Alexis had been sitting there staring out into space really. Sometimes she got that glassy look in her eye and before she knew it several minutes had passed by without her even knowing it. That was the case now simply because her mind had been working so furiously lately that sometimes she just needed some time for it to regroup as they say. It wasn't until the professor spoke that she snapped out of it. Shaking her head slightly sending her light brown hair cascading around her face. She blinked several times to bring her eyes back into focus while she looked up. He was about to start the lesson but for some reason before that he made mention of Drew throwing something. Angel made a shocked face because that didn't sound like Drew at all, yet her was the teacher so...Angel figured it didn't really matter did it she hadn't been paying any attention so she had no idea what did or didn't happen. No she figured that she'd better concern herself with the lesson.
He asked them a question, this time Angel didn't feel much like answering probably due to the fact that her brain seemed to have stop working and she couldn't have given the answer even if she wanted to. Shrugging she opened her note pad and waited for someone else to answer perhaps they'd know then she could write it down so maybe next time it would slip her mind so easily.

Layla had found the pencil she had been searching for and pulled it out to write something vaguely rude as retaliation for Drew's attack. She had sent him a meaningful glare that meant 'war', but was disappointed when the Professor had started the class with a blatant warning to Drew. Her eyes widening a bit, she quickly crumpled the parchment again and jammed it in her pocket before he looked at her.
She quickly searched for her quill, listening to the introduction as she set herself up to take classes. She took her time, producing slow and even handwriting to date her parchment. She pretended to look busier and managed to avoid eye contact since she had yet to build up the courage to speak up in class.

No one was answering, most likely because the question was vague and subject to interpretation. Technically, Drew's first thought, his smart-ass answer of "magic" would be correct. It was the energy force that they called magic which "allowed" them to do all spells, including conjouring. Aside from genetics, there really wasn't anything else that gave them the ability.
But the question might also be interpreted as asking for the rules that came with conjouring. Of course, those kinds of rules weren't of the legislative kind and didn't really give a wizard permission. They were more like truths that were known and could not be contradicted, much like the Laws of Gravity. They didn't allow anything. They just were.
"Are you asking about Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration?" the Ravenclaw asked, still not sure what the guy wanted. Of course asking what allowed them to do magic was a question for the firsties. Gamp's Law was higher level stuff. "Because if so, it basically tells us what is and isn't possible to conjure out of thin air. Most things are conjurable if you have the skill, but there are five exceptions: life, love, information, food and money. You can create replicas, or create illusions of things, but none of it would be real."

Sitting near the back of the class, Lucas was starting to fall asleep. His chin rested in one hand and the other twirled his wand around in his fingers. He thought it might be funny if he accidentally shot a spell out at someone, but the Ravenclaw knew he's have to pay for it. Especially if he hurt someone. Trying to pay attention, Lucas put his wand down and began doodling on his desk, coming up with a man in a top hat, walking a duck. Wow. He was bored.
