"Thornton," Drew answered with a small smirk. He was used to people getting his name wrong, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it any. "So what kind of name is Dorf anyway?" he asked, probably a little too bluntly. "Sounds like an elf name or something. You don't look part elf." He wasn't even sure that was physically possible, but you never knew...

Dorf laughed. "Mum called my Dorothy, and Uncle Henry never like the name much, so he called me Dorf, used to be Dor, so I'm grateful it's as strange as it is now!" She swan slowly closer as she spoke. Then she cupped her hands together and squarted water at Drew in a nice arc. She giggled.

"Dorothy's not so bad. It's better than Dorf and definitely better than Dor for sure," Drew told her, though he had to admit she didn't really match any of the names much. The name Dorothy brought up images of shy, quite girls in gingham and pigtails. This girl didn't strike him like that. Dor and Dorf on the other hand made him think of dull, piggish creatures. Again, hardly aplicable. "Maybe you just need a new name all together," he suggested.

"Gone through a few of those too! Dork, Daffy, Digger! If you can find my a nice one then please let me know!" She smiled at Drew, that came out a little harsher then intended, she thought. No name seemed to suit her. She had not really thought hard about it but she knew that she didn't really 'go' with any name she could think of.

"How about Doxy," Drew suggested, floating on his back and waving his arms and legs lazily throught the water. "Cute little fairy, but with a nasty bite if you get on her bad side, right?"

"Bad side?" she repeated, questioningly. After thinking for a moment, she added, "Doxy? I dunno, it's a little more playful then I am!" She spun around in the water and faced Drew once more. "How's ... no, I don't know?"

"What, you don't have a bad side?" Drew asked, raising an eyebrow at her. It was his experience that just about everyone had a bad side... which was actually a good thing if you think about it. "There's nothing that would get you mad enough to fight over?"

"Well," Dorf mumbled, shocked at this drastic change of topic, "it's not that I don't have one, it's just that I've never thought about it! And what's more, I'm a girl, I don't need to fight to get what I want. Besides I'm also an only child, so I always get what I want." She realized that she sounded extremely childish. "But it's not like I'm spoiled or anything! The things that I really want I will never have!"

Drew had to laugh at her response. For someone who claimed not to be spoiled, it sure sounded that way.
But she had missed his point. "I'm not talking about stuff you want, or even need. I'm talking about stuff you believe in. Convictions, beliefs, truths to be self evident. Anything worth giving someone a really good Doxy bite over?"

Dorf thought about what Drew had asked. "Well, no that you put it like that my mind goes blank. I suppose when push comes to shove I will- would fight for what I believe in and what I believe is right." Dorf was getting irritated by all this soul searching so she swan to the shore and crawled out. She lay on the sand and faced the sun, eyes closed. "Doxy," she mumbled to herself, "I actually do like it."

When she got out, Drew moved closer to the shore but didn't get out himself. He wasnt even close to getting wrinkly yet. "Like what?" he asked her, pushing the point. He wanted to know what made her tick. His whole point had been that everyone had something they believed in. He wanted details.

Dorf didn't really know how to respond. She propped herself up on her elbows and looked indignantly at Drew. "Ag, I don't know!" she protested, "like standing up for your friends even though they may be wrong because they're your friend faults and all. Like not giving into to peer pressure because you are to weak to stand up to those who would dare call themselves friend. Like loving people from who they are not for their blood heritage or their money or because they are more popular then you. Like always telling the truth and not hiding behind someone else's skirt."
Dorf jumped up and ran to the towels that were lying a few feet away. She began to dry her body and continued to speak, "like looking a person in the eye and telling them they are making a fool of himself and realizing when you are doing the same. Ag!" she cried in exasperation, "like you are doing right now Dodder!" She threw the towel onto the ground and walked quickly to her cloths. Dorf pulled on her pants and zipped them up. She picked up her shirt and pulled it over her head. She pulled on her shoes and grabbed her yellow hoody.
She stalked back to Drew and bowed low. "Thank you, Drew Thornton, for the invigorating swim. Now if you don't mind-" she pulled her hoody on with a huff "-I have socks to sort." She hastily turned and walked away not wanting to show her tears.

Drew sat up and just looked at her as she went off on him. She was mad, that was for sure... but he didn't have the slightest clue as to why. As she finished getting dressed and started to stomp off, Drew jumped up and ran to the shore, putting his hand out to stop her. "Woah... hold on... what did I do?" He had been having a nice swim, trying to get to know a new person and suddenly she's angry at him.

Dorf spun around. "You want to know what you did," she said, poking a finger into his chest. "You-" she stopped. She turned away from him and looked out over the lake. She pulled her sleeve over her hand and wiped her cheeks with a sniff. She took a deep breath then let it out. She turned back to Drew with a deep frown in her brow. "You put me on the spot. I didn't like it. I don't like. So I do what I always do: run."

"I... I was just asking..." Drew answered, totally flabergasted at her reaction. He stood there in front of her, in his underwear, dripping wet, and not sure how to make it all right. "I... I just wanted to know. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you mad... really."
