Arianna stepped slowly into the classroom and took one quick glance around. Frowning, she hurried to a seat in the back corner. In truth, she wanted to hide from the world at the moment. But she had to come to class if she couldn't prove she was sick. Of course, even if she was sick, a quick trip to the Hospital Wing usually cleared it up in a matter of moments.
And so, Arianna had come to Runes, moody and upset.

Jack knew that Drew was ignoring him a purpose (how rude it wasn’t like he was Ty ) and just laughed. Turning back around in his seat he didn’t bother to get out any of his supplies or books considering he didn’t know what they were going to be doing during the lesson. Fidgeting with one of the sleeves on his robes he looked around the class wondering how many students there actually was taking Ancient Runes. After all there were only him and Ash in his class.

Another glance over at Miss Xin, Mason cleared his throat loudly. A real teacher would wake a sleeping student up right? A real teacher wouldn't allow that behavior right? But waking her up in front of everyone? Mason really didn't want to do that to anyone in front of everybody.
"We are going to talk about a total different language system today," he began and flipped his huge book open. "This is meant to be a fun and special class, so the material is not going to be on your year exam. So, who knows anything about Chinese?"

"I know it's read from top to bottom instead of left to right," Drew answered... or was that Japanese? "They also use characters that represent words, not individual sounds like we do. If you change one brush stroke in a character it can change the whole meaning."

Diaz sat there mutely, afterall she didn't really know anyone yet and greeting people was slightly over the top when she was still putting names to faces. After the initial reaction of thinking she wasn't supposed to be here, she was shocked back into classroom thought when the professor spoke.
Chinese...? French she knew, chinese not so much. And what on earth did chinese have to do with ancient runes? Figuiring an explanation would come, Dee continued with her silence.

"Correct on the last two parts, but Chinese sometimes is also read from left to right," the professor stated. "When written vertically, the right most column is the first, and it reads from right to left. When written horizontally, it is read from left to right." "Regarding the brush stroke, here's one example," he glanced over at the book before walking over to the board. "The one on the left means jade, and the one on the right means the king, and the difference between them is only one simple stroke."

"Eh, the difference between jade and king isn't so big of a deal," Drew added, thinking that the true meaning could be figured out contextually. "Now if it were king and butthead, that would be something else entirely."

Matthias chuckled to himself at Drew's comment. Sitting in the back, he'd been in the classroom for a while, but had done his best to remain inconspicuous. He may enjoy this class, but that didn't mean he wanted any special attention from the teacher before the beginning of class. Or any attention, for that matter. Luckily, his height (or lack thereof) generally made it easier to hide in the back.
Chinese was an interesting enough language, but the connection to ancient runes wasn't really obvious to him. Unless it was something about runes that could also be easily altered with a single stroke. That was possible. He decided to wait and see where this lesson went.

Well, he might be able to hide from the professor and most of the class, but the new Slytherin fifth year certainly couldn't hide from anyone else sitting in the back row. Arianna had sort of zoned out at the mention of Chinese characters. Others might find it all interesting, but she'd had similar lessons when she had to relearn Qui, which was partially derived from Chinese. In other words, the lesson wasn't at all interesting. New kids were, though.
"Hey," Arianna reached across the empty desk sitting between her and Gardyner before passing over a folded piece of parchment and offered him a smile, which indicated that the note was for him. Inside was a small cartoon she had sketched in her zone-out time of a boy and a girl running off together while the rest of the class was attacked by vicious Chinese characters and Egyptian hieroglyphics. The last square had the girl congratulating the boy for getting them out of a horribly boring lesson while trying not to laugh at the distraught look on the boy's face while he muttered, "I think just did something involuntary...and messy."
Note passed, Arianna turned her attention back to the front of the room, attempting to listen to the lesson. She supposed something important would be said. At least she was in a somewhat better mood than she had been. Drawing something funny always did that. It would be even better if the stranger also found her drawing funny. If not, well....he wasn't really worth anymore of her time, was he?

Kay was almost falling asleep in the middle of the room, having sneaked in before class started. She wasn't too interested in the Chinese language, but still, if it was going to be on the test, she might as well start to take notes. She started scribbling down what the Professor was showing everybody, and really, she could not see a difference between "jade" and "king". They looked the same to her. Also, why do they have different ways of reading, depending on if it was written vertically or not? It just didn't make sense to Kay.

Jack thought that the lesson on Chinese symbols was quite interesting and was taking down notes on the differences of the two characters on the board until Drew spoke again. He couldn’t help but laugh and looking up he wondered how the professor was going to take it, but maybe Drew was always like this in Ancient Runes. He didn’t know this was the first lesson that he had actually had more then himself and Ash in a class. He thought that Mason would take it pretty well, but you never could really tell.

Matthias looked over when he heard the girl. He returned her smile and took the parchment. Unfolding it, he found an amusing cartoon inside. It made him chuckle quietly after he read it. The art wasn't exactly the best he'd ever seen, but it was fine for a quick sketch, and the humor made up for whatever the art may have lacked. He wrote in a blank spot on the parchment, "Pretty funny" and slid it across the empty desk towards the girl. He gave a quiet hiss in her direction to get her attention, then returned his attention to the front. It would hardly do to get in trouble for not paying attention, after all.
((OOC: Matthias isn't really new, he's just not been overly noticable...))

{eh, he's new to Ari } Arianna quickly read the short note and grinned. Hey, her day was going better already. She might even pay attention to class now. Well, after she finished up one last thing. Dipping her quill again, the scrawled across the back of the parchment with her loopy handwriting. Keep it. I can show you even better than this. Meet me in the corridor after class.
P.S. My name is AriannaFinishing off the short note, she folded it back up, leaned over the empty desk and tossed it to the boy again. With renewed spirit, Arianna pulled another roll of parchment from her bag, not to draw silly cartoons or to show of her true artistic talent, but to take notes. She even held a hint of a smile on her lips for the rest of class.

Matthias quickly read the note. He managed to find a large enough piece to tear off without ripping the cartoon, and wrote his reply on it. "Will do. I'm Matthias." He slid it across the empty desk and returned his attention to the professor again. This would be interesting, both the class and the meeting afterwards. He knew he'd seen Arianna at least once before, if only in the class, but he hadn't known who she was. He really had nothing to do after class, so meeting someone new promised to be fun. Or more fun than the lack of activity he had been looking forwards to.

What Drew said was true, very funny too. But that light-hearted moment was quickly replaced by something else when he noticed what's going on with the two students sitting at the back. Some said students usually behaved better in electives, because they chose to take it. But clearly, it was not true for all.
"Miss Shriver-Kailas, Mr Gardyner," he looked at the girl and held his hand out. It was a very crystal clear signal asking the girl to hand him the note. It was not difficult to understand.
