Arianna watched quietly as Drew flicked at the snow. She felt awkward here, knowing something was wrong, but unable to get Drew to talk. She should try at least, right?
"Drew," she slowly reached a hand out and placed it over his. There was another long pause as she tried to figure out what to say. The only thing that would come out, though, was a question. "Why won't you talk to me?"

The flicking of the snow stopped when her hand covered his, but still, he didn't look up at her. "What do you want me to say? There's nothing to talk about," he answered, sniffing again.

"So everything's okay?" she asked again, doubting ever word of it. "I didn't do anything wrong, did I? Everything...everything's still good with you and Alhana, right? Whatever it is...."

Drew sniffed again, nodding without speaking his answer at first, but finally finding a small voice. "Last time she wrote me, she sounded okay," he said, swiping at his eyes. It must have been the cold air stinging them and making them water.

"That's good," Arianna gave a small nod. She squeezed his hand slightly. "When is she coming back? We'll all have to hang out together sometime."

"You hate hanging out with her," Drew grumbled into his knees. "You always tell me how awkward it is... and complain that she hates you when she doesn't... and get mad at me because you think I pay more attention to her than to you."

Arianna bit her lip. He was right, mostly. Some of what he said, though, could be debated.
"It is awkward," she admitted, "But I don't hate it. Not when we're actually doing something that I can get involved in instead of standing by wondering if anyone remembers I'm there."

Drew frowned into his knees at her answer, tugging his hat down lower over his ears so that it slipped down over his eyes as well. "You always complain about it..." he grumbled, mostly to himself.

"I know," Arianna closed her eyes and sighed. "And I'm really sorry. I...I've just become so insecure with myself that I sometimes feel like I need more attention than what I'm getting. I hate it just as much as you do. I'm really sorry."

His head sunk deeper into his lap until his arms were covering it, and he couldn't help but think about how happy Ari would be when she found out Alhana wasn't coming back this term. That thought, combined with the knowledge that his mom would be celebrating as well, made him more miserable and a string of sniffs and hiccups issued from the little cocoon he had made of himself.

Arianna bit her lip harder untill she was close to breaking the skin. She hated seeing Drew like this and was certain she had just made everything worse. At that moment, she decided it might be best not to say anything further and, instead, placed her arm over Drew's shoulder. With his legs in the way, she couldn't give him a decent hug, nor was she sure he would want one now.

While part of him was upset at Ari at the moment for hating Alhana, a bigger part of him needed and enjoyed the comfort he felt from having her near. He leaned a bit into her, still hidden away in his own arms.

Arianna wasn't sure how long they were out there for. She was getting cold, but didn't want to head inside until Drew was ready, so she ignored her shivers and pulled Drew a little closer.
"It'll be okay," she whispered, needing to hear the words for herself as much as Drew might.

Drew nodded back, his sniffling subsiding a little. With his head still down, he took another swipe at his nose, but didn't say anything.

"You know?" Arianna asked after another long silence. (She never was good at keeping quiet for very long.) "I finally got my patronus to work. I was practicing, just like you told me to, and remembered how excited I was when I found out I was going to be sister. It's...wow. I don't think any dementors or...or bogarts will bother me now."
