She looked at the basket as if he had offered her a runespoor. Okay, so he had expected the refusal of the loan, and even understood that, but the basket was just a basket. He just didn't get people who had a problem with accepting even the smallest of helping hands.
"I promise it won't bite," he teased with a small smile. "I can't say the same thing about those cockroach clusters though. I know a guy who swears he once ate one that was still moving."

Gail smiled when Drew said the basket would not bite, as she took it from his hand. Her mum said the same thing when her childhood friends had been shy. It had always been effective then, and it seemed no less so now. "When it comes to magic, though, you never know. It could." Her mum had taken to commenting on magic like that, once she received her letter.
She laughed out loud at the comment on the moving Clusters. Placing them deliberately in the basket, along with the rest of the candy, she replied, "Well, I'll just have to warn him once I tell him what it is. Seriously, it will be worth it. He'll find the Monty Python reference and laugh so hard he'll cry." He would too; Gail could see it now.
She sized up the bundle of Sugar Quills she had just picked up, wondering if it would work. A bag of Bertie Bott's on a nearby shelf caught her eye. Glancing back down, she did some math and realized how much she already held in the basket. Eli would probably like a bag, but they would have to come another time. Maybe at Christmas. If she stayed in the store, though, she would end up with everything she could find.
Her eyes still wandering to the bag, she said, "Maybe I should go ring this up. If I don't, I'll end up getting something else. I think I'm over my budget as it is."

"Good point," Drew answered adding his own laugh. Of course, he didn't know many vedors who would allow their shopping aids to eat the customers. The merchandise, possibly, but not the baskets.
"You're nicer than I am," Drew told her as she placed the clusters with her other purchases. "I think I'd tell whoever it is after they eat it. I bet that would be a pretty cool reaction to see."
Drew figured he had enough fo the moment as well. The good thing about the sweet shop was it was always there. Plus, he had ordered by owl on more than one occasion. You never knew what shape the stuff would be in, but when he was at Hogwarts and had an emergency, it sure came in handy.

Gail was pleased to see Drew was not staying behind. She liked talking with him, but she was not willing to remain in among the candy and convince herself she could afford another. For herself, she would not indulge, even if it was a muggle sweet shop. She knew her limit and was content to stop at that. But when it came to others, particularly when giving gifts, she had so few people she trusted closely enough, and she always wanted to give them more than she could afford. It had happened more than once.
However, when Drew's last statement sank in, she raised a brow at him. He surely had her confused with someone else. "You give me too much credit," she said. "I'm going to let him take a big bite before I warn him. He does things like that to me all the time, and this is payback. Even if it is his birthday." She smiled evilly. "Besides, warning him takes all the fun out of it, innit?"

Drew laughed, realizing he had misunderstood her. When she had mentioned a warning, he had thought it was before the bite, not after. He wasn't too sure his mistake had been giving her too much credit though. Gail was pretty nice and the fact that she had such a sneaky side was a bit of a surprise. Not a bad thing, but still unexpected.
"But Acid Pops are too much?" he teased, thinking that could be pretty funny too, giving and unsuspecting sugar addict a hole through their tongue.
