming more influenced by the cynical points of view and the conspiracy theories that floated around the Daily Prophet, but she hated to go the Ministry of Magic, because it always meant a photo-op. So now she could clearly associate the headquarters as a place where stuffy old men posed in front of cameras, their decrepit hands holding onto each other in what was cleverly disguised as a handshake. She cringed at the sight of doing one more.
However, the worst was over, and she was no longer with camera in hand. Everything was packed and gone, and no old men were laughing heartily as they posed for a picture. Although as she managed to forget about them, she also managed to get off at the wrong floor.
The tide of workers and civilians put her on the shores of a different floor, where she walked aimlessly, looking down at her agenda of the coming week. By Friday's memorized schedule she looked up, seeing not the usual way to the exit of the building, but rather a more sociable area, with scattered documents and even some bags of lunch. She was amongst the living, a living different than her own, and she could sweat at the idea of what was in each of these documents.
Still, her curiosity had to put a stopper on itself and she made a U-turn, looking quickly around until she saw a figure seemingly in a bowed position, however, with a pen and paper to his hand. The hair gave it away and she could imagine a smirk on the unseen face, very, very similar to her roommate Allegra's. That's riight, she thought excitedly. "Drew?" She questioned carefully, hoping that the generalization of her best mate's brother and the Ministry of Magic didn't make her think that any sandy-haired young man would be Thornton.

The sound of his first name caught him by surprise. Around the offices he was called by his last name and it took him a moment to realize he recognized the voice. He looked up and over at the person who spoke and instantly smiled. He knew that Shay was technically Allegra's friend, but she had always been nice to him even when he had been a dorky little second year trying to figure out girls.
Of course, now he was a dorky eighteen year old, still clueless about girls, but he could hardly be called little.
"Shay?" he answered, jumping up and hugging what was a familiar and friendly face. He wasn't sure if Aurors went around hugging people, but he didn't care. Shay was a welcome sight in a Ministry full of unfamiliar people.

Drew was barely around Shay enough to call him the little brother she never had, but if he did, then he would rightfully have that title. It all stemmed from a great moment perhaps a year before she left Hogwarts, when in the great, white snow they discussed an urgent matter at hand: girls. She couldn't tell what exactly happened beyond the that day except some words said in passing by Allegra, or even by Drew when he was around for breaks.
And yet she couldn't see him having troubles. He grew a huge deal from his curious 12 year old version which she still often wanted to keep seeing him as, however he was now 18 and most likely making the receptionists at the Ministry blush. It made her proud to see him grow up to such an ambitious young man, even if his dream was associated with government that was getting harder to trust. But she tried not to focus on that for now. The hug he gave her was enough to make her happy and distracted from their current environment. "Ooooh Drew!" she said with affirmation as she let go of their hug. "I can't believe it's you--! Here--! Training!" She looked up at him from her comparatively short height of 5'5", "I hope they're treating you right here."

Drew dropped his hold on her and did a small happy dance right there in the middle of the Ministry commissary. It always made him feel great when people got excited over his accomplishments and it was especially meaningful considering Shay had known him since he was a kid. Granted, he knew a lot of people still considered him a kid, but he hoped he was closer to being a grown up.
"Didn't think I could really do it, did you?" he teased, knowing she always showed confidence in him. "What are you doing here? Can I buy you lunch?"

"Are you crazy?" Shay said with a grin, aware of his teasing, but still wanted to let him know that she supported him. Now she wanted to keep a closer eye on what was going to go on in the Ministry, now that she had one of her best friends' little brothers right there in the action. Looking at him in his auror-in-training glory made her protective of him.
She put her hands on her hips and shrugged at him. "Prophet duties. More boring photo-ops and press releases. Let me tell you, these people could make a press release about a new loo stall if they could get away with it." She shook her head and moved her hair out of her eyes. "But don't worry yourself! I'll cover my lunch... that is, if you're not too important and busy to have some lunch with me." Now it was her turn to do the teasing.

As soon as she mentioned photo-ops, Drew struck a dignified pose as if he was the Minister ready to have his portrait taken. He tried a body builder stance thinking that might suit Shay better but finally settled on a traditonal fashion model pose. "I don't know if I can get you any reports about the mens room, but I heard some dirt from the maintenance department," he told her. It was more of a weak pun than any actual news of course. The custodians had gotten a bunch of new self sweeping brooms. Whoopie.
"Naw, I want to treat... for old times sake," he answered, grinning at the idea of him ever being too important. He picked that notion up and decided to switch over to his Minister pose again. "Besides, now that I'm an Auror and bringing in the big bucks..." That was a joke. As a trainee, he really didn't get much of a pay check at all.

Shay laughed when he began to pose. Immediately she complemented his playful moves by forming a rectangle with her fingers, as if picturing how exactly the picture should look like with each pose. It was a small moment, but it brightened Shay up even more. Normally she didn't have the time nor the interest to joke around with her coworkers, who were often buried too deep in work to care about light-heartedness. "I'll want a complete report on my desk soon then! And I want every word," she said afterwards.
"Since when did you treat me to anything?" Shay asked, but it became more of a rhetorical question. "Well, I guess we can make an exception. I'll gladly let you treat me today." She looked at the boy (yes, she couldn't quite bring herself to call him young man) and smiled. "It can be my birthday gift from you," she added, conjuring the reminder to herself that her birthday was coming up soon. With everything in her life, she was tending to forget that she would be getting one year older.

Drew laughed back as she played along, blocking the shots he was pretending to pose for. He probably looked like an idiot, goofing off in the Ministry cafeteria, but he really couldn't be expected to be all business like and somber every minute of every day.
"Since I became an Auror?" he tried, grinning back at her. He was glad she agreed, always feeling good when he could do something nice for a friend, even if it was something as small as buying lunch. He just didn't know it would be in lieu of a present.
"It's your birthday?" he asked, feeling kind of bad for not knowing that, but then realizing there was really no way he would. He had long considered Shay a friend, but she had always definitely been more his sister's friend. "So this all works out! Happy birthday!"

Shay immediately shook her head to correct him. "No, not yet. October first is my birthday," she grinned though at his acknowledgement of her birthday. It came early, but she appreciated it greatly for she wasn't too sure that she was going to hear it a lot on her actual birthday, since it would fall on a Thursday, which was commonly her busiest days. "But thank you! And it still does work out, since we can also celebrate your achievement of being an auror-in-training!"

"We'll save the big party for when I'm finished with training," he told her, pulling a chair out so she could take a seat. "But October. Not too far away, right? We're just a couple of weeks early. Totally within the acceptable birthday giving period."
"So what are you going to have?" Drew asked, ready to brave the line again and pick up what she wanted. "I hear the knockwurst is fresh today, but I'd stay away with anything containing dragon meat. Been there, done that this summer. It wasn't pretty."

"I'd say we're in the time period of gift-giving, yeah," Shay agreed, "Besides giving gifts on the day itself is too common-place. I think the genuine surprise comes in really not knowing when you're going to get something." She set her things down next to his and grabbed a nearby chair to sit on it. It was interesting to her to just sit down and relax for now, and let someone else handle the orders for her. Though she's been working in the Prophet for a little more than a year now, she was barely off of the bottom rung.
"Hmmm...." she pensively tapped her fingers on the table, or rather wherever she could set her hands on the table, since it held a lot of Drew's auror books. Her eyes lingered there for a second, making sure to sneak some peaks when he was to go off into the line. She would have liked to know what he had to learn, especially with the new curriculum implemented to help with the lack of a Defense class. Her eyes moved right back up to the big board displaying the menu. "I'm in the mood for simple chicken sandwich. And pumpkin juice?" She checked with him to see if this was all right, even though she made sure not to accidently choose a more expensive dish.

Drew answered with a smile and a quick salute before jogging over to the queue by the counter and picking up the request. Putting the sandwich and juice on a tray, he also added a couple of cookies just because he had seen them pulled out of the oven and decided he had to have one. Bringing the whole thing back to the table, he pushed his things to the side before placing the tray down.
"Sorry, let me clean up my crap," he said, stacking his books together and putting his letter, quill and ink off to the side where it wouldn't be in the way. It was a good thing the cafeteria wasn't too crowded and he could still take up some extra room without infringing on anyone.

Shay had already had one of his books in hand, looking at the techniques explained. It had been some interesting material that he had to read up on, and she was surprised to see some things that she had learned before. Then again, she had been around when they had a strong, existent Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Plus, it brought her back to the short lived series of lessons with Sora that taught her the dark side of magic.
When the latter thought crossed her mind, she felt all of a sudden grave. Shay knew what she had experimented with years ago... would anyone else know? Did anyone have the same intuition like the shady man she had met a year and a half ago. Suddenly she felt too inappropiate to be reading the book.
Still, as she heard his voice, she brightened back up. "Oh, it's okay! Where are you in this book now?" She raised an eyebrow, though she wanted to say that she could deduce with the way certain pages might have looked at a certain point.

It was only then that Drew realized that Shay had one of his books. He figured it wasn't that big of a deal if she read it. First year trainees were hardly privvy to Ministry secrets and even if they were, it wasn't like they'd be in a text book.
"You mean me personally, or the class? We're only through the first couple of chapters," Drew answered as he finished stacking his things off to the side. "But it's still the beginning of the program, so we've got a lot more to go. It's not all that hard getting through the stuff though. The harder part is doing all the paperwork and being the errand boy for the department."
