Unlike the previous year, this lesson was in fact to be overseen by the actual Tamis Raynor-Gallaudet... and not a student impersonation in her body. Much to the relief of Raynor herself.
The room was dark; boarding on pitch black. The tall windows that ran down the far left wall that usually let in the afternoon light at its best were shuttered. The curtains that up until now had seemed only to be decoration were pulled lightly over them, blocking even the smallest of rays. Every chandler and torch had been extinguished; replaced by sporadically placed candles floating in just the right places to provide enough light to keep it from being impossible to see, but not enough to really see properly.
If one could survive navigating the rows and columns of desks that awaited the unsuspecting student they would find the Deputy seating quite comfortably behind her desk at their forefront. One might think that she had booty-trapped the room in this manner out of sheer amused spite. Well, while that might be one reason there was still another. And that reason was sitting on top of the desk in front of her.
It was a large tank, large enough to be luxurious to even the most spoiled fat iguana. Inside something very dark slithered around its surface, gliding across the inside of the tank with ease. Once one's eyes adjusted one could even call it... cloak like... in appearances.

Pat walked down the second-floor corridor, toward the DADA classroom. The silver-haired prefect hoped that they would be working on something different then Patronuses for this class, the first after Winter Break. Although the practice with Patronuses had had its virtues (everyone's Patronuses were getting better, even if only by the smallest of margins), they were getting monotonous. Hopefully, they would have something interesting to be working on once class started... although it seemed the fun would start beforehand.
As he became level with the door to the classroom, it was quickly apparent that something interesting would be happening this period. The class was very dark, nearly too dark to see your nose in front of your face, even with the random floating candles littered around.
Pat entered the room, cautiously at first, wondering what he should do. He was swiftly engulfed in the darkness, unable to see too much, other than the candles themselves; they did little to actually illuminate the room. He attempted to move toward where he remembered the teacher's desk was placed, as he could see a shadowed figure over there, presumably Raynor. If he had thought about it properly, Pat would have thought to light his wand before trying to traverse the room.
However, he did no such thing, and itended up costing him within five seconds of entering. "Ouch! Damn it..." That was Pat's exclamation after stubbing his toe on a desk. He had momentarily forgotten about the Professor not to far from him; however, it seemed the pain had awakened his head to the virtues of lighting your wand when you can't see.
"Lumos," Pat said after grabbing his wand and pulling it out of his robes. the light wasn't good enough to brighten up the entire room, but at least he could see a couple feet in front of him. "Heh, sorry Professor..." Pat said, a little embarassed about hitting his foot. Was that why she had darkened the room, to see if their instincts with their wands were good enough? Although, he now noticed a tank set upon the desk at the head of the class. Maybe whatever lived in it liked the darkness?

Jack made his way up to the DADA corridor and saw Pat entering the classroom. Coming upon the class he noticed that the classroom was pitch black. Thinking that they were dealing with some kind of creature that liked the dark he assumed that the class would be free of obstacles and entered with out care. Hearing Pats expression of pain Jack thought that he might want to take it more slowly, but just as the thought crossed his mind he hit a desk with quite a bit of force that it flipped him over onto the floor. His spill had caused quite the racket, not to mention there was a pain throbbing through it right arm. Groaning a bit he tried to get to his feet just as he saw Pat light his wand. “Now there’s an idea,” he said thickly, slowly getting to his feet.
When he managed to regain himself he took out his wand muttering Lumos. His wand lit immediately and Jack saw what had caused his fall. “Damn desk,” he muttered looking down at the object. Then looking around he saw that He and Pat weren’t alone. It appeared that Raynor was also in the room. Crap, I must look like quite the fool, he thought as he muttered a quick hello to both of them.

A crash behind him made Pat jump into the air. How high was open to debate; he couldn't tell, even with his wandlight, the room was still too dim to make out too many details, especially when a loud noise has just scared you out of your socks. Pat landed quickly enough in any case, although his heart was still pounding a mile a minute.
Looking for the source of the crash, his ears caught wind before his eyes; he could tell it was Jack by his voice, way before he spotted him. Pat's eyes weren't adjusted at all to the room still; it was by Jack's own wandlight that the Huffle prefect pinpointed where he was. Pat moved slowly over to the Ravenclaw, holding his wand on one hand, feeling around the desks with the other. "You alright, dude?" Pat asked.

“Ya I am alright,” Jack said seriously putting his arm into his wand light to see if he was bleeding. Then continuing in a more sarcastic tone he said patting the desk, “lucky for me the desk broke my fall.” Ok the desk hadn’t been the one that actually broke his fall that had been the hard floor, but the desk had been the one to cause it so it still worked in his mind.
“I just don’t get why there are desks in the middle of a pitch dark classroom,” Jack said staring darkly down at the desk, “where us students have the miss fortune of running into one.” He knew that the smart thing to do would have been to light his wand before he entered, but he felt better now blaming it on the desk and darkness even though it was probably a given that there were usually desks in a class room.

Verina hadn't even noticed that their classroom appeared darker from just outside which wasn't too surprising since her thoughts had been elsewhere. Stepping into the classroom without a care in the world she suddenly found herself blinded. She got a little nervous at first until she thought she could make out voices and faint lights but her eyesight was still unfocused.
"Is that you Jack... and Pat?" she asked since she thought those where the voices she recognized. She continued to blink her eyes before reaching into one of her pockets for her wand, "Lumos," she said as she lifted her wand slightly in an attempt to make sense of things as she took a step forward only to ram into a desk. Thinking it better to wait till she could actually see she stopped moving.

Well, she did give the fourth years credit. They were both smarter and more ignorant than the years previous. They at least thought to use their wands, but that was creating a major problem. One alone was like the buzz of a fly; annoying but harmless. Three? They had managed to light up one whole side of the room.
Casting a glance at the creature in the tank, she saw his movements begin to slow, he cringed at the sudden light and slunk around his cage to try and find a place to hide. Hissing through her teeth, Raynor quickly threw the black cloth she used to transport him here over the tank. That could ruin the entire lesson.
Peering at the students, Pat and Jack seemed to be nursing bruises, but nothing major. Very good.
"I am very glad all of you are wand savvy enough to have the brains to use them in a situation like this. However, the room is dark for a reason. Lights out if you will and find your seats carefully." She clucked her tongue. "It is the same set up as always, you should be able to navigate it."
Well, same set up whenever there were desks. Her eyes had long adjusted to the dark conditions, she had to squint to see the trio. From such a point of view as theirs it might have looked like a glare, but an unattended one.

Ash hurried into the DADA classroom. It wasn't that she was afraid of being late- nor that she was chasing her rat, Pocko into the room, it was more like something was chasing her. To be more specific, Mrs. Norris was his name. Yes, it was a he. She had just found out a few minutes ago and was absolutely horrified. For four years she had insisted on calling the wretched cat a 'she' until she had unpleasantly found out that it was really a 'he' that was assisting the care taker.
She hated cats, and even without the knowledge of Mrs. Norris actually being a Mr. Norris, she would have ran. Unfortunately, it was dark and Ash didn't know that so she rammed right into something hard but wasn't sure what it was. The fourth year brushed herself off and stood up, looking around herself. She thought that she had seen a flash of red hair- Lauren!
"Lauren...Lauren? Lauren?" she called blindly, her hands searching around wildly until they finally landed on something soft... and warm, and squishy. Oh my God... it was someone's face.

Jack listened as someone else came into the classroom and was smart enough to lite their wand right away. "Ya it's Jack and Pat." he said recognizing Verina's voice and still nursing his arm. He was a little startled when Raynor spoke from one of the dark corners, even though he knew she was there he hadn't expected her to address them.
He immediately put out his wand, but he wasn't sure that he had remembered the set up of the desks in this room and started to move towards where he thought his normal seat was, when someone else entered the room and fell. He had heard the all to familiar crash and wondered briefly who it was until the said person mistaken him for someone named Lauren. "No not Lauren. Jack." he said with a laugh removing her hands from his face and taking the nearest seat. He had given up on trying to find his normal seat and just sat in the one next to him.

If the room was any lighter, anyone would be able to notice Ash's face glowing a bright reddish color. She held her breath for a few seconds, her hands paralyzed in mid air- still in the same position it had been in when Jack had removed them from his face. Aih-I- Daanaa! ((its a weird thing Ash says when she's embarrassed... x.X- it doesn't mean anything))
She swallowed and slowly sat down on the floor beneath her, not trusting herself to move around anymore.

Verina wasn't sure what to do but knowing that Pat and Jack we're both there made her feel better, "Hi guys," she said though she doubted very much they could hear her. Her head spun around in the direction of their professor's voice and in response to her words she quickly turned off her wand.
Now what was she going to do in the complete dark as it is she could barely navigate herself around things when it was light. She turned where she stood as she heard a crash come from somewhere and was relieved to hear both Ash's and Jack's voices. Now she just had to find her seat oh that wasn't asking too much.
She began to walk along the desks trying to feel her way across the room. Not being able to feel a desk she thought it was an empty aisle only to have herself knock into a desk and almost knock it over until she managed to blindly catch it. Thinking it best not to try moving any farther she sat in the seat of the desk she'd righted. Verina dropped her head down onto the desk and her forehead made a slight thump as she did.

Pat had only nodded in agreement to Jack's original comment. It did seem somewhat stupid for Raynor to keep desks around in the middle of a pitch-black (or nearly) room. Although, everyone did make mistakes.
However, it appeared from Raynor's words after Verina arrived that Raynor had the room set up exactly as she intended: darkness, desks and all. At her prompting, Pat muttered "Nox", extinguishing his wandlight. But not before he took care to see the path to a free desk and set it to his mind. That way, when he relinquished his source of light, he was able to find the seat easily.
The exclamations and calling from behind him made Pat jump slightly, but he could tell quickly enough that it was only Ash showing up that had caused the commotion. He would have to ask later what exactly that commotions was; he couldn't see for himself at the moment, and now wasn't the time to ask.
For now, Pat's attention was focused back on the tank, now covered by that cloth. What was in there...? What so needed the darkness, and so despised light...?

It was so dark in here... She wondered what Raynor had in store for them today. Last time hadn't really been too exciting although she did get to improving her Patronus quite a bit. The fourth year had managed to produce two larger wisps of smoke which was pretty impressive to her although she knew that she still needed to work. She was determined to find out what her animal was. Hopefully it wasn't something stupid...
Ash coughed, noticing the room was really silent. It was too silent to the point she felt a little more awkward than usual. She nodded her head slightly, " So erm... how was... breakfast?" she asked the people around her.

Anna ran into the classroom right behind Ash, hoping she wasn't too late for class. Once inside, she almost thought she had entered the wrong room since it was dark. This really stunk, Anna's vision in the dark was not very good and easily crashed into things. Especially if she woke up in the middle of the night in the Gryffindor dorms. Putting her hands out in front, she carefully when forward to find an empty seat and sit. It wouldn't be so nice if she actually sat on someone. Kicking something, Anna realized her foot kicked a seat and slowly went in it. Now to find out what they would need such darkness for a class.

((sorry about that loves, would have swore I got this rolling))
There was the initial commotion that always seemed to erupt from the fourth year class whenever this particular lesson was thrown into play. While they did not see an official class set up very often, they at least did see it enough to know the layout. Not too difficult to navigate. Then again, Raynor had been an auror with specialized training on knowing your suroundings... and she had needed training on that.
When everyone finally managed to find a seating arrangement the Deputy peeled the black cloth away from the tank and let our a small breath of relief at seeing the creature inside was still slithering merrily about. So it had not destroyed the lesson, very good.
"All right, settle down now, settle down. Before we go any farther, can anyone whose eyes have adjusted tell me what our guest is? Then perhaps enlighten the class about the current light conditions?" She asked the class, motioning to the tank.
The lighting really was not that bad, once the eyes adjusted it was only slightly difficult
