For the past couple of days now, Vinnie had been out here on the Great Lake trying out her skills. Wait, what skills? She didn't have any 'rock skipping' skills. She knew it was a bit ridiculous how she couldn't figure it out and had spent so much time trying to get just one rock to skip the water, but that was Vinnie. If you knew her, you'd know that this is very like her. It was just that she wanted to get this and it was very frustrating that she couldn't grasp the simple concept of getting the rock to skip across the lake. With a huge pile of smooth, flat rocks sitting next to her, she began throwing them out on the lake, one by one. She'd spent a good ten minutes gathering the rocks and hopefully all that time wouldn't go to waste. Then again, this whole thing was a waste of time. She could be studying or something more productive, but no. This was important to her. It wasn't like a life or death situation, but it would eventually start eating her up inside if she just gave up and never got this.
After throwing a couple stones and failing, she let out a frustrated sigh. Vinnie wrinkled her nose and tucked her hair behind her ears. This girl was persistant and wasn't going to give up so easily. She bent down and grabbed another rock out of the pile. She ran her fingers over it and let it roll around in her hands a bit before taking it and chucking it out to the lake in a frisbee sort of motion. Her big blue eyes followed the rock until it hit the water. She prayed to God that it would jump back up...
SPLASH!
She rolled her eyes as the rock sunk right into the water. Why was this so difficult? Vinnie had watched people do it and it looked like they weren't even trying. She was trying her hardest out here and still hadn't gotten it. Obviously she was doing something wrong, but what? It was probably the way she was throwing the stone, but she didn't really know how to throw it the right way. There wouldn't be a book on rock skipping in the library, would there? Probably not. Again, she picked up another stone and threw it out into the water, only to have it make a big splash and then sink to the bottom. The girl let out a frustrated moan and then cried, "Oh, come on!" This could definitely be considered pathetic and the idea of giving up was now running through her mind. Irritated, she crossed her arms and just stared out at the still water. The sun shined down on it, making a bright reflection. Stupid rocks.

Derrick wasn't exactly all that sure what he was doing outside at the moment. He had intended to go down to the Quidditch Pitch and have an afternoon of flying but somewhere between the great hall and the common room that idea had gone out the window. Literally. Derrick couldn't really blame Niwa for it but somehow he felt that he should after all the cat had pushed his broom out of the open window. He knew though that he had to take partial fault seeing as he had propped the broom up against the window and for that matter not latched it properly. A summon charm had of course easily returned the broom to his room but it was quite clear that his cat had no intention of letting him fly that afternoon. Derrick knew his cat's moods and this one dictated that he wanted to take a rather nice walk whether Derrick wanted to or not. There was really no way around it seeing as Derrick couldn't argue with the cat and even if he could Niwa would win. Somehow having the ability to destroy pillows and knowing your owner could do nothing about it gave Niwa the upper hand.
So here he was walking aimlessly across the grounds his cat in tow. He had stowed his guitar upstairs thinking it best considering Derrick intended it to just be a light stroll and nothing more. In a way he needed the walk just to clear his head from all the things that had occurred of late. While it wouldn't be an overload for most it was for Derrick as his social situation was usually none existent. Now though for whatever reason it had exploded in his face. He was making friends or at least that's what he would call it anyway. Maddyson was also another large factor in the equation seeing as he was fascinated with the girl to say the least. It was odd because he never really focused on one person for far too long if at all but now he found himself thinking about her constantly. Sighing Derrick shrugged it all off trying to let his mind gain its usual blank state. This though was proving harder then usual and did not seem to be as his thoughts were interrupted by a rather loud moan.
Derrick wasn't sure exactly how long he had been near the lake or for that matter when he had begun to approach it but he was brought to full realization of where he was when he heard the girl yell. Blinking he took it all in basking in the warm sun for a moment and enjoying the calm of the lake. Glancing at the girl he pondered what she had yelled and couldn't help but be curious. Slowly with Niwa in tow he approached the girl standing beside her gazing out into the distance. His words faltered now and the question that had been forming in his mind just moments before was gone. Inhaling he thought simply of Maddyson and told himself to just act as she would in this situation. To be friendly, out going, and all that jazz. Derrick wasn't Maddyson though and the whole talking to people he didn't know thing was still a very far leap for him. Thinking of Maddyson though and her bright friendly composure Derrick stupidly opened his mouth.
"What do you want to come on?"
Derrick wanted to kick himself for how stupid he had just managed to sound. Sure it was his usual soft tone and he had even managed to some how stay calm. This was nothing of a short miracle and it was more so understandable considering the fact that the question had made no sense. Derrick cursed himself silently and just hoped that this wouldn't end too badly for him. Although hoping never seemed to get Derrick Breckenridge far.

Glancing down at the pile of rocks next to her, then out at the lake, Vinnie wondered what exactly she was doing wrong. This whole rock skipping thing was definitely much harder than it looked, kind of like this whole magic thing. You say a couple words and then things with magically appear, right? Oh, so wrong. There was so much more to magic than simple words that didn't make any sense. This was throwing rocks, though! It was a much simpler concept than magic, but for the Gryffindor it was just as difficult. Maybe even more difficult for her. All you had to do was snap your wrist, let that rock fly, and watch the rock jump across the lake. The last part just wasn't working out very well for the girl.
The thought of using magic popped into the girl's head. It was a good idea. Then again, it was sort of like cheating, wasn't it? Using magic to do a simple muggle hobby? Plus, it wouldn't give her the same satisfaction like she'd get if she got it right without having to pull out her wand to help her out. After a couple of days now, though, it was starting to get really annoying and she was starting to get a little desperate about the whole ordeal. Maybe, this time, just this once, she'd give up? It was an awful thought and quickly, she shook the thought of her head. No. The Gryffindor wasn't willing to give up on the easiest task that she could possibly have. She wanted to get this!
"What do you want to come on?"
Vinnie jumped slightly when she heard a voice behind her. She thought she was alone, but obviously wrong. She twirled around and noticed the boy standing near her. For a moment, she just stared, just surprised. Finally, she managed to process the boys question. "Oh," The girl glanced at the lake over her shoulder, then back at the boy. "Well... the rocks I guess?" She wrinkled her nose slightly, trying to figure out the answer. What did she want to come on? The Gryffindor hadn't really thought about it. She just sort of yelled it when she got frustrated. "I just want these rocks to skip the water." Shrugging, she took a good look at the boy. He looked younger than her, maybe. She was almost certain that he wasn't older. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. He didn't seem to be very hostile or anything, so Vinnie quickly became comfortable and loosened up a bit. She wasn't the type of person who was easily intimidated unless you were some huge, scary-looking guy. The girl was a pretty social and friendly person and would talk to anyone who was willing to listen. It didn't matter who you were, really. She'd talk to you.
"Do you know how to skip rocks?" She asked him with big brown eyes. Maybe he could help her, if he knew how to course. If he didn't, maybe he'd like to try it out? Then one of them would learn how to do it in the process. "Because I honestly cannot figure out how to do this. Even though it's the like... the easiest thing." Vinnie felt sort of dumb asking this boy that she didn't know for help in learning how to skip rocks, but by now she was desperate. She just wanted to learn how and then go back to her room and take a nap. She was tired of this and was just tired of today. She wasn't the most patient person in the world, but she was the most stubborn and that definitely wasn't a good combination. She just wanted to get this right and was willing to do anything to get it.
