Charon had thought this through several times. As of yet he wasn't sure why it had happened--or he had to make it seem so--but he was sure that the murder had happened. "And what do we do when--sorry, if--we find out it's not just rumors?" Charon asked softly, almost to himself. "Obviously we continue to give her respect, but if she's not dead, then why are we under lockdown. I can't think of a single thing I've heard that makes sense besides this. Either it would have to be so large and extravagant that everyone would know for sure, or it has to be this, from my perspective. And my money, were I so morbid as to bet on something like this, would be on this as most likely," he continued.
He knew that someone would likely yell at him for saying that, but he thought it better to voice his opinion and have people ready for what was coming than stay silent and watch everyone fall into a state of shock the instant a teacher told them what was going on. "I think the greater question here, though, isn't what happened. I think it's more a question of why." With these final words, he got up from his chair and withdrew to a secluded part of the room before anyone started yelling. If the announcement hadn't told them to stay in the common room, he would have gone up to his dorm to avoid what was surely coming. As it was, the best he could do is cut himself off from the group and wait. And watch.

Clambering into the common room, his arms loaded with books, Aston glanced around the room, as baffled as anyone about the whole situation. He had been with his brother down in the library when the announcement came. The student assistant overseeing the library had been so flustered, she didn't even bother to check the books out before shoving the boys out and telling them to hurry to their respective houses.
"Whot's going on?" Aston questioned, setting the books down on the nearest table. He ran a hand across his forehead and plopped into the nearest chair. "Bloody 'ell, it's a mess out there. Kids running everywhere...Surprised I didn't lose anything."

Samuel saw his friend Aston walk in and ask what was going on. But despite he didn't want to Allegra mad at him, he sat there still quiet. He didn't move a muscle or his mouth.

"We're not sure Aston, but whatever it is, it's serious," Allegra answered, feeling bad for snapping at Sam. "I'm sorry Sam," she said, going over to him. "A lot of us... Me... This has made me tense. I just don't want to add any falsehoods to what's happened." She had already reached the same conclusion that Charon had. The buzz seemed to be that Madame Thorne was dead and the fact that they were on lockdown gave creedence to the story that she had been murdered.

He looked at her, "It's okay," he said to her. He was worried of what will happen to Tristan. "But, Ms. Thornton, why... If it's true, why would anyone want to kill her? Why not Raynor, or Ticloon, or ...whoever," he asked her.
He knew she probably wouldn't have the answer, because she didn't know what was going on, but he was still curious of what she was going to say.

"Sam, stop calling me Miss Thornton," she said with a short laugh. "I was still sucking my thumb when you were born." It was true, she had stopped at the age of 8.
"And I don't know why. She seemed like a nice old lady to me," she added.

In his corner, Charon considered this. Why had this teacher been chosen? Why not the headmistress or deputy headmistress? He thought it over, and came to a conclusion, thoough not nessecarily a correct one. "She's less important than the other two. They now have to deal with her death, and try to keep things calm. IF one of them had been killed, the Ministry'd step in and take over, but this way it means more trouble for those already in power," he mumbled to himself. He hadn't realized he'd spoken out loud until he'd finished. Then he looked up to see if anyone had heard, but with any luck, he was far enough away that no one had.

Taryn stood as close to the wall of the common room as she could while still being able to hear the conversations going on around her. She was quite unsettled about the entire thing. Sure, she'd never had Professor Thorne for any lessons, but she had seemed like a nice lady. Maybe she had done something horrible, but no one deserved to be killed. Well, unless they had done something really, really horrible.
Folding her arms across her stomach, the first-year leaned against the wall, rubbing her hands up and down her arms and rocking forward and backwards on her heels. Maybe if she could just find someone to talk to or stand with... Or anything to get her mind off the situation at hand.

As the chattering kept going on, students--especially younger students--started to look more and more concerned, even scared. While nobody seemed to be panicking yet, it might only be a matter of time. He put two fingers to his lips and whistled loudly, the symbol for everybody to stop talking and listen to him for a moment.
"Okay! Everybody, listen up. Something has happened. We're not sure what it is, and everything we've heard now--no matter whom we've heard it from--is all rumours. Speculating and spreading rumours isn't going to do anybody any good, okay? Now, everybody, just take a deep breath, and we'll wait for a professor to tell us what happened."

Post by Tamis Raynor on Apr 27, 2006 18:05:22 GMT -5
By the time Professor Raynor made it to Ravenclaw Tower she was exhausted. The trek up the many floors of Hogwarts was almost too much to handle. The tiny professor was in superb health, however, the run to Hogsmeade, the jog back, the staff meeting and taking measures to make sure everyone had returned to their common rooms had brought on a strong bout of fatigue. She was tempted to blame half of it on pregnancy, though Raynor knew that after such a "thrilling" two hours, she would be close to this condition anyhow.
However, it would have taken a deathbed to keep her away from the Ravenclaws tonight. Well, perhaps that was not the right analogy at the current. But that did not make it any less true.
Reaching the gargoyle, Tamis took a moment to gather her wits and then after about a five minute confrontation with Old Stoney to prove that she was indeed Tamis Raynor, Deputy Headmistress, Ravenclaw Head of House, and Defense Instructor, and not some impostor aided by polyjuice potion, the portal of the common room at last opened.
Many ashen and blank faces looked back at her, and though she probably looked even worse off herself, her gaze still remained intent. Physically exhausted, and mentally weary, but she still had it together.
"Couldn't have said wiser words myself, Mr. McCrea," she stated, some of that tiredness seeping into her voice. She had not heard his entire speech, but she caught the end of it.

Charon was roused from his thoughts at the sound of Raynor's voice. It was time to hear confirmation of his theory about the reason for the lockdown. At least, he hoped he'd be hearing confirmation. Though it was a morbid thing to hope for, he did so since anything else would mean he had deduced incorrectly. And he hated to attempt to solve a puzzle only to find out he'd solved it wrongly. He gave the professor his full attention and waited for her to explain what had happened. He doubted he'd hear any interesting details, though.

Kellen turned quickly to face the Deputy Headmistress as she spoke. "Thank you, Professor," he said softly. Then, he waited for her to tell them something. Anything. Sure, he'd acted like he was in no rush to find out what had happened, but he desperately wanted to know. He'd just wanted to keep everyone calm while they waited.

Their eyes were still on her in a questioning manner, and for the first time in a long time it hit Tamis that they were indeed just children. They could not be rational about this, most would be scared out of their minds. While not a significant veteran, Professor Raynor had fought in the Second War. It was easy to forget that not everyone had seen the the things that she had; experience the things that she had.
For a moment she contemplated telling them a watered down truth. But that would not help them. But she would say no more than she had to.
"For all of your protection, Hogwarts has been placed under a lockdown. No one is able to get in or out, though we will be allowing the Ministry access soon enough," she paused, meeting their gazes in a resigned manner. "A Hogwarts professor was murdered today during the Hogsmeade Trip. Avery Thorne, whom some of you may have had for Ancient Runes. The murder is still on the loose."
She paused again and swept over the faces of her Ravenclaws, waiting for hysterics, panic, shock, or anything else that may elude from this. Her gaze caught on Allegra. Of course, she would want to know about her brother.
"Allegra, Drew is with the Headmistress. I am afraid I do not know when he will be back, but he will come here. He is fine, in good enough health when I last saw him."
It was both a signal of her exhaustion and the sincerity of her concern. The Deputy rarely referred to students by first name.

Scott had been sitting by himself, not sure what to think. The things people were saying had caught him off guard, he himself had been in the dormitory all day, not having wanted to attend the Hogsmeade trip. he was more than grateful when Professor Raynor came into the common room and explained things. Lockdown? A murderer was loose? Although Scott didn't know the professor that had been murdered, but his heart went out to those who did.
There was no amusement to be found in this situation, so Scott was not sure what to do. That was how he often dealt with things, by finding amusement in them. Scott's brown eyes traveled along the students, and they found the face of someone he recognized fairly well, Lily. he wondered how she was taking the situation, whether she had known the professor or not.

As I expected, Charon thought. A part of him wanted to jump up and shout that he'd been right, that he'd known someone had been murdered. But he knew that if he did that, he'd not only make a lot of his housemates mad at him, but he'd also likely tick off Raynor. Which could be very detrimental to his well-being. So instead of following his strange instinct, he merely bowed his head out of what would be seen as respect for the dead. It really wasn't, though. He'd never known the teacher, and the deaths of those he hadn't met were inconsequntial to him. The reason he'd bowed his head was to ensure that no one would notice any gleeful look that may possibly come over his face.
