It was a rainy day, for Annemarie could see it as such outside the window she had in the classroom. A crooked frown upon her face, she shook her head in disgust. As if the class wasn't already dreading the day enough, now there was rain. She was sure it would put all of the students into a fit of laziness and unwillingness to work and give her any kind of participation. She hated when it rained. Of course, it could have been from past experiences in the rain, but most of all she hated it because not even she wanted to work when it was icky out. Annemarie would have rather been in bed with a pint of ice cream, and a very good romance novel. Sighing, there was nothing she could do about it, so she did the next best thing... she ignored it. Rounding the room, she pushed in the chairs of the desks, though she knew they were just going to be pulled out again and went back up to her desk to sit and look across the room. The desks were set up in rows of three. All seats were assigned and had been since the first day of classes. By now, the students would know this, and sit where they were supposed to. Waiting for her class to begin, she put up on the board what they would be discussing for that day: Signs/Symbols of the Muggle World It was a rather broad topic and Annemarie hated to have such topics, but she couldn't see them getting off of just road signs that day. There was enough of them just in London to go over, let alone the rest of the world. She shook her head. This unit was probably the most long and dull the OWL years would have to sit through this term. She could only hope that some of the students would know more of them than not...that way, the discussion would keep itself going.

Jaden felt dirty just at the thought of entering the vile woman’s class. The head of his house should not be teaching about muggles unless it was on ways to exterminate them. He was tense, the idea of spending an entire year in this class made him cringe but it was important and he had chosen this class so he would go. He did a quick workout to help him relax, showered, got ready, and headed down to class. He stopped at the door and took a deep breath, almost expecting it to stink like a filthy muggle inside, and entered. He did not glance towards his head of house as he strode towards his seat, she did not deserve a look from him. He did not mind having assigned seats, this was partially because he liked where he sat. He hoped the person he sat next to him wouldn’t be a muggle lover or muggle born, but he doubted that there were many other students who were taking the class for the same reasons he was.
He sat down and pulled out a roll of parchment, a quill, and an ink well. Ready he glanced up at the board and wrote the topic at the head of his paper. With all this done he finally looked at the professor for a moment and then turned his eyes towards the door and waited for the others to arrive.

This class was going to suck. Big time. Matty didn't haven't anything against professors, and in this case, she wasn't holding an unnecessary grudge on Professor Van Aller. It's just that she wasn't really looking forward to this course. Simple as that. Especially if there was a whole lot of Third Years in her class. The Hufflepuff sighed as she walked down the Corridor to her class. her bright green eyes looked over the doorway and she sighed. Matty pushed open the door, to see the class practically empty. The girl glanced at the Professor, offering her a smile. "Hi professor," she said politely, before turning and letting the smile drop from her face. The Hufflepuff took a seat, which was in the same row, though a table apart, from a Slytherin boy.
"Hey." Matty said softly with a smile to the boy. She took out her gear, before casually sitting in her chair. Tianne, Ryan and Abby were all supposed to be taking this class, although she wasn't sure when they'd turn up. The Hufflepuff leaned into the back of her chair, picking up a pencil and doodling on the margin on her exercise book. Man, was she not going to enjoy Muggle Studies this year.

Coming from a muggle born family, growing up in the muggle world and living in a muggle house, Tianne would have thought that she had an advantage, but no, this wasn't Tianne's best subject. In fact, she was going probably the worst in this subject, so she preferred to do her other ones, making her forget about the poor grade that was hanging over her. She just could njot do the subject, it was just to complicated compared to what the muggle world was actually like. Well, in Tianne's opinion anyways.
The girl dressed in her newly pressed robes and polished school shoes entered the classroom. She took her seat, the one right next to Matty, smiling at the Professor as she passed her. Matty appeared to be talking to a boy, so Tee just wuietly got out her books. Facing up at the board, to seek the subject that they would be studying today. The girl was happy for once in this class, she knew a few signs and symbols, maybe she was going to be good at this topic.

Ryan too had come from a muggle family, but he still knew that Muggle Studies wasn't going to be the funnest nor the easiest subject. The boy so far was going okay with it, as he was with all of his subjects, but there was always room for improvement. Ryan was just happy that so far, he hadn't recieved a failing grade, and wasn't all disappointed that he hadn't yet scored a top mark, as he knew that he was never anything really special when it came to grades. All he knew was that this year, the boy would have to buckle down and study, as his owls weren't going to make themselves, now were they?
The boy was clad in his messy robes that miraculously had been ironed, ("What the..." Ryan had said, when he had woken up to the robes on his bed. "Damnit..." He said, as he stood up.'') The boy just liked being messy, even though his teachers were almost always against it. Ryan slowly walked into the classroom, giving the professor a polite nod, and took his seat in between Matty and a boy that Ryan didnt know. He didn't mean to interrupt their conversation, but this was his set seat, and he wasn't gonna sit anywhere else and risk detention. Not this year, anyways.

Jax was unsure of what to think. It wasn't that she disliked this class, or that she liked it...but she wasn't strong feeling in any kind of way towards it. What she did like, however, was the fact that she wasn't the youngest in the class anymore. Being in the fourth year, she was just as close to the bottom of the class totem, just as much as she was close to the top. And even medium...possibly neutral? Jax was still unsure. What she did know, however, was that neither Snake nor Lianna, the only two people she even talked to....ever....wasn't in this class with her. And due to the fact that Felicity had excelled in the OWL or something...she wasn't in the class with her any more either. Very alone...that's what Jax was.
However, again, it didn't matter. This class was good like that, and it seemed that van Aller had been looking out for her...well, maybe not, but the assigned seats at least gave Jax a place to sit without having to have an excuse other than 'that's-where-I-belong' according to the schedule. Already having classes with van Aller that quarter, they had been speaking about all sorts of different things and the seating made Jax a bit more comfortable. However, it was only a bit.
"Hey guys," Jax said, greeting the two guys she sat in between, Tianne, and she threw a slight smirk at Matty. She wasn't sure on what grounds they stood, but it was better she be polite...it was the quidditch field where their exhortations belonged. Taking her seat, she slouched a bit and hated being in the front...what was the point. Looking around, she didn't see most of her class and she wondered if they were coming...
...Jax heard the rumors....It didn't seem like any one really liked Muggle Studies that much.

So muggle studies...not exactly Kari's favorite class. It proved to be somewhat interesting but seriously what use was this going to be when the left Hogwarts? Well, alright maybe it would help in a way but the gryff still perfered broomsticks to cars any day. Studying the difference between a rubber duck and rollerskates was not exactly to only thing that Kari was unenthusiastic about. The girl heard things about their professor that were not exactly the kind of things to be heard. But there was also something about the woman taking a whole chunk of points from Slytherin last year. Indeed it was a rare thing to hear that a head of house should take away points from their own house. Guess she really just didn't take any nonsense even from Slytherin.
Karina yawned as she entered the classroom and sat next to a serpent boy she didn't quite know. Anyway she was too sleepy to care but putting her things down and dragging out a quill and parchment, Kari began to write the topic down before sitting back and staring up toward the ceiling.

Jaden watched as the others filtered into the room, he nodded at the first girl to enter and smiled; not friendly but in mainly just indifferently. It did not take long until another girl – younger by the looks of it – came and sat down next to him. She was pretty, he hoped that she was pureblood, or at least a half-blood raised as a wizard. He could settle for that, if she was muggle however…well at least he would have somebody to torment.
“What’s you name?” He asked [Jax], it was a valid question; if she was half-blood or purer it was in his interest if she was a mudblood then he needed to know all of the mudblood names anyway.

That day, Jax had spiked her short blond hair up in the back, allowing her longer bangs to curve around her face, framing it as they were meant to do. As of late, Jax had been styling her hair daily and making sure that she looked extra good for Snake. As she was in Muggle Studies though, she sighed, knowing that for that class, looking good was just a waste of time. When the boy beside her, whom she had heard his name was like Jaden or something from the previous classes of Muggle Studies that beginning of the year (for this was not the first class), asked her of her name, Jax smirked a bit, her blue eyes lighting just slightly. "Jax's the name. Jax Chaput. You're like Jaden or something right?" she asked back, snorting just slightly.

Chaput. He made a mental note to check and see if she was a pure blood later. Of course he might get around to asking her later today, but maybe not.
"I go by J.D." He replied stiffly, the first impression she had left on him was a mixed one. She seemed stuck up, snotty, which was never a good thing but she also seemed strong-willed and self-assured which could be good but also could be bad. Having nothing else to say to her, he began studying the teacher.

It seemed the day had not done anything for the spirits of the OWL years as the students continued to walk in, none of which decided to greet her with anything but a smile or a nod, except for a Huffle student, Miss Wentworth. “Good day, Miss Wentworth,” Annemarie smiled and also returned the nods and smiles from the other students as well. Or at least she tried. The day outside was really taking a toll on her as well, and just as much as it seemed to be taking with her students. Ah, well…Annemarie liked the older years and their classes better any ways. However, what did make her day though was how many Gryffindor students she found that actually were still coming to her classes. After her dilemma with Felicity Hjort and the fact that she had taken one hundred and fifty points away from her at one time, (that wasn’t even including the other points she had taken from that particular house last the year,) Annemarie was certain that the Gryffindor students would avoid her as if she had the black death. With that in mind, and the students still sitting in front of her she smirked and nodded her head to herself. They must have been the diligent, respectful students from the house. Or…ones that wished to try their luck as much as their housemates like to. Either way, Annemarie could already sense that the class wasn’t going to be as unmemorable as she once thought it would be. Taking into account the seats that were empty, she quickly took role (it was so much easier to do with the assigned seating) and closed her attendance book. “Welcome, all to yet another Muggle Studies class. Today we’re going to be learning about muggle signs and symbols. Commonly found markings in the muggle world that can direct your path so that if you are ever traveling within the realms of the muggles, you will always be able to find your way.” That unit they had been learning about different sort of signs and symbols all over the world. Today, they’d be focusing on American signs, such as road signs, hospital signs, what the different colors of signs meant and so on. “First, we’ll start with these ones.” Annemarie waved her wand and put up the markers up on the wall. “Can anyone tell me not only what these signs mean, but what the yellow represents on the signs themselves?” ((CLASS HAS STARTED. YOU MAY STILL SAY THAT YOU ARE IN THE CLASS, BUT IF YOU SAY THAT YOU ENTER LATE…THEN CONSEQUENCES WILL OCCUR. –Professor van Aller))

Devin was so excited to be in this class. She remembered playing with her muggle neighbors as a little girl, but she didn't understand a lot of what they were talking about. They really liked the 'telly' and rode in 'cars'. It didn't matter in games of make-believe, when Devin could add in ideas from real life without them knowing. That had been a lot of fun.
But she had been so curious about what was going on in their lives. How they survived without magic. She thought it couldn't be done, until she realized their neighbors were different and did it every day. Too bad she couldn't ask her friends about everything without looking strange. A few early questions got her funny looks. It had been easy to tell that these were things everyone was supposed to know. Devin had felt so silly then.
But now she could learn without feeling like she had done something wrong in asking. Everyone else here was interested in it and knew about as much as she did. She could be herself and not be seen as stupid. In fact--
Devin sat up straighter as class started. She looked strangely at the yellow diamonds that appeared on the wall. They were so odd and didn't seem to make any sense. Why would these strange pictures be used to tell directions? Muggles were so funny sometimes.
However, she did notice something. Emboldened by Professor Van Aller's question, Devin spoke up. "Three of those have pictures of cars on them. They look like the ones our neighbors use sometimes."

When the class began, Tianne became quiet. She didn't want to make too much noise, in case the teacher got angry at her, in which she knew could very well happen. She smiled over at Matty, as she folded her arms in front of her. To tell the truth, Tianne wasn't sure why she picked this subject. She had grown up around muggles, she had lived like a muggle until she was eleven, and she was actually better handling muggle things than she was handling wizarding things. But never-the-less, Tianne found herself in her muggle studies class, and she wasn't really that ecstatic t be there.
As Tianne looked at the yellow diamonds, that had made themselves clear on the wall, she smiled, knowing that she knew a few of them. "The one the car and the lines behind it, thats saying that the road can get wet and slippery, I think." Tianne said, pausing to examine another of the signs. "The one with the people on it, that means that this is a spot where pedestrians usually choose to cross." Tianne knew what a few of them meant, but she didn't really want to answer to all of them, and she wanted to give others a try.

Shari, who was present in body but nowhere near being present in mind, laughed when she saw the signs. Muggles cracked her up. Of course she had been in the Muggle world, best of all she'd been in the United States where signs like these were everywhere. She figured, since most Muggles seemed to lead her to believe this, that the signs meant something but no one really knew exactly what they meant: most American Muggles had a difficult time agreeing with each other on what the signs meant. Nonetheless, Shari knew she'd already lost her house some points so she waited for the girl nearest her to finish speaking before answering:
"The yellow background means that Muggles should be weary of something ahead, on the road as she said," Shari pointed to the girl next to her. "Usually its a warning based on the image within the diamond, for example, the signs with the arrows pointing in various directions - those signs are warning Muggles that there is to be a turn in whichever way the arrowhead is pointing. That one that looks like an upside down U means that Muggles can make that sort of turn in the mobiles."
Shari felt proud of herself. She'd been around Muggles, but she wasn't in anyway a Muggle herself... not even close really. She was full-blooded witch, descended from a proud and long line of Hindi-Islamic witches. She was proud of it herself. Muggles made her laugh.

Abby was ready to poke herself in the eye. Assigned seating? It ticked her off. She didn't see any need for it. The professor would be able to learn their names and who everybody was without having assigned seating if she just tried. And where Abby had been put was so close to the professor's desk that she couldn't even make fun of it when the professor wasn't looking. The seat next to her was filled with one over-enthusiastic third year as well, which didn't help the whole situation.
With a sigh, Abby kept her head down in a kind of protest, looking at the professor with bored eyes. She knew all these signs already, they were ones you learned when you were getting your license. Abby was planning on getting a Muggle license when she went home this summer, so she actually did need to learn what these signs meant.
