The lesson would be held outside this day, despite the dropping temperatures. The professor had set up two pens in the yard to the side of the old caretaker's hut: one held what appeared to be a number of hedgehogs and the other held small terriers. A large fire was burning nearby to keep everyone warm and Becca was reading her book on the steps of the classroom as she waited for the students.

"Knarls and Crups, right?" Charlie asked as she greeted the professor. It wasn't that she was psychic (or better yet, know Legilimency). But she had actually read the Course of Study parchment beforehand, though very crumpled beneath old assignments and such. Looking at the pens, she widened her eyes. "They really do look like that, huh..."
It wasn't that she had turned smart overnight. But believe it or not, when Charlie put forth the effort and focus into something, she wasn't half bad at it. And with the scare of the O.W.L.s lingering closer, she had cut back on her personal qudditch time, and giving herself more time to study.
Sitting by the fire to keep herself warm, she did something that she wouldn't have done if anybody was around: she smiled at the professor.

Jade hurried down to her favorite class. She couldn't wait to see the Crups and Knarls. She had never seen one before and really wanted to take this oppertunity to see the new creatures before anyone else go there. But, as she neared the hut, her heart sank. There was someone else already there. And, worse yet, it was a fellow Slytherin! There was no way she could show interest in the animals now.

Jake whistled a light tune as he made his way down from the castle for his Care of Magical Creatures class... He didn't really mind that the temperature was getting colder by the day, he felt comfortable in his black robes, school uniform, and gloves. " Knarls and Crups... " He muttered under his breath as he approached the small group that had formed. " ' lo. " Jake said to them, then turned to look at the fire, his brow furrowed slightly. He shook his head again and then turned back to the lot of them.

Drew had no problem showing his enthusiasm for the creatures. As he neared the pen, he broke out into a light jog, dropping his things by the gate and reaching in to pick up one of the pups. It was only then that he thought of speaking to the professor. "We can pat them, right?" he asked, figureing she wouldn't have put them out there if they weren't meant to be touched.

Drew had figured partially right. She might, on occasion, set the day's creature out before allowing the class to approach it, but she would never have left it unattended to read a book if it weren't ment to be patted. She did tend to get side tracked when she was reading.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Thornton. What were you saying?" she asked as she finished the chapter she was on and finally looked up to see the class had gathered. She didn't need to wait for the boy to answer. Just seeing him there with a cruppy in his arms pretty much told her what he had asked. Ah well it was a good enough place to start as any.
"So we'll start with you, Mr. Thornton," she announced, walking over to the pen and picking up one of the regular terrier pups that were also inside. "Tell me what you have there."

"It's a crup-pup," Drew answered, lightly pulling up on the forked tail so she would know he knew how you know the difference. "You've got a regular puppy. They look the same except for the tail."

"Well done," Professor Davenport answered, pleased with his answer. "Crups have a 3-X designation and, on the whole, make fairly good pets though special licences need to be obtained to breed or own one. Can anyone tell me why?"

"They're aggressive towards muggles." Hiro said as he caught up with the group. Drew had went on agead when he had seen what was in the pen but Hiro kept his pace. "Also they have a wide range of food preferences."
Hiro liked COMC because it was a hands on class and had alot of book knowledge added as well...both of which were easier for him to learn.

Tristan who was already here, I mean he was already here. He was listening to what they we're saying. He didn't clearly understand what these crups things we're. Then hearing Hiro saying they are aggresive over muggles. I can see why thinking of what happened in his past with muggles. He liked them, which was the reason why he took Muggle Studies.
But this isn't Muggle Studies and he needed to get back focused on this subject.

"That, and someone might notice the guy has a funky looking backside," Drew added onto Hiro's answer with a wide grin, holding up the crup's forked tail again. "you have to remove the tail before you let him around Muggles, right?" His grand-dad had a crup back home and was probably single-handedly responsible for all of the dog horror stories told at the post office.

"Excellent points from Ravenclaw," Becca answered. "And to continue what Mr. Thornton said, a simple severing charm ont he cruppy's tail is both effective and painless."
With this, she put down her puppy and picked up a forked tail pup from the pen before pulling her wand out. "Those of you who might be sensitive to this are free to look away," she warned before performing the charm.

Charlie just looked on instead of looking away. She wasn't really sadistic, but watching the procedure was a bit curiously interesting. And while she was usually afraid of dogs, she somehow no problem with crups, though she had to keep her distance. It was either that, or her writer completely forgot about that little fact of crups being dogs. But we'll just go with the former excuse.

Drew watched as the crup's tail was clipped, just because he found it so interesting. The little guy didn't even flinch and if fact was wagging what tail he had left when the professor was done.
"Can we try it?" he asked carefully, not sure Davenport would let them, but still hoping she would give them a chance.
