Josh really wished his skin wasn't so pale. The pink of his cheeks showed even more on him than on most people, which made him stick out more. He blushed too easily and really wished he didn't. He smiled at her again when she nodded to the seat next to her and the boy made his way over. He sat down next to her, putting his feet up on the chair and resting his elbows on his knees. "Yeah, Hufflepuff is the best house," he grinned.
Looking at the bottle in her hand, Josh had to shake his head no. He hadn't tried the drink before, but it did look good. "I haven't tried it," he confessed, wondering if that was going to make him seem like a freak. Josh turned to look for one of the elves to ask for one, and it was then that the little elf came over with the sandwich he'd asked for when he first came into the kitchen. "Oh, thank you very much," Josh said to the little elf that blushed like he did, "Could I maybe get a butterbeer too?" "Oh yes sir," the elf answered, "Right away sir." With that, it scampered off to get him a drink. Looking from his sandwich to Matty, the teenager picked up half the sandwich and held it out.
"Do you want half?" he offered, "It's a BLT."

Matty was glad he joined her. She would have felt pretty rejected if he had of just shaken his head, and stood there. Not that she assumed Josh was like that, but, you never known. The ways some guys acted, were as if girls had cooties. Although... they were mostly the younger, immature ones. When he agreed with her, Matty chuckled lightly. She recalled the conversation Conner, a Slytherin friend, and herself had had when watching the sun rise once. They had merged two houses, to Gryffinpuff and Slytherclaw. She didn't speak of it, however, for it was probably one of those 'you had to be there' moments.
When Josh admitted that he hadn't tried it, the girl simply continued to smile. "Ah, well, you're missing out." Matty said playfully. Betterbeer seemed to make everything inside you warm up, it was a really good remedy. She watched as a little elf came over and gave the boy his sandwich, and brought him a drink as well. "They're so adorable..." she muttered to herself, watching the creature toddle off and start preparing more food. 'Do you want half?' Matty turned and looked at the sandwich half. 'It's a BLT.' She shot him a shifty glance. "As long as it's not poisoned," Matty said, however obviously kidding. Why would he poison a sandwich he was going to eat too? The girl gently took the half from his hand, while adding "Thaaank you." before taking a small bite. Ah, even elf-made sandwiches were awesome.

Josh chuckled softly as Matty joked about the sandwich before taking it and having a bite. He took a bite as well, only realizing when he was chewing that he had actually been quite hungry. Josh "mmm"-ed softly as he swallowed his mouthful of sandwich and chuckle, glancing sideways at Matty who seemed to be enjoying her half of it too. She looked cute, nibbling on her sandwich like that. As that thought passed through his mind, Josh felt his cheeks, once again, turn pink.
"Drink for the sir," came a tiny voice. Josh turned his attention to where the sound had come from and he smiled down at the little elf. "Thanks," he told the elf, taking the bottle of butterbeer out of it's hand. He felt kind of bad that the elves were just doing everything for them and he had nothing to give in thanks. But the elf looked happy to be doing things for them and Josh didn't really understand. When the elf had scurried off again, the Hufflepuff boy looked at his housemate.
"Do they really enjoy doing all this work for us?" he asked her with concern.

Matty quite enjoyed the sandwich. She could tell that Josh, for he was chuckling and 'mm'ing away. The girl, once she had finished her mouthful, giggled again, letting her head drop back slightly. She was rather enjoying hanging out with Josh, too. He seemed like a pretty fresh guy. And he was good looking, too, which only added to the pluses he had so far. The girl took another few bites, before washing down the food with some of her own drink. When Matty heard the little voice of the elf again, she smiled down at it. Once Josh had accepted the drink, she caught the concerned look on his face, which was only followed by a question in the same matter.
"As far as I know, they do. I think it's because most of the people at Hogwarts are nicer than the families they served, before they came here. They're really sweet in that way," she said softly, still looking at Josh, a small smile on her face. "Besides, they like to be useful, it gives them a purpose." Matty added. She then let go of the sandwich with one hand, resting her hand with the sandwich on her thigh. "Do you come from a magical family?" she asked, oblivious to what his answer may or may not be. Matty wasn't one to judge on bloodline or anything like that, although she was aware that some people got sore about the subject.

It made Josh feel a little better about the elf situation when Matty added that they liked to help and it gave them a purpose. However, he made a mental note for the future; he wouldn't ask too much of them. He wasn't used to being waited on anyways, so it wouldn't make much of a different to Josh.
A light grin had been playing on Josh's lips while he sat there with Matty. That was, until she asked about his family. His eyes lowered slightly to the half a sandwich in his hands and a soft sigh escaped his lips. "Umm," he stuttered, "No. My...my family isn't...isn't magical." Way to make it obvious, you knucklehead, Josh scolded himself, wishing he wasn't such a knob. "Do you?" he asked quickly, hoping to steer the topic in her direction.

The girl listened carefully to what Josh was saying about his family. Unfortunately, she only knew too well that he was hiding something, but what, Matty wasn't sure of. The teenager had gone through the same sort of thing when she first came to Hogwarts, and people asked about her mum or parents. Tripping over words, blushing, breaking eye contact, speaking softly, fidgeting and shifting conversation were all signs that there was something deeper than what the Hufflepuff had said. Matty just knew it. She put down her half of the sandwich on the plate, turning her gaze to wards the older boy.
"Not really. My dad's a muggle, and my mum was a witch, but she passed away when I was little." the girl admitted, simply letting lip one of the biggest things in her life. However, Matty knew by now that it was easier to get that out in the beginning of a friendship, for it prevented the chance of awkwardness or offense a bit more. The girl could see that Josh still seemed unsettled, and her next action was purely in comfort, and not really though out. The girl reached up and put her hand on his shoulder, leaning her head down so she could see his face better. "Josh... whats up?" Matty asked softly, her voice ringing with concern.

"Oh..." Josh said, a little taken aback by the way she'd just told him that her mum had died when she was little, "I'm sorry." He could tell his eyes were betraying him, showing the concern he was feeling but not wanting to show. Josh knew that sympathy over a loved one often made it worse and he really didn't want to make Matty feel bad. He turned his eyes away from her again, focusing his gaze of the elves that were busily running around the kitchens, doing their job.
Josh felt his entire body go rigid when Matty reached over and touched his shoulder. It wasn't that he didn't like her touching him, it just caught him off guard. Slowly, Josh's eyes turned toward her before the rest of his head followed. He flashed her a light smile, shaking his head. "It's nothing," he told her as truthfully as he could, picking up on her tone of concern, "Really. Don't worry about it."

Matty shook her head slightly when Josh appologised. "Don't worry. I'm okay about it now, I guess. For me it's just easier if I get it out in the open earlier, then theres no room for regret or hesitation later on. I mean, it's not as if I can change whats happened by not talking about it. It's just life, we have to take it and deal with it as it's thrown at us. Life would be so much different with her around, and I guess I'm allot stronger because of it. It's not the same, of course, but I think I coped alright as time went on," the girl paused for a moment, her gaze glued to the ground. "I miss her. But it's been over seven years now, and the wound has healed allot. I've even got a new step mum and step brother, which helps in some ways. And dad's always been there and- I'm going to stop rambling now." Matty said with a small nervous chuckle. Hopefully Josh wouldn't think she was an emotionless freak for blurting out all that.
"It's nothing," the girl gave a small nod. "Really. Don't worry about it." The teenager left her hand on his shoulder for a moment more, before letting it drop beside her again. She gave him a small smile. "Okay then, it's cool." Matty said softly. She racked her brains for a new topic to shift off the uncomfortable air. "So what else do you like doing, Josh? Besides helping random girls with their charms and spells?" the girl asked, a joking tone playing in her voice. She was genuinely interested in his other hobbies, despite the fact that she wasn't serious about the whole 'helping girls with spells' thing. Matty found her green eyes wandering back up to Josh's, a smile still remaining on her face.
