Drew pulled his knees up to his chest and rested his head on top of them. "I trust you..." he said softly. Of course, that didn't mean he needed to tell her anything... especially stuff like this.

Lily recognized that knee thing at once. Now she definately knew that something was wrong. That was the defensive, well no maybe that was the wrong word for it. All she knew is that was what one used when they were feeling vulnerable and afraid. "Somedays I wonder," she said. She didn't mean too, it just sort of slipped out.

"Wonder what?" Drew answered, looking up at her and frowning. Just because he trusted certain people didn't mean he had to tell them everything, did it? Sometimes it was better just to keep certain things to yourself.

"What the word trust means," Lily said, the one of the two things she wondered. "I mean, how do you define trust? It's just -I'm not sure - what trust is?" She shook her head. "That probably doesn't make any sense."

"Trust is just... trust," Drew answered with an unsure shrug, still not understanding what she meant and even less sure about where she was going with this particular line of questioning.

"Alright," Lily said. "I didn't think even you could explain it even better than that." She looked down at the ground. "It's just one of those things you can't really explain. Like trust and hope and faith and even love. They don't have explinations and I think it's meant to be that way. Cause I don't think those are things you are meant to explain with just words."

Drew stayed quiet, looking at the leaves on the ground as he played with the string of his sweatshirt hood. "I think you just kind of know them..." he finally answered in a quiet little voice.

"But not until someone teaches you," Lily said. "You aren't born knowing how to love or trust or have faith or hope. Those come with learning." She stared down at the ground. She didn't know if her theory was even at all close.
((I'm an awful procrastinator lol))

"No, it's the opposite," Drew answered almly and confidently. "Babies are born with all of that stuff. It's the crap we go through while we grow up that teaches us to hate and mistrust."

"But how can you love," Lily said. "If no one's ever loved you? How can you trust if no one's ever trusted you? How can you have faith in someone if no one has faith in you? How can you hope for something, if no one has hoped for you?"

"Because that's the nature of being a baby," Drew answered, not sure what she was getting at. "They're all trust and love and hope at first. It's when people let them down that they learn otherwise. The more they're let down, the more they learn the opposite."

"Then why do people let them learn otherwise?" Lily asked. "Shouldn't they know better than to ruin that? Those are the most important things you can have in life, shouldn't someone be out there protecting them?"

"They should, but that doesn't mean that they do," Drew answered. "There are some crappy people in this world... from the guy who beats up his wife and kids all the way down to the brat who told my little cousin that there's no such guy as Santa. And that's not even taking into account the accidents that happen... the bumps and brusies that a kid gets just by being alive."

"Tell me about it," Lily mummured in agreement to that. "Like I said, there's a reason we can't remember that and I think that's because everything was too good back then. We'd like have heart attacks or something."

"But I'd rather live like this than live in a protective bubble my whole life," Drew told her. "Because all of the bad times we go through make us appreciate the good ones even more"
