Becca had opened the classroom early in anticipation of the eager young Arithmancers ready to start a new school year. While she expected a class filled mostly with third years, it wasn't unusual to have a few older students as well.
Arithmancy was obviously not her most favorite subject, but definitely ranked up there among her top five. She had taken the position temporarily at first, but had gotten so used to taking up the lessons that she now thought nothing of taking the double load.
Finishing with her set-up, she took a seat behind her desk, propped her feet up and opened her book. The students would enter soon but she wanted to finish her chapter first.

Perhaps she might finish her chapter in quiet but she would not finish it without a student in the room. Art found his way through the wandering halls and into the third floor classroom and the subject he looked forward to the least, well why had he taken it? He wanted another class and if it didn't work out then hell he would just skip until it didn't matter anymore right? He took a seat near the middle of the room and pulled out his book, his eagle feather quill, some black ink and a few sheets of parchment. after this was arranged on his desk he like the professor pulled out a book. this book though was one he had personally purchased in Flourish and Blotts over the summer due to the invasion last January. It was exactly what it said it was Modern Dueling and Defensive Magics.

Fyona walked quickly and quietly down the corridor to her first arithmancy lesson. As she walked into the classroom she already saw that Art was sitting and waiting. So was the professor who was reading with relaxation. Fyona, who did not have a book with her, felt awkward as she quietly took her seat next to Art and waited for anyone to notice her. Her syllabus had told her what to bring and to Merlin's wonder she had brought them all. She spread some parchment paper out on her desk, and placed her ink and quill beside it. Her arithmancy had its own place to the right of all this as she sat with her hands folded neatly on her desk. First impression were the most lasting... Or something like that. Except she didn't think she was going to make much of an impression like this. Perhaps she should cough. The silence was annoying her.
"Cough cough," she said. It wasn’t a real cough, but saying cough could be just as effective as the real thing, if not more.

The bell chimed the start of class and Becca snapped her book shut. As she put the volume aside, she looked up, surveying the class with an expression of being slightly amused to actually find students in front of her. The class was small like many of her others, but that didn't concern her,and with a contented sigh, she composed herself and got started.
"Good day class. This is Beginning Arithmancy," she started. "We'll begin with what you already know about the subject. That way, I don't have to bore you by going over it again, do I? So let's hear it. Any tidbits you already know? Or perhaps even why you chose this as one of your electives?"

Art didn't snap the book shut at the bell to be honest he ailed to hear it so when he heard the snap of Davenport's book closing he took the second to finish his page and followed suit. he looked up and around the room remaining quiet. The once proud and loud snake was getting more and more quiet, more and more he kept his thoughts to himself. To be honest this was a silence of ignorance, he knew nothing about Arithmancy and he was not going to delude himself otherwise and look like a fool.

Finally class started. Good. That way she could stop feeling awkward.
"Ummm. I don't know anything about arithmancy," except that it sounded like arithmacy. "I chose this class because I thought it would be interesting to learn something that didn't already... know." Of course. That's why they called it learning. Fyona shut her mouth but forces beyond her control forced her to say more. "Umm. It sounds like arithmacy so if it's anything like that then I can say I know my one, two, three's like the back of my hand." Though math was not her best subject and she could still learn a thing or two about her one, two, three's. Like the fact that four, five, and six came after that.

Becca didn't have much hope for this particular group and was about to start scolding them for picking their electives blindly, when one girl finally spoke up. She didn't start off very well, but at least ended with a bit of sense.
"Well, thank you, Miss Richards," Professor Davenport announced. "I'm glad that at least someone knows that yes, Arithmancy has to do with numbers, and that you chose this class for that reason. Ten points to Slytherin."
"Arithmancy is the study of numbers and their magical properties," the professor announced, assuming the students were taking notes. "There are many different Numerological systems, but the one we will be focusing on the most in this class was discovered and perfected by the Greek wizard Pythagoras, and later translated for the Latin alphabet by Agrippa. It is most commonly used as a method of divination, but also has other uses which we will also get into. Questions so far?"

Scorpius had walked into the class a little late but just in enough time to hear what the course was about. He silently went to his seat hoping to be unnoticed, but that usually doesn't happen in Hogwarts. He was almost certain that he would end up losing house points for his tardiness.
Well it's better to be late than never he had thought. He sat there listening to Professor Davenport. He came into the class knowing nothing of Arithmancy hoping to leave the class being at the head of the class. Scorpius always strived to do his best at the classes he was in. He didn't like receiving low marks and he was hoping to be the top in the class.
When the professor was done with her speech and had asked if there were any questions Scorpius's hand flew up into the air.

Shari felt like she'd been sleeping by the time class started. She'd slipped in not wanting to be noticed and heard enough to understand what the course was going to be dealing with. In fact, Shari had barely made it into the class before Scorpius entered, somewhat blindly, and nearly trampled her. It was that physical persuasion that got Shari her seat in the back of the classroom. Had she been here earlier... and there really was no way that could have happened (thanks Peeves!)... she'd have chosen a seat near Fyona. Oh well. This would do. She had no questions... she already knew a thing or two about Arithmancy, and she knew she'd hit top marks for sure in this class, because after all, it was the main reason why she'd chosen the class. The OWLs were very important to her. And this one was going to help her accomplish her goal of being top of the year.

{I'm sorry, but class is over. Mr. Daniels: next time, just ask the question. It takes too long to wait to be called on, wait for the question, and the get the answer I do not mind being god-moded that I called on you If you have a real question, PM me and I'll answer it } +10 points to Miss Richards for answering a question -10 to Mr. Daniels for being late, +5 for attempting to participate Miss Mehra, I let your late entrance go just because you said you came in before Mr. Daniels who said he was "a little late". Next time I will not be so benevolent }
