"Would've been more sporting," he quipped back hautily. "Tell me, is everyone here always so well-behaved. Are there thumbscrews in the dungeon, willowroot in the water? Don't keep a civil tongue on my account," he coaxed a bit hotly. "You and the rest of the staff have brainscourgified the whole lot."
"And I'm not quick to annoy, Professor Gallaudet," he said taking up his quil. "I'm just a bit short on tolerance for boredom. I like stimulation," he added with a cheeky smile.

Not quick to annoy, hmm? Well, he could have fooled her for sure. Though she decided not to address it, her goal was not to annoy the man in return, after all. Though the Professor Gallaudet irked her, forgetting completely that she had introduced her herself by her married name rather than her maiden. She did not think she looked like her husband.
"Mrs. Gallaudet," she corrected, "and I believe they, quite sadly, only banned the thumbscrews about 50 years ago."
It was very close to a joke that, but rather out of spite, sarcasm, or actual humor was difficult to determine from the blankness of her expression. Maybe a bit of each.
