Avery sat at her desk mulling over a few piles of papers needing attention. She had essays to read, assignments to grade, lessons to plan, amongst numerous other things. She was very glad that she had no higher position than teacher. She couldn't imagine how much work the Heads of House had, or the Headmistress.
She knew how much work her father had while he served on the Wizengamot as Chief. He was always bringing home his briefcase full of things. But he always made time for his family; something Avery is still thankful for, all these years later.
She had just returned from a lovely supper in the Great Hall, and had so many things to do before her candle was finally extinguished. She had her glasses on the tip of her nose, much to her dismay. A few lamps were lit, and she had a candle or two around the room ignited. Of course the lights surrounding the portrait of Her Majesty were lit. They always were.
She was concentrating on the essay infront of her so hard, she barely heard the door knock. "It's open, please do come in."

New additions to the staff were floating in one by one, and he had met, none of them. He knew perhaps a mere third of the staff and it was halfway through term. Such a low number of knowledge was unacceptable to his Ravenclaw alumni mind, as well as educator's formality. It would be remedied one by one. And why not start with the most recent.
The name was recognizable enough, that it seemed familiar for one reason or another, but the reason for its recalling as beyond him for the moment. After knocking on the door and taking his standard step back he was beckoned in by an older voice, older than expected perhaps but not surprising.
"Madam Thorne, I do so assume?" Robert inquired after opening the door just enough for himself to enter.

When the door open, Avery rose in custom and a polite fasion she always held. When the younger man walked, she smiled. She had seen him at the staff table a few times, but didn't know his name or his subject.
"You assume correctly." She said and motioned for him to take a seat. She would wait until he was seated before she would resume her position. "Avery Thorne," She said and extended her hand to greet him. "I assume you know my brother, Cody Thorne, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Mr....? I'm afraid I don't know your name, I'm sorry."

"I have, rather, the name sounds familiar, I can only assume that such would be the reason." Robert replied, shaking the woman's had firmly before taking a seat. It was a quaint little office, much like his own, but they were all similar in such fashions he assumed.
"Robert Shaw, Herbology. Thought I might remedy my lack of knowledge of the rest of the Hogwarts staff, after all, we all are serving the same purpose." He enlightened the woman with both name, position and purpose of being.

"Indeed." The woman smiled when Robert shook her hand and took a seat. She then, herself, sat down at her padded arm-chair. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Robert."
The old woman picked her wand up and waved it, tapping it twice on the desk. Two purple china cups appeared, filled with steaming tea. "Would you care for tea or sugar?" She said, taking a quick sip of her's.

"Likewise yourself Madam Thorne, likewise." Robert replied initially before the woman conjured forth the most unexpected tea. Though an English custom, it was still most surprising to see it simply appear from mid-air, wizard or not.
"No thank you, but thank you for the offer never the less." He replied. Tea, was not on his list of thigns to do or have at the moment. But, he did admire that the woman had customary courtesy.

Avery smiled and nodded when he declined the tea. She waved her wand over the tea cup causing it to disappear. "As you wish, Mr Shaw."
The old woman curtly took a drink of her tea, allowing the warm brown liquid to flow down her throat. "So, Mr Shaw, I assume you are, yourself, a Hogwarts Alumnus, am I correct? Certainly not long ago, did you graduate. I'd say...somewhere in the ninties?"

"Class of ninety-two, Ravenclaw House. What of yourself, I assume just about all of Britain came here at one point or another..." Robert replied, not bothering to laugh at the little jest. There wasn't much a point in doing so.
But she had at least one Wizengamot contact, which may prove a tad more useful then he first thought. Perhaps he could uncover more over time about just what was going on. It was hard to get contacts in the Ministry, one would need to get as close as possible if one wanted to find out anything anymore. That was how it always was. And Merlin, was this close...
Suspicion, allegiance, vandalism, and under the table deals and bounties, it was all returning at a slow but damaging pace.

"Ahh, so you too had the joy of meeting Professor Dumbledore, God rest his soul. I do so pity today's youth. They never will get to meet the man up-front. Only his portraits, all dozen or so of them."
She smiled when he asked her the same about herself. "Hufflepuff, Class of ninteen-hundred-and-fifty-eight. Professor Dumbledore was my Transfiguration Professor. That was back during the day with Headmaster Dippet. Odd old man, he was. Way before old Minerva signed on to the force.
I trust you enjoyed Hogwarts, then?"

"May Merlin be proud of Dumbledore's sacrifices, he gave more than he had to give, more than he should have..." Robert replied. "I was overseas for the funeral, and much to my displeasure, could not be called away from my studies, and work."
He had regretted that only second to not being on this side of the pond, for Tait, for Marcus, for all his friends who died for the cause. For those who still bore the burden.
"I never knew Dippet, but yes, I did enjoy Hogwarts. Tamis and I graduated same year, same house...her, a few others...I honestly don't know who's left anymore..." He didn't all he knew was Tait was dead, Marcus was in Mungo's, and Theo was 'missing'. Whatever the Ministry called missing after now going on eight months.

Avery nodded when Robert spoke of Dumbledore. She never did meet a man more devoted to his cause that Albus. The man gave and gave and never asked for anything in return. She still despised Snape for what he did. Oh yes, he had an un-breakable vow, fine and dandy, but he didn't have to make it. But it was typical for a Slytherin.
"I seem to be the only one from my era still on the force. I graduated with the former Herbology teacher, Pomona Sprout, and the former infirmarian Poppy Pomphrey. I do believe you knew both of them. Irma Pince was two years older than myself. All but Irma were in Hufflepuff. Old Irma was a Ravenclaw to the heart. The whole lot of them are retired now. Makes me feel old."
The old woman smiled and took a sip of her tea. "So Mr Shaw, forgive my rudeness but, might I inquire about your family? Do you have a wife or any children?"

"And between Madam Sprout and myself apparently we've had some rough edges that need refining. But that shouldn't be much a problem." Robert replied, as if every student in his classes was somehow surrounding the room in some form. Which, somehow wouldn't surprise him if it had happened.
"Ah but the old tend to be wiser, I believe its the whole reason, that we are the ones teaching, and not the children...who think they know." Robert countered with a small chuckle.
"I...have no family aside from my parents and my sister. Never really settled down. From graduation to about a year ago I was in Norway and Finland, continuing my botanical studies."

Avery chuckled a bit when he spoke of his relationship with Pomona. They, as all girls, did have a few fights and quarls, but nothing much. "She always did get testy when one made jokes of her plants. But I'm very glad she got so far in life. She did come from a very poor family. The poor girl couldn't buy a proper pair of robes. They all had patches in them. To my knowledge she still wears a patched hat. If not mistaken, it's the one I gave her for her 19th birthday."
She nodded when he explained his family situation, or lack-there-of. She knew how he felt. For the past....two decades she had lived alone, with the occasional pop-ins of Cody or Eulalie. "I see. Well a young man like you really should get a nice young lady. I, myself, was never one for child-rearing. I have my neices, nephews, grand-neices and grand-nephews. They are plenty enough for me."

He made no comment toward his mentor, well his initial mentor. And while, yes, he had indeed made his fair share of wise cracks and doings in his first three years in her Greenhouses, he came to respect them far more quickly than he leveled them. Not that he actually succeeded when he tried. At her second comment he found himself chuckling at the mere thought.
"Forgive me, its been a long time since I've heard that particular phrase or anything similar be directed at me. But its what I get for going abroad instead of...staying..." He said awkwardly, as a few memories resurfaced, memories he had only seen through pictures, through visual pictures in stories.
Perhaps the past hadn't died after all. Perhaps it was merely lurking under when of the unturned stones of Europe.

Avery smiled and nodded. She, too, was busy when the time for her to get married and have children came around. She was going through Auror training as well as acting on the West End. Add to that her job as Court Scribe to the Wizengamot, she barely had time to breath, let-alone marry.
"I do know how you feel, Mr Shaw. I was told many a'time to settle down and get married. I was always quite the rebellious type." The old woman laughed and took a sip of her tea, smiling at the younger man.
