The first lecture of the 3rd years wasn't too bad, which made him feel more at ease facing the 4th years. He knew one student from before. For the others, he supposed he would need to make sure everyone was on the same before he should move on to Baybayin, ancient script of the Philippines.
He was flipping through one of his reference books when his first fourth year walked in. "Welcome," he greeted the student friendly.

Ancient Runes had been something that Evie had always wanted to take, and now that she was able to take it, she couldn't believe how lucky she was. Lucky, and nervous. She was sure that all the other students in the room knew exactly what they were doing when it came to runes, which meant that Evie would be behind in class once again. When the Professor finally spoke, the blonde girl couldn't help but smile at his happy nature. Maybe this term wouldn't be so bad, she thought to herself.

Well, Ancient Runes was certainly new for Matty, but thats exactly why she was taking it. Last year the girl hadn't been open for it, though this year she had managed to change. As the Hufflepuff entered the Ancient Runes classroom, a smile hit her face. A fellow Fourth Year in front of herself, had just been greeted by the Professor, that had lifted her spirits. Matty nodded to the Ancient Runes Professor, before taking a seat a row or so from the front.
Besides being excited about starting a new class, Matty was actually sort of nervous, thinking that she was going to be one of the ones that had only just started Ancient Runes this year, but then again the Hufflepuff was ready to take this new challenge. Taking out her equipment, Matty's green eyes scattered around the room, noticing faintly the greeted Ravenclaw. She had a good enough feeling about this years classes.

Taking out her quills and parchment, Evie began to look around the room. She looked to the Hufflepuff girl that she had seen in a few of her other classes and smiled, dipping her quill in ink. "Hello." She ventured with a bubbly smile, looking over at the girl. "I'm Evie." She introduced herself, sketching absentmindedly on her parchment.

"Hello," the professor waited for them to settle in comfortably before starting the day's lesson. Small classes, while required more efforts, were still very enjoyable to do.
"Since this is a class for the 4th years," he continued. He wasn't very familiar with this group of students, and was very interested in their background. "Before we begin today's material, can you tell me something about runes? And you know about it?"

Matty sighed for a moment, before she heard a voice. A girl from Ravenclaw was speaking to her. A wide smile split over the Huffle's face, as she introduced herself to Matty. "Hey Evie, I'm Matty." she said in a cheery tone, before looking back up to the Professor. The girl basically didn't know a thing about Runes, well, make that nothing. Matty was actually hoping to gather some text books she could read up on while in the class. Raising her hand slightly, her green eyes focused on the Professor. "Well Professor, I don't really know anything about Runes, thats why I'm here to learn about them." she said in a calm tone.

"Matty. I like that name." Evie said with a small smile. "You're in Hufflepuff right?" She didn't really know. It was hard to keep all the colours of her fellow students straight. Hearing the Professor's question, she raised her hand and smiled. "I know one of the alphabet forms. but I'm not sure which one." Sighing, the blonde bit her lip, hoping she had made the right decision in speaking up. Otherwise she was not sure exactly what would happen. What if she had spoken out of turn? What if she had annoyed the professor because she hadn't addressed him? Or what if she had done any of the other numerous things that she could have done to make a bad impression. Sinking lower in her chair she did her best to hide.

Matty smiled as Evie commented on her name. "Thanks, Evie is a very exotic name." she said, meaning what she had just said. "And yep, I am." she said, looking down from her House crest to Evie's. "And you're a Ravenclaw I'm guessing." she said with a grin, before looking up to the Professor, just before Evie spoke. Once the girl had finished, Matty smiled to her as she lent into her chair. "At least one of us knows something about Runes." the Hufflepuff said with a slight smirk, still looking up at the Professor. She had a feeling it was going to be a rough class if the girl wasn't able to grasp Runes.

Mason frowned very slightly. He expected the 4th year should know something about runes, because they should have taken runes before. Perhaps these were transfer students? One way or another, if they didn't know about runes, they would have a lot of learning to do this year.
"Alphabet forms huh," he repeated, left hand rubbing his chin. That answer was hardly conclusive, but at least was something. "Well, we will see if Mayan Runes was the one you knew."
"Without the runic background," he continued. "Have neither of you heard of the term Mayan Runes before?"

Evie laughed at Matty. "Not exotic. My full name is Evalyn. But that sounds like a ninety year old woman so I stick to Evie. All cute and bubbly like." She said, smiling. Looking over at the professor, she sighed. She knew that it wasn't the Mayan runes that she knew. So, curling up into herself slightly, she looked down at the parchment on the desk.

Matty smiled at Evie. "Aw, it's not that bad." she whispered after a moment, now looking up at the Professor. Mayan... Mayan... Mayan... History class in year five was about the ancient wonders of the world... Yes! You did a project including some sorts of runes! the Hufflepuff girl thought to herself. "When I was a fifth grader we learned about the ancient world and some cultures, they mentioned about some different types of runes." frowning slightly the girl went on. "Not that I remember much, but a few symbols I can slightly recognize, but unfortunately I can't remember their names." sighing slightly, the Hufflepuff wasn't too happy with herself at the moment.

"Mayan Runes was used by the Mayans, of course," the professor said gently. This lesson was meant to be a short introduction lesson so not a whole lot of information needed to be covered. "And the Mayan civilisation lasted from about 500 BC to 1200 AD"
"The Mayan script is logosyllabic combining about 550 logograms and 150 syllabograms," he continued. "And we are going to cover those throughout the year."
