Derrick sat by the window looking out at the pouring rain. He wanted to go dance in it, rolling in the puddles, and return to the room feeling clean maybe even pure. Derrick though knew this wasn't happening for the sole reason that other then the rain nothing was enticing him to leave the room today. It was the weekend and he felt that today should be spent in the room lounging. At most he would leave the Hufflepuff region of the castle for meals if he wasn't in the mood for what was stashed underneath the bed or felt the need for a walk. Stretching his legs wasn't a terrible idea but Derrick at the moment decided against it. Petting Niwa who was curled up on his bed Derrick knew that this wasn't the only reason he was in here today. It was the anniversary and he couldn't deal with it. It was odd how happy he could be about the day at all but the fact that it landed on the weekend meant he wouldn't miss any lessons or have to give some of the people who he had begun to talk to and considered friends the cold shoulder. He didn't like to talk to people on this day but Derrick had a creeping suspicion that he would have to today. He was ready to deal with it now though after all Derrick was older and stronger. Wasn't he? Derrick wouldn't cry but he didn't cry anymore so the thought of this was pointless in all regards. He didn't want a helping hand or someone to try and understand his sadness. What could they or did they know about losing their parents? Especially when it was all his fault and Derrick knew it was. The adults had told him otherwise but it was as if he had ushered them to their deaths. He saw the strain, the look in his mothers eyes that said she wanted just one night alone with her husband, and his fathers eyes that said the same thing. It wasn't that they didn't love Derrick it's just as he knew that he was always there and for the most part didn't want to be separated from his parents. That night though Derrick insisted that they spend the night together that they go out to just be by themselves because they deserved it. They hadn't even got to the destination, they were still on their way when the other car had struck them. Sighing Derrick looked outside again trying not think about it but he couldn't help it. "Has it ever not rained on this day?" The words were uttered quietly because they were meant for him and only him. It was the truth though the day itself had been nothing special up until this point but now that it was and he took notice to it Derrick realized that it rained year after year on this day. Had bad things happened to him on this day before and Derrick just wasn't aware of it? Was this the day his only friend that he had at the age of 5 decided that Derrick was a loser and he didn't want to hang out with him? Was it the same day he had first bleed at age 3 when he took a tumble when running? It was raining those days to, he knew that, but was it this day. It was probably best he didn't go further then the common room because if it was the same day it was cursed and only bad things could come. Derrick heard someone at the door but didn't so much as flinch or move from the window now. If they wanted to acknowledge him they could and Derrick in turn would attempt to be as civil as he could manage. Just because this day had to be troublesome for him didn't mean it had to be for his fellow house members. He wouldn't drag them down with him. [Closed-Josh] [/center]

Josh actually liked the rain. He usually would sit outside in it if it wasn't one of those heavy rains. Today wasn't like a torrential downpour, but he thought maybe it was a little too much for an outside adventure. Dragging himself through the common room, clad in just black jeans and a black, long-sleeved shirt, Josh wondered if any of the millions of book he'd brought with him could occupy him until it was time to eat. By some miraculous bit of luck, Josh had had enough willpower and motivation to finish all his homework before the weekend, so he actually had nothing to do. Reading was almost a final option.
As he climbed the stairs, Josh noticed how dead the house was. He hadn't seen anyone around in a while and he frowned at the thought; he'd been hoping to see Matty for since he'd come back from the holidays. He knew she had a boyfriend, but that didn't stop his stupid emotions from letting him like her. Josh had from the moment they'd met and he really wished he didn't. With a sigh, Josh tried to push the girl from his mind as he walked into the boys' dorm.
"Has it ever not rained on this day?"
Josh heard the soft words just as he entered the room and he saw the boy who must have uttered them. He stopped where he was, finding it odd that there was a boy in the dorm when it wasn't time to sleep. Josh rarely met any other Hufflepuff boys and he almost attempted to strike up a friendly conversation when he noticed the grave look on the boy's face. "Bit of a pathetic fallacy?" he asked quietly, making his way to his own bed, keeping a close eye on the other boy.

Derrick let a small sheepish smile cross his face and allowed himself a small chuckle. It would be the only one that would escape his lips on this day but the boy had earned this much from him. It was somewhat of a welcome therapy also that he should learn to do something other then sulk on this day. Would he ever be able to get to that point though? Derrick sighed and stared out the window looking at the rain fall down on the usually beautiful landscape. It wasn't even warm rain, the kind where the sun still shined, and no matter how cold the rain was you still felt warm all over. That was the kind of rain Derrick could have dealt with. Even heavy cruel pounding rain would suffice but it wasn't it was a cloudy and steady rain. Shaking the thoughts from his head Derrick turned to see who exactly the boy was. Looking him up and down Derrick knew who he was but that wasn't saying much considering Derrick knew everyone in his house and most others but they did not know him. His name if Derrick recalled correctly was Josh York and he was a seventh year. Derrick had he been sociable before would have most likely associated with Josh. They were both quiet, somewhat soft spoken and Derrick always enjoyed someone who didn't thrust themselves into company. Most would consider what Josh had just done as exactly that but Derrick didn't and knew he had spoken. Anyone was open to respond to that Derrick had said it out loud it was open for response if one wished. Turning he looked at Josh and softened his expression to the best of his ability.
"I'd be a much happier person to believe so."
Derrick felt better about his reaction to this after what had happened a few days before with Brenton although that wasn't intentional or maybe it was. He wasn't completely sure about it but he knew that whatever Brenton represented angered him and drove him to act like a fool. It was out of character how he reacted but at this point Derrick was over it and just hoped he wouldn't see the smaller boy around anymore. He bothered him far too much for words to describe. It would be easier he thought to just put the boy and his undeserved need for respect out of his mind altogether. Derrick now though stopped looking outside and turned to face Josh. It was rare to see another Hufflepuff boy, let alone talk to one, because while Derrick slept in the same room as them he was rarely ever here and when he returned from his late night forays with his cat and guitar. Derrick glanced over at Niwa as he realized how little time he really spent in this room, and while a large poster adorned the space above his bed, most people would have assumed that the boy who was here the previous year had simply left it there and no one had bothered to take it down. Shifting his glance to Josh he decided to attempt to be civil and possibly even friendly. After all he knew how to now after his interactions with Maddyson and Claire.
"What brings you up here on this fine er well pleasant day?"
Derrick wasn't sure what to call it. It was the weekend after all so it had to pleasant for those who didn't have something lorded over their head on this day. Standing up he walked over to his bed and went immediately to the bottom of it to bring out Francesca. He needed his comfort bubble and the guitar gave Derrick that. Strumming the chords lightly he sat on the bed and thought about the year overall and Maddyson. The girl mystified him to an extent. He had only talked to her once but it was more then enough to make him curious. The way she carried herself and her carefree attitude was something Derrick sorely wanted in his own life. He admired her quite a bit and really wished nothing more then possible getting to know her better. Sighing heavily Derrick thought about the girl as he strummed his guitar and then looked up at Josh for a brief second.
"You don't mind if I play do you?"
This was Derrick being courteous or at least that was what he would call it. Derrick though wasn't too sure about the whole socialize thing after all it was still quite new to him.

Josh simply nodded at the boy's response to his question. What could he say to that? Josh wasn't one to pry but the answer he'd received made him want to. What was bothering the both? Josh's instinctive reaction to help was slowly taking over, but his common sense kicked in shortly after and he let it slide. He knew he'd hate it if he was in a mood and someone came barging in, demanding to know what was wrong. Instead, Josh kept walking toward his bed and his trunk, opening it to look through the books he'd brought. On top, of course, was Wuthering Heights which he'd read too many times. As he picked up the book, the thing nearly fell apart in his hands. He didn't feel like reading such a depressing book while it was so depressing outside. Something lighter would have to suffice.
However, Josh's attention was drawn back to the other boy when he asked him a question. Josh picked up a different book, one titled Midnight Magic, and showed it to the boy. "This," Josh answered him, showing the cover, "Figured I might as well get some reading done." Just as he was about to sit on his bed, Josh heard the soft strumming of a guitar and his ears perked up. He loved music and loved playing guitar, remembering he had his own under his bed as well. It was strange that these two hadn't met before because Josh often found himself drawn to fellow musicians.
"Not at all," replied the older boy, setting his book down and leaning over the edge of his bed. He pulled his guitar case from it's hiding spot and set it on his bed. With a grin at the boy, Josh took out his guitar and searched for a pick. "Do you mind if I join you?" he asked.

Derrick couldn't help but flash a smile when Josh mentioned the book and the smile grew even wider when the boy unveiled his own guitar. Derrick was now truly amazed that he had not infact talked to the boy much sooner. They seemed so similar although he had never heard of the book that Josh held up. In a what could be called a flash of realization he understood why though. Up until this point he would have not tried to further conversation past his initial response and had the boy said anything further he would have simply ignored it shrugging it off. Derrick owed him no explanation so why would he have continued the conversation. Now though because of her Derrick was talking to people, actually making friends, and not feeling so alone. Derrick shook the thoughts from his head though as if all of it was shed with a flick of his hair. Derrick flashed Josh somewhat of a roguish grin that he could not contain inside himself as he held Francesca tightly.
"Feel free to but just make sure to keep up with me and Francesca."
It wasn't a challenge but a statement that Derrick was issuing. He wasn't about to question the older boy's ability with his six string but one could never be too safe in forewarning others of their own ability. It was the mood Derrick was in that made him want to play something complex. It was the day that he needed to get off his mind and for that reason he would play something that wasn't simple but required a bit of skill. Only a bit seeing as he did not want to lose Josh although from the looks of the boys hands he assumed that he would be fine and needed no real warning from Derrick. Better safe then sorry though Derrick thought as he quickly made sure that Francesca was in tune one last time. He realized then that he had referred to his guitar as Francesca and hoped that Josh didn't think he was too weird because of it. Looking up he grinned again.
"If you know the other guitar part feel free to pick it up if not then just follow me. I hope you don't mind but I like to sing when I play."
Derrick said all of this in a rushed tone and he didn't know quite why but that didn't bother him in the least. If Josh enjoyed how he sang then great but if not then he'd have to deal with it Derrick supposed. There would be no stopping him he enjoyed the music far too much and especially the music of Four Year Strong. Inhaling deeply Derrick began to play hitting the chords of Francesca with grace and ease playing the intro. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath and then went to work.
"Don't make a sound, it's time to throw it into lock down. Watch me knock down this mess that I've gotten myself into for a small commission. I'll show you how. If you just get off the ground. You've got move a little faster to make it out of this disaster before you get factored out. Turn the page, another line I should have saved but who's to say that you wouldn't be blown away, because you've always blown."
Derrick listened to see if Josh was picking it up. If not then he could lead the next song whatever he wanted to play was fine with Derrick but for the meantime they were playing this song and for the life of him Derrick would finish it. Smiling to himself Derrick couldn't help but think that this day wouldn't turn out all that terribly after all.

Josh recognized the song right away and smile at it. It was one of his favourites and he realized that he might actually be able to make good friends with this boy. Picking up the guitar part, Josh continued singing. Normally he didn't sing in front of people, even though he knew he was good, but since the boy had he couldn't really leave hims hanging.
"Anchor come and drag me down Before I take a dive Leave me for dead I've always said You'd find me in over my head Now you can take it literal instead So now I'm bringing it back Anchor drag me down before I take the dive."
Josh strummed along with the boy, finding it oddly calming and natural to be playing and singing with him. His usual shy nature had disappeared momentarily and it was rather relieving. For a brief moment, Josh felt like he actually had a friend. All his life, he'd been the outcast and now here he was, with nearly a total stranger, feeling completely at home. It was incredible what Hogwarts could do.

Derrick almost stopped playing for a moment because he was in fact simply stunned that Josh knew the song. It wasn't that people around Hogwarts had bad taste in music it was just largely uncommon for anyone to know what he was playing a majority of the time. They would say it was nice or that they enjoyed it but half the time the didn't know what he was singing, let alone who it was by. Derrick wanted to kick himself for not associating with this boy sooner. Josh was after all pleasant and didn't seem like a tool. If anything he seemed the total opposite of a tool. Maybe he should associate with some more of the people that he shared the room with. After all they had to have more in common other then their house and the place they showered. All of them didn't give him the impression of being tools anyway although there was one boy in his first year who had although Derrick off the top of his head could not remember him to save his life. Derrick though smiled because he had a feeling that they would be friends and what more could he ask for then that. His fingers went to chord to chord with grace and he began to sing once more.
"Call off the search there’s been no sign for and days and there’s no way to say for sure if less is more. I’m sweating out the fever that’s been spreading on the dance floor. Pick your feet up off the ground they got to move a little faster. Faster to make it out of this disaster will you last or will you fall to your knees?"
Derrick would let him pick up the rest and then finish out the song. He still couldn't help but be a bit elated at the fact that this day, this ugly godforsaken day, was going to turn out very well for him. Derrick knew that this wasn't a guarantee that next year would be better or for the matter that something bad could not happen in the remaining time that the day held but for now he was happy. The rain would continue but for the moment not Derrick's gloom. Maybe that was the solution to all of this he thought to himself. Maybe if he just had friends he'd be able to make it through it all. This could be the key to get rid of all the hurt he was feeling over the matter or at least it could do away with some of it.
Derrick knew at that moment that this was not the case completely and that it wouldn't solve everything for him. That every moment in his life could not be this harmonic and perfect as this one was at that very moment but this moment gave him hope. At the moment and for this year that was all he wanted was hope and not much more. As long as he had that Derrick felt as if he could make it through the year and he wouldn't be this lonely. Maybe the summer wouldn't be spent by himself or maybe it would. Either way Derrick Breckenridge didn't care much about it. Actually all he cared about now as Francesca reverberated the sounds he made and his voice rang out in the room was that he was happy.

Josh continued, his fingers moving just as the boy's did. His acoustic guitar gave the song a rather different sound than the original recording, but he liked it anyways. Josh preferred acoustic to electric anyways, simply because it sounded more...real to him. He couldn't explain it, he just liked it better. Looking up at the boy, Josh flashed his housemate a grin. He seemed to be in a much better mood than he'd been in when Josh first entered, but Josh was still curious as to what was bothering him.
He kept playing the melody, his fingers moving back and forth as he sound repeated itself and then changed and continued on. Josh's body rocked with the music, bobbing with it, his head nodding along. Finally, he ended the song with a little extra flourish and looked at the boy, hoping he would follow suit. "That was great, man," he told the boy with his lopsided grin on his face, "Well done. Something else?"

Derrick heard him complete the hook and dove directly into the into the closing verse with no hesitation. It wasn't so much that he wanted this moment to end but more that he wanted to talk to the boy now. His curiosity had been peaked by his older house mate and now he was quite interested in what he could learn about him. This though was like everything in Derrick's life because once he had a taste he wanted more. It was as if his social life had taken on his quest for knowledge and skill or as his step-parents lovely deemed it his attempt at perfection. He liked that phrase better although Derrick was not attempting in the least to be perfect. Derrick disliked perfection though as it was....well just to perfect and Derrick enjoyed flaws. They were what made people, people in his eyes and he wouldn't have them any other way. Turning his attention back to the guitar and Josh though he continued to play and round out the song.
"At first with all the weight of all this pressure I was fine but now I feel like I have buried myself alive. Drag me out and push me down but hurry up before the surface freezes over now. I’m going to drown I’m going down without a sound. Anchor come and drag me down. Anchor come and drag me down. Anchor come and drag me down. Anchor come and drag me down before I take the dive. Anchor come and drag me down, before I take the dive, I’ll take what I can get. Leave me for dead, I always said you’d find me in over my head. Now you can take it literal instead. I’m bringing it back, I’ll take what I can get. Anchor drag me down before I take the dive."
Derrick finished the song and sat Francesca down gently next to him. Leaning back on his hands as Josh spoke he couldn't help but crack a grin at what his fellow house mate said. It was great and he had enjoyed the moment quite throughly. He would play something else more then willing but for now he wanted to speak with his house mate for a bit. Hopefully Josh would not hold it against him.
"Yes but not just yet I'd like to take a rest if that's alright with you mate. By the way in case you didn't know because we really haven't spoken up until this point I'm Derrick Breckenridge."
Derrick was getting used to the whole introducing himself thing. Just a short time ago he had found it so foreign and so awkward that he was telling people who he was when he knew who they were. Derrick knew though that now in time enough he wouldn't have to go through this trivial matter and he would be able to bypass it altogether this comforted him more then anything else he supposed. Running his hand through his hair Derrick looked at the ceiling as he spoke considering whether or not he should decorate it and if he would get in trouble for doing so. Probably better to bring in a professional for such a thing he supposed.
"So tell me besides my social indifference and what not why have we never spoken before or played together. Granted I fly pretty low on the radar so I wouldn't be surprised if that's why we haven't talked."
Derrick said the last bit as a statement and not as a question. He knew how he was last year and the year before but because of that girl Maddyson this had all changed. Sighing he decided indefinitely to get the ceiling painted and waited for Josh to respond.

"Nice to meet you, Derrick," Josh greeted the boy, placing his guitar next to him as well as he pulled one leg up onto the bed, "I'm Josh York." Josh rested his hands on either side of him, watching the boy. It was clear that he was much younger than Josh, but the older boy cared little. Even if he was younger, that didn't mean they couldn't be friends. He was, after all, Josh's housemate and one the few boys that were actually in Hufflepuff, so he figured there was something they could bond over. It seemed as though it was going to be music that brought them together. That always seemed to be the case.
"I honestly have no idea," answered Josh with a soft chuckle, "I'm sort of the same way. I've been here since last year, but I really don't know many people." The more Josh thought about it, the more he realized how anti-social he had been. Who did he really know there? He knew Matty, but she was really the only one he really knew. But then again, how many people knew Josh? Nobody. Nobody really knew him because he hadn't told anyone the real truth about his family. He sighed softly as that thought passed through his mind. Josh missed his family, even though he was the odd one out of the bunch. They had still raised him as if he was there own, along with all his other adopted siblings. Thinking about them, Josh nearly zoned out until he realized he wasn't alone.
"What were you upset about when I came in?" Josh asked curiously, "I don't mean to pry and if you don't want to talk about it, that's alright. I was just wondering."

Derrick of course knew the boy's name but decided it was for the best that he just acted as if he hadn't. As is he was awkward enough and Josh shouldn't have to worry about why the boy who kept to himself so much knew almost everyones name. Derrick was observant but that could be held against him as creepy or depending on the person a stalker. It was just him being him though Derrick was curious about everything and people mystified him to no end which is why he was so aware of everyone that was in the school. Shaking the thoughts from his head he let the idea that he was in fact even odder then he already thought he was escape his head. He almost chuckled lightly when Josh said he was the same way not because it was unbelievable but because it was just another thing that him and Derrick had in common. They were stacking up now like toy blocks or legos and this was building to something. What it was Derrick did not know.
"Nice to meet you to Josh. Ah you see there is a bit of difference though between the situations. You know a few people up until the train back this year I knew none. I'm quite forgettable or unnoticeable from what I've gathered."
Derrick still had not developed any social graces over that time though as he reminded himself. Every time he spoke he thought he sounded very awkward but maybe it was because of how honest he was being. It was as if it were the only part of him that was still pure was his words and how he conveyed them. Josh though struck a nerve rather quickly with his next question and Derrick may have winced when it was asked but he played it off to the best of his ability. Josh had after all give him an out and Derrick fully intended to take it. It wasn't that he wasn't taking a liking to the boy across from him but Derrick felt that he was no where near ready to start talking to him, or anyone else for that matter, about it. Maybe one day Derrick would grow up and be big about it and discuss it with people but that time was not here yet at all.
"If you don't mind I'd much rather not talk about it at all it's quite the sore subject to say the least."
Derrick had put it as simply as he could. He didn't want to offend Josh by not sharing it with him but it was his life and his problems and until something changed he'd be playing both quite close to the chest. He wanted to change the subject now but didn't know what to talk about just another downfall of his lack of social skills. So for the moment Derrick sat their awkwardly trying not to focus to much on what Josh had asked about and just trying to figure out what to say next exactly. To be honest he wasn't doing to great of a job on either front.

Josh nodded in response, completely in tune with how the boy felt. "Yeah, I know what you mean..." he replied, drifting off his thought slightly at the end. He looked down, getting very quiet all of a sudden. He could still see Derrick out of the corner of his eye, but he kept his gaze from the boy. He wondered what it was that was such a sore subject. Seeing as they had quite a bit else in common, Josh wondered if it had something to do with his family. Usually, people hid things about their families the most and since his family was his biggest secret, Josh often assumed that was what other people hid too. Maybe, if this was about his family, the older Hufflepuff might actually be able to tell his fellow housemate his situation. They could probably both sympathize with each others' plight. "Music always helps me, you know?" Josh continued, breaking the awkward silence in which they had found themselves all of a sudden. He picked up his acoustic again, strumming a couple times before the song popped into his head. It was still sort of a work in progress, for Josh wasn't quite sure if he liked it in it's entirety yet. It was just something he'd been working on himself and no one else had yet heard it. From what he knew of Derrick so far, the boy might actually appreciate it. "This is...just something I wrote," he told his new friend, strumming the first few chords, "It's called Never Think. Be nice." He grinned softly, starting into the song. "I should never think What's in your heart What's in our home So I won't. You'll learn to hate me But still call me baby Oh love So call me by my name." Josh was terrified of sharing his lyrics with another living, breathing human being, so he sang softly. He kept his eyes in his guitar, even though he didn't need to watch where his fingers went. He just didn't want to look at Derrick.

Derrick could tell by the look on his companions face that he did actually know what he meant. For the most part Derrick hated that phrase and the people who often used it. They in fact for the large part did not know what he meant and said this just to try and have Derrick divulge more which was in large the reason Derrick made no friends in the orphanage. Derrick shuddered at the thought of the place and wished that the string of foster parents had been more understanding before he landed at that dreaded place. It was at that place that Derrick heard the phrase repeatedly. It was as if it was around every corner and people were saying it just so they could be included in the conversation on how they lost their parents. This though was not the case with Derrick as realistically how could they know what he meant? How could they know the feeling of sending their parents to their deaths? It was odd but he was jealous of a majority of the children their. After all they had never known their parents so how could they know what they were missing until they were adopted and by then they would be surrounded and drowning in love and understanding. Also the money that came with it seemed to help some of the children along.
It was odd that he thought of it that way but it was the truth as Derrick would see quite a few children come back for things they left behind when they were adopted. From his observations of these children from when they left with the parents to when they came back Derrick had gathered that three types of people adopted. Those who could not have children, those who were rich and didn't want to go through that whole child birth thing(As sad as the wording is he heard quite a few parents phrase it that way) or had never gotten around to having children in their lives, and lastly but not least those who believed every child should have a home. The first group was a rarity with the whole advances in modern science thing going on and people only showed up if previous attempts before had failed. The second two groups were extremely common though and Derrick in a wind of luck had managed to land a combination of the two. Although he was their only adopted child. Turning his attention away from all of that though and back to Josh he noticed that the boy was going through a somewhat similar thought process and Derrick wondered what could be running through his head. Then he heard the boy utter more words that made total sense to him and he nodded his head solemnly; his voice cracking as he spoke.
"Yeah I know what you mean."
Derrick listened as the boy played and couldn't help but feel a form of kinship as he played. Were they misplaced brothers of some sort? All Derrick knew was now he was some what bothered by his social shyness. Even if he had only talked to him Derrick would have been okay with that because this boy, got it to say the least, and to boot he had a muse or something of that sort that allowed him to write. This was something Derrick was sorely lacking and it was in fact the only thing he had yet to conquer in some way shape or form. He could not write lyrics to save his life but this boy could. It was one of the few times in his life Derrick had been envious of anyone or anything. It was more then that though Derrick had found what he wanted to call his brother or at least his best friend because the boy seemed to get it all and quite easily at that. Maybe this growth, understanding, and ability came with age but Derrick didn't know and no matter what he wanted it now. It was in fact turning his thoughts to a jumble messed. Derrick now resisted all urge to begin playing along and let Francesca lay comfortably by his side. Despite the fact that the boy was not done or at least Derrick didn't think he was he spoke the following words.
"That was very good."
It was something he uttered in reverence and because of this he assumed it sounded flat and soft but Derrick didn't know for sure. In the end he was sure it wouldn't matter as Josh understood that Derrick appreciated his music and what he was able to do lyrically. His mind now had regained control of all his thoughts or at least he hoped so and at that moment Derrick decided something. Standing up he placed his hands in his pockets and walked over to the window staring out into the distance through the rain. It was as if he knew where it stopped now and that while it was raining here it probably wasn't back home where he had been born. Turning to face Josh he leaned against the wall and took his glasses off slowly as if to clean them but it instead was to just know that he was making direct eye to eye contact as he spoke.
"If you really want to know what's wrong I'll tell you. Understand though it doesn't leave this room, this is between you and me. I don't think you would tell anyone but this is kind of....a leap of faith for me I guess you could say."
Yes that was the words he wanted to use to describe this. A leap of faith was exactly what it was. Joshua York had managed to be the first person to get him to open up like this and Derrick figured it was most likely due to the fact that they were so much a like or at least he thought they were. Turning to face the window again Derrick waited for the boys response but for once in his life he was facing the subject without dread.

Josh wasn't entirely comfortable with finishing the song, so he played the ending on the guitar and left it at that, feeling that he was slightly red in the face. He glanced up at Derrick, hearing the boy tell him it was pretty good, and he would leave it at that. "Thanks, mate," Josh answered just as quietly, keeping his gaze away from the other boy. Josh hated how shy he was. He had always been that way, for as long as he could remember. How many opportunities had he missed because he was so shy? How many friends had he not made? A soft sigh escaped him again as Josh looked down at his hands. They sat in his lap, fidgeting as they did when he was nervous. In some cases, Josh had almost picked his bones clean when he did this nervous motion.
Josh almost hadn't noticed that the boy got up and walked away. He saw movement out of the corner of his eye and finally looked up, seeing that he was no longer sitting on his bed with his guitar. Josh moved his guitar as he turned to scan the room, seeing that Derrick had returned to his spot by the window. Josh swung both legs over his bed and leaned forward. His elbows rested on his knees as his eyes glanced up to watch Derrick. The way this boy acted, spoke and generally just was, reminded Josh so much of himself at that age. Josh had, of course, become a little more social in his time at Hogwarts but before that, he was very much like Derrick. It made him smile a little because Derrick had a better chance of getting over it now. Hogwarts had helped Josh so much, but he had only been there for just over a year. Derrick, however, would have at least three more years to help him. Silently, Josh wondered if he could maybe even help the boy speak up a little more.
But that thought was cut short as he spoke again. Josh immediately went rigid, not expecting Derrick to actually want to share. Maybe he was farther along than Josh had expected. He wouldn't have had the nerve to come out and share his secret, but Derrick was taking a chance on him. Josh understood how difficult it was for him to do this. He watched as he turned and Josh almost stood up. However, he stayed where he was. "No mate, of course," Josh assured the younger boy, "I understand, I really do. It won't leave this room, I can assure you. Just...just as long as what I tell you doesn't leave it either..."
This was it. Josh was actually going to tell someone.

Derrick stared out of the window and into the distance still. He had no idea what Josh was going to tell him he just gave the boy a nod in understanding. It seemed that he was about to share something of the same nature but right now Derrick had to prepare himself. At the moment he thought crying may have helped but he hadn't been able to do that for years so how could he start now? Shaking the thought from his head Derrick turned now facing Josh and leaned against the wall collecting his thoughts and how he would want to word it. The whole idea seemed scary now but he knew he had to get it out and it'd be healthy probably even therapeutic to tell another person especially one who actually seemed to understand.
"My parents died on this day. I was young but it was my fault. I won't go into much detail about that right now maybe some other time."
Derrick had said it out loud which was the first time he had done that in three years. His step parents had asked so he told them but other then that never really told anyone else. Derrick thought now how the boy would take what he had said about it being his fault. Derrick didn't feel like arguing about such a thing with his new found friend so he made sure this was known. Derrick attempted to say it as nicely as possibly but had a feeling that it probably came out quite a bit harsher.
"And please stow any thoughts you may have of telling me it's not my fault nothing you can say or do will change how I feel about this."
Staring at the window he realized how relieved he felt just to talk about it and to get it off his chest. Well he really hadn't talked about it that much but still it was the principle of the matter. Derrick sighed a sigh of relief for the first time in a long time as he looked into the distance. The rain didn't hurt as much now. Each drop wasn't mocking him and stabbing at his heart as they had been just moments previous. It made him feel much better about the overall experience of his day. Maybe this was the day that he turned for the better. After all wasn't there some saying about it had to get worse before it got better or something like that. Derrick smiled sheepishly and spoke to his new companion.
"I feel much lighter now and the rain.....it doesn't hurt as much."
Derrick moved back to his bed and took a seat on it now looking at Josh. He had said he wanted to tell him something also and Derrick was all ears now. It was odd how they didn't have to say a word it was if they now had the bond that Derrick shared with Niwa. A bond that allowed a simple nod or gesture to mean whole sentences and paragraphs. Petting Niwa silently Derrick nodded to Josh and waited for him to speak.
