Ash looked over at Drew, " Erm- would it be okay if we just moved on?..." she asked with a slight smile. " It doesn't seem like they want to answer and we have a few more stops to go to... of course, we can stay if you guys would perfer it to be that way." she said and looked down at the candy bar in her hand.
She remembered Halloween, her mother would always take her on the usual route. She wouldn't get too much candy although it was enough to suit her appetite. Ash hadn't been trick-or-treating in Amherst since she was about nine. She clearly remembered one particular Halloween night.
((occ: the rest of the post is just me getting carried away with Ash's childhood))
Ash was five years old, a year and a half after Ivy and her father had left them. Her mother was still a bit cold after the divorce-- not fully healed. Ash was so excited, she said that Halloween was her favorite Holiday. (although she also claimed that Christmes, Easter, and New Years were her favorite holidays too.) She was dressed as a plump pumpkin that year. Her mother and her set off on their route around the neighborhood.
After a few hours her bag had gotten a fair amount of treats, her feet were tired and her forehead drenched in sweat.
" Ash, wo mein zou ba?" her mother said, bending down to her level.
" Wo bu yo zou! Mama aih, zhei se chi ding zhong!" Ash laughed as she held her mother's hand in her own. She smiled at her, one of her front teeth missing.
Her mother gave in and agreed to go a few more blocks. She came home with a full bag, although was too tired to be happy. She fell asleep right away. Ash's mother beamed at the sleeping toddler... So this is what I have to take care of?... So be it...
Ash made her way to her kindergarten class the next day, full spirited. She had brought all the candy from home, it was all that she had managed to collect the other night. She was beaming the whole day, until lunch. She sat her her usual spot, the far ends of the lunch table. It seemed that many kids had brought their share of candy that day, she smiled, seeing that her's was the biggest. A fat boy, named Travis, stared hungrily at her candy although didn't want to make it seem obvious that he was looking. He whispered into the ears of the other's around him.
"Eh! Xin, lemme see your candy!" the boy called, as his friends sniggered.
Ash's mouth dropped open, were they actually... talking to her? Were they trying to be friends with her? This was great! She nodded quickly and brought her bag over to their side of the table. It would be better than anything if they were to actually like her. Ash couldn't bring herself to say anything though-- she was too excited.
The fat boy scrummaged through the bag, and finally looked back up to the waiting students. He smirked and held the bag up in front of everyone. Ash looked up at it curious about what this was about. The boy stood up and brought the bag over to the bucket of soap used to mop the cafeteria. Her eyes widened, finally realizing their intentions. She still couldn't speak, silently watching the bag fall from his hands- and finally splash into the mucky water.
Ash couldn't remember what had happened next although knew that the boy's pants blew up (along with his boxers). Her mother was thrown into a screaming rage that afternoon- and her happy Halloween was ruined.
