Beau supposed that there was a lot of truth behind Maya's words and the inference he had made from them. People could be like birds... some of them could be free, and others could be caged, hindered by their lives. A light playful smile toyed at the boy's lips as he thought all of this over. He usually wouldn't give too much thought to birds, sure they provided song and entertainment for them, but they weren't a large part of his day. He was surprised to be giving them so much thought on such a beautiful early morning. He didn't mind thinking about it, though, he had good reason to. Beau's greenish colored eyes caught on to Maya's reddish brown eyes and he looked away, not wanting her to think he was staring. That would have been awkward...
' Well they certainly have more freedom then I do. I wish I could fly. ' He took on a more quizzical look, wondering what she meant by that. " But... you can... I mean... the only thing to get used to is the being so high up in the air without something to catch you if you fall... " Just as he said it he began to wonder if that was why Maya hadn't been so keen on looking over the edge. Plus the whole falling over thing...
The Hufflepuff boy didn't know if it was okay to ask, but he figured he might as well. " Maya... are you... afraid of heights? "

Maya felt her breath catch in her throat as Beau attempted to work out her odd statement in confused fragments. He was getting warmer, she could tell. Her heart started to pound in her chest, and she struggled to swallow because her mouth was so dry. She glanced over to meet his gaze for half a second, but she could see the realization on his face. Her face was flushed with humiliation, and to her horror Maya felt angry tears sting her eyes as she glared out at the treetops of the Forbidden Forest. Maya loathed the fact that she cried when she was angry, and the one thing that made her the most angry was her fear.
Maya inhaled a big shuddering breath of cool morning air calming herself. Until she let go and let her tightened muscles relax Maya didn't even notice that she was gripping the ledge with white knuckled fingers. She let her breath go in a whoosh as Beau spoke her secret out loud. No, Maya thought fiercely to herself, not a secret. It was true that Maya had never gone out of her way to keep her terror unknown, but that didn't mean she went around broadcasting it to everyone she met. But now it wasn't even an unintentional secret because Beau knew.
Slowly Maya nodded once and a half whispered, husky "Yes," escaped her lips. Her head was down, focused on hands and her hair and once again fallen over her eyes. This suited her just fine though because it allowed her to peak up from behind her bangs to see his reaction. She wanted to know if he thought her fear was silly, or ridiculous.

Beau floundered a bit as he realized that he had made the air between them grow slightly uncomfortable for Maya, which in turn made it rather awkward for him as he tried to recover from what he had just said. " No, it's.. I mean... " True to his shy form he receded slightly into his own ' shell, ' feeling embarrassed to have brought up a matter that appeared to be touchy for his companion.
A small ' yes ' reached his ears and he dropped his head down against his chest, looking to the ground below them. He could understand why she would be afraid of heights. It was a long way down... He felt a little dizzy looking down, so he turned his head and looked to the girl standing next to him. " I'm sorry. But I can understand why... it's intimidating. " His voice was softer, attempting to console her if he could at all. " If you want, though, I could... maybe take you flying some time. Nothing too high, sure, just... to make it easier or something. " He was rambling, but if she wanted to, the offer still stood. The boy bit down lightly on the inside of his lip, telling himself to just be quiet. He had done enough damage already.

Maya's eyes softened as she watched him scramble for words to comfort her. He seemed sincere enough, and this only made Maya warm more to her new friend. At least he wasn't making fun of her. She had a feeling she might have punched him if he had, and then she knew she would have felt bad for it later. Maya hated violence in any shape or form but sometimes her temper got the better of her. One of her cousins back in Mexico had once taunted her because of her fear, saying that she was acting like a girl. At the age of eight, this was one of the worst insults that could be directed her way, and she had punched him then. Her father, although Maya could tell he was amused, made her apolagize, but that was the one time that hitting someone ever made Maya feel better.
Maya grimaced as she ran her fingers through her short auburn locks. "Intimidating...is a good word for it," she said after a short pause. Her gaze shifted to his face and stayed there, her expression slightly startled. His offer had suprised her, and for a few moments she didn't know what to say. Then a slow tentative smile appeared on her lips as she mulled his invitation over, and after a few more moments of thought Maya nodded her eyes bright. "I'd like that and...thanks..." she paused her eyes flicked away then back to his as she searched for words, "you know for being...well for not...laughing." There she said it.

The Hufflepuff boy gingerly bit down on his cheek as he waited for Maya's response... His thoughts were jumbled in a frenzied mess as he worried himself over whether or not he had said the wrong thing.
Beau couldn't really think of anything that he was really afraid of. Sure he was afraid of all the standard things, failure, not making it after Hogwarts was over, but he honestly could not think of a fear similar to Maya's that he could tell her about. It wasn't that he wasn't willing, he just couldn't really recall ever being afraid of something such as that. " Yeah, intimidating... " He smiled tentatively as it seemed that she was pleased with his offer. " You're welcome... for not laughing. And... I think it'd be fun, hanging out and stuff. " He paused before cracking a small joke. " Maybe next time though it doesn't have to be so early in the morning eh? " His small smile broke out into a grin as he looked out towards the sky, shying from her gaze slightly.

Maya was starting to relax, and the warmth of the sun on her golden brown face was greatly welcomed. As Beau talked, Maya slipped her robe off to reveal green sweat pants and a white tank top. Now that the sun was up, Maya could tell that it was going to be a surprisingly warm day for October and Maya was determined to savor every moment of it.
Maya caught a glimps of Beau's grin as his gaze skidded away from hers, and her head tilted back as she laughed out loud, the sound ringing out like bell in quiet morning. She turned her back on the view and leaned against the terrace as she draped her discarded robe over the edge and folded her arms across her chest. "I take it you're not a morning person," she smiled as she spoke, her mahoganey eyes dancing with amusement. "Obviously I am, but I think I can handle putting off my day for you. I think hanging out would be fun too..."
She nervously licked her dry lips as her eyes dropped to the stone ground. She caught sight of the abandoned guitar and quickly gabbed on to the oppertunity to change the subject. She walked over to it, scooped it up, cradeling it gently in her slender arms, and ran her fingertips gently over the strings. She smiled at the sound. "How long have you been playing? You're very good." She glanced up from behind her bangs, wondering if he minded her handling his guitar, and a slightly apoligetic smile played across her lips.

Okay, he could do this. Talking to a girl... a pretty girl... a very pretty girl, he had done it before and he could handle himself this time. Couldn't he? Beau tried to recall the last time he had been this flustered over a girl. Autumn quickly rose to his memory and he reminisced slightly on their falling out over summer. Thoughts of Beau's former relationship quickly scurried off as Maya replied to him once again. " Not so much of a morning person, no. I mean, I'm surprised I'm still standing. " His joke was a little lame, he admitted, but he still thought it was funny. He was, however, glad to hear that she thought hanging out would be fun... That could be a plus of the early morning adventure.
The Hufflepuff lad glanced back over to the girl and noticed that she was no longer in her former spot. He turned and spotted her holding his guitar in her hands. His instinct was to tell her to be gentle with it, but he realized quickly that she wasn't being too harsh with it like some people were when they play guitar. Generally people who were new at the instrument had no idea how to handle it. " I've been playing... for years now. I don't even know. " He shrugged his shoulders with a small smile, sliding his hands into his pockets as he walked over and stood across from her. " Do you play? "

Maya chuckled at his comment, shifting so that she leaned against the wall and raised one small bare foot and pressed it against the cold stone for balance. In her new position it was eaiser to hold the large guitar when it rested gently on thigh. She glanced back up at Beau and smiled, "Well if you're anything like my brothers I'm surprised too. When there isn't work to be done on the ranch they can sleep past noon." While she was talking Maya's gaze had shifted to the instrument in her tiny hands. She shook her head slightly as she wondered how comical she must look because the guitar was far too large for someone of her size.
When she looked back up her heart jumped in her chest because she was now gazing up at Beau who stood only a few feet in front of her. Stop that, Maya scolded her fickle heart and the rythem slowly returned to normal. Oh goodness, Maya thought slightly diesmayed, I'm one of those girls who gets all lightheaded and giggly whenever a goodlooking guy looks their way. I used to make fun of those girls... Maya swallowed, and hid her eyes behind her bangs once more as she tried to register what Beau was saying. She peeked up at him through her dark, thick lashes and thought, Well maybe just one very goodlooking guy...
Maya nodded as she listened to him reply. It made sense that he would be so good at his chosen intrament if he had been playing for such a long time. When he inquiered about her musical skills however, Maya quickly shook her head, a slightly whistful smile toughing her lips. "I wish," she said, "one of my brothers plays and he tried to teach me, but my fingers were just too small so I couldn't get any of the cords." Maya smiled as she remembered her older brother, "The problem was that he would try to sing as he played and...well he couldn't. He just sounded like one of our bulls in mating season, so that's when I started singing just to shut him up." The smile that her lips now helt was a fond one because she loved and missed her brother.
She sighed and looked up again, pushing memories to the back of her mind. "Singing is just about the only musical ability I posses. No one tells me to shut up, so I figure that either they're just being polite or I'm actually kinda good." With one more soft strum, Maya helt out the guitar to Beau.
