Charon eyed the mark, not as something to be feared, but as a badge of honor. After a second he tore his eyes away and answered her. "I am not entirely sure. But then, when is anyone entirely sure of what they are getting into? I am sure, though, that I am willing to accept all risks, known and unknown, make all sacirfices, and enjoy all possible rewards. I am also sure that you already knew my answer or you would not have let me get this far." At these words the smallest hint of a smirk began to show, but it disappeared as he muttered under his breath, "I am also sure that I will someday pay for those words."

Emily pursed her lips, eyeing the boy appraisingly. It was as if he'd memorized this little speech of his beforehand. Still, he was adamant about denying his sullied heritage, and eager to join the ranks of the Deva.
"Would you accept being answerable to me? Would you accept that if I deem any of your actions unacceptable, you will be punished? What I say is the law, and you will obey it. I demand complete and utter loyalty. Have you any qualms at all with this? Speak now, for there is no going back once you agree."

Charon was not disturbed in the least by these words, as he said, "There was no going back for me as soon as I walked in that door. I would have to be answerable to someone. Why should it not be you? As for loyalty, my loyalty shall be to the Deva and its ideals. As long as you embody those ideals then my loyalty shall also be to you. I accept all these conditions." After saying this, Charon seemed to remember his coffee and drank it quickly.

Emily calmly sipped her tea for a minute, letting silence fall over the pub. The bartender was no longer even pretending to wipe glasses anymore-- he was openly staring at the pair, and trying to listen to what they were saying. She placed the now empty tea cup on the table, and folded her hands primly on the tabletop. "So you would have no objections to swearing an Unbreakable Vow?"

Charon saw the bartender's interest ands lowered his voice slightly. "I'm not quite sure what that entails, exactly, but from the name I can guess. I'm sure I would have no objections, but I would like to be sure of what it is first. I'm guessing that it's a magical vow that will curse the one who breaks it?"

"It will kill you," Emily replied bluntly. "Break your vow, and you will die slowly, and painfully. And you will have to face our displeasure as well, should you ever go back on your word."
Once again, Emily's eyed flickered to the bartender, and she added: "Do not worry about him. He will be dealt with later."

Charon finally began to wonder what he was getting into, but kept his face impassive. He returned his voice to the level it had been at and replied, "Very well. Lay out the conditions of the vow and tell me what I have to do to swear it."

Emily snapped her fingers sharply. From out of a dark, hidden corner a figure emerged, cloaked in all black. The figure brandished a wand and continued forward, coming to stand directly beside Emily and Charon's table.
"Give me your hand," she demanded, extending her own petite pale one. "If you harbor any doubts, leave now. This is your last chance."

Charon gave the figure a cursory glance then extended his hand saying, "The only doubts I have at this point are about my longevity should I choose to leave."

"One does not simply leave the Deva," Emily said, her voice low and eerie. "We have made a commitment. We will see the dominance of purebloods, and will use all we posess to further our goals, including our lives, if need be."

Charon gave a nervous chuckle, as Emily had misunderstood him "I meant if I choose to leave this conversation. I am more than sure that the punishment for leaving th Deva would have me begging for death. I'm also more than sure that I'm ready to make this commitment."

"Then give me your hand," Emily replied, once again extending her own. The black robed figure advanced, placing his wand on the top of Emily's hand.
"Do you, Charon Holler, devote yourself fully to the Deva and its principles?"

This sounds like one of those traditional wedding ceremonies, thought Charon as he said, "Yes, I do."

A flame erupted from the cloaked figure's wand, wrapping around Emily and Charon's clasped hands. "And will you do everything in your ability to see that these goals are carried out?"

As Alice said, "Curiouser and curiouser" Charon thought. "I will"
