The lesson continued, more chinese than runes. While some might say it was cultural and polite to know at least a part of most languages, Dee really couldn't be bothered. She didn't see how this would end up on an Ancient Runes test and if it was so important than why had the professor brought so many different classes together? Putting it to the back of her mind, Diaz allowed herself to quickly inspect what was going on in the rest of the classroom - not a lot by the looks of it, and then some ample day dreaming time. It was the perfect day for it, the sun was shining in through the large window and as she found her eyes beginning to get blurred, she rested her head in her hand and relaxed.

Will do. I'm Mathias
Arianna grinned down at the scrawl on the scrap of paper and made a mental note not to forget to wait outside the classroom. She was about to tuck it away when the professor called out her name. Shrugging, Arianna pulled the note back out and, with a small movement of her finger, sent it drifting toward the professor. Good, now he, too, would know the boy's name.

He grabbed the parchment and glanced over. He knew and saw there was another piece of parchment. But no, he was not going to ask for that piece at that moment.
"Miss Shriver-Kailas, instead of Chinese, I believe it will be more beneficial for you to study on your Egyptian," he said. He had no idea what to do with this girl, the one who had never really shown any interest in the subject. "Why don't you take a break and go study in your common room, and come back after this period is over? I would like to talk to you, in private."

Egyptian? EGYPTIAN! Drew wanted to do Egyptian! He knew that was on the NEWT test for sure, the question asking to compare runes to hyrogliphics. He had already stated his opinion on doing a lesson he didn't need, and while he thought it was kind of cool learning about Chinese characters, he'd rather work on something that could help him later on. He looked up at Professor Mason expectantly, hoping he'd be allowed to work on Egyptian as well... not realizing, of course, that Ari had gotten busted and was being dismissed from class.

Arianna frowned. She had just started getting into the lesson and now she had to leave? True, her Egyptian needed more work, but if she had to leave class, that meant she was in REALLY big trouble. It also meant she would have a little trouble meeting with Matthias afterward.
"Can't I just stay and listen?" she questioned the professor sheepishly. "I won't do it again. I promise."

Well. This wasn't good. Arianna had gotten in trouble, and it was partly Matthias' fault. He felt rather bad about that, and would have tried to apologize to her if the professor hadn't been right there. Since the prof was, however, he likely would have only gotten himself into trouble and her into deeper trouble, so he did his best not to call attention to himself. He still felt somewhat like he was betraying her or something, though. He'd have to make sure to apologize when they met later.

The professor ran his hand through his hair, and closed the book on his desk. It probably was his fault to have a "fun" lesson right before exam. Chinese had nothing to do with Ancient Runes, although the language was indeed ancient. It was not on any examination either; he just thought it would be interesting.
He did not miss the look on Mr Thornton's face. The boy probably was hoping he too could be excused from class, so he could study some more. "You know, learning really is not a very good use of time if you don't enjoy it," he shook his head at the girl. He knew he shouldn't make it too personal, but he would be lying if he said he didn't feel discouraged. "Please come back after class so we can talk about your 7th year. Mr Thornton, as well as those of you who wish to study for your exams, you are free to go."

Well, this was a strange turn of events and Drew was in a quandry. Sure, he wanted to go study. Sure, he wanted to look up Egyptian. But what he REALLY wanted to do at that very moment was to pick Mason's brain about the OWL.
He also realized that Ari wasn't being given a special privlege. She was being thrown out of class. Not good. He looked from Ari and back to Mason, hoping the professor would change his mind and let them both stay. Raynor would kill him if he got kicked out.

Learning really is not a very good use of time if you don't enjoy it.
Arianna stared at the man as the words ran through her head, her mouth partially open as though she were going to say something but couldn't quite figure out what to say that wouldn't get her further into trouble. Okay, maybe she wasn't as partial to learning as, say, Drew and Allegra, but she wouldn't go so far as to say that she didn't enjoy it. Heck, she was a Ravenclaw! She had read somewhere around half the library in her time here, always got her homework done days before it was due, and never complained about lessons. Why he thought she didn't enjoy Runes was something Arianna could not figure out.
Sighing to herself, Arianna shoved everything back into her bag and stood up to leave. Hopefully that hour or whatever until the end of class would give her enough time to get her good mood back. It was now slowly slipping back to the bad one she'd had moments earlier.

Mason waited a while after Miss Shriver-Kailas left before speaking again. With the original lesson plan thrown out of the window, he had to come up with something else. He supposed he could really call the entire lesson off, but some of the students chose to stay (or they were still day-dreaming ), and so should he. "Why don't we talk a bit about your exams then?" he said to the class. "Not just about Runes, but for all the other subjects, how is your studying?"

Drew crossed his arms on his desk, lowering his head on his hands as he pouted a little over Ari leaving. When Professor Mason switched gears, he kept his head down, but still answered.
"I've got to get at least five Es on my NEWTs... which means I need to E at least that many OWLs..." He felt he had three classes in the bag, but wasn't sure if he'd pull through on the other two. And then, he really wanted to have a buffer, just in case. But of course, it couldn't be some piddly buffer. No on in the Auror office cared if you O'd Care of Magical Creatures.

The mood was gloomy, but Mason himself was not feeling that eager to cheer others up. "What subjects are you not confident about?" he asked. The Ravenclaw probably was just nervous. He knew Mr Thornton had an older sister who was about to graduate. He probably would go to his sister first, if he needed any help.

"This one," he said with a small smirk before rattling off the rest of his list. "Astronomy the most... History, Herbology, Arithmancy... but yeah... Astronomy." He would have so failed the class by now if it hadn't been mostly theoretical, but he heard the OWL was almost all practical.

Dee just kept her head down, although she was listening to what was been said. She had a tendancy to keep quiet during conversations like this, she always felt she would do okay during most exams although of course there were subjects she didn't feel as confident in but those were the ones her grandmother had gone over most with her.

"This one you most definitely won't have any problem with," he stated with confidence. He only had two fifth years. Mr Thornton would be fine, the new girl, Miss Riley, he would have to see. And Mr Gardyner...He just wished he had more time.
"Astronomy however, it's not exactly my area," he said with a shrug. "Have you tried going to the upper year students for help? Ask them for advice and such?"
