Class was over, and that was one heck of a class to go down the teaching career of Mason. That was the first time he had to ask any one to leave the classroom. And on top of all that, he really wanted to know more this Ravenclaw. Was it him? Was it her? Or was it something else? Perhaps it really was the room, or the numerous runes on the floor.
He took off his robe, draping it over the back of his chair. He made a mental note to write a letter to his sister. With couple of kids, maybe she could help him understand his students better.

Once Arianna set foot inside the room, her demeaner became more serious. She had spent the last hour wondering why she had been asked to leave just for passing a note. He could have separated her and Matthias, but no. He had told her to leave.
Bitting her lip, Arianna walked slowly toward the teacher's desk, stopping within a foot from the front of it.
"Um...sir," she spoke quietly. "I'm here. You...wanted to talk to me?"

He gestured at the chair on the other side of the desk, before sitting down himself. "Have a seat please," he said. This was the tricky part, he had to make sure he was polite and gentle, and to convey the right idea. Not something he was very good at.
"Miss, do you know I had to ask you to leave earlier and come back now?" he asked, thinking being direct was probably a better approach.

Arianna moved to the chair and sat down. She pondered over the question, finding it a bit difficult to figure out exactly why what she had done was such a problem. It wasn't like she was being rambunctious and rude. But then...maybe Mason found such things rude.
"Because I passed a note in class?" the girl finally answered, her face crinkled slightly. She was expecting him to take points off, but...would he do anything more? Why else would he kick her out of class? Oh, no. What if he gave her detention?

"That was part of the reason. Passing a note, which has nothing to do with class material, is not a very respectful behaviour don't you agree?" he responded. He agreed that she not paying attention bothered him, but that's not the reason.
"Correct me if I am wrong, but you never seem very enthusiastic towards runes. You always appear to be somewhat..." he paused, looking for the right word. "...occupided in class. Today was the only time you seem to be really...here. Am I right?"

Arianna's lips formed into a silent 'O'. She really hadn't realized she'd not been as attentive in classes as usual. It took her only a few moments to realize why, though.
"I just..." she paused and sighed before starting again. "The whole one-on-one thing makes me nervous. There's no one else around to answer or ask questions, so I have to do it all. I might be a Ravenclaw, sir, but I don't always know the right answers. I suppose I thought I wouldn't have to risk looking stupid if it looked like I wasn't paying attention."

"Being in Ravenclaw does not mean you always know the answer," he shook his head. He would not say it out loud, but her explanation sounded rather weak, and contradicting. "If you know all the answers, then you most certainly would not be sitting in a class trying to learn the material would you?"
"Class participation is not about knowing the right answer. As to your nervousness," he gave a brief pause. He thought smaller class was a better way to teach. That way, each student could have more attention. Apparently, too small of a class could be a bad thing too. "I had no idea about that. Most classes in the upper year tend to be smaller in size, as you notice."

"Yes," Arianna replied with a small nod. How could she not notice? Heck, she sometimes wondered what all the other sixth years were doing. Did they not have any classes? Most of her classes consisted of only her and Krissy. How could she not see that their classes were smaller?
"But there's always at least one other student," she put in, shrugging.

"And without that one other student, you were not able to concentrate nearly as well in class," he shook his head again. Good that the girl was only thinking all those sarcastic comments in her head. Because if she were to say it out loud, he would be quite angry. So he general attitude was still friendly and helpful.
"How about today? There were more than one other student in class. You shouldn't be nervous about having to answer and ask all the questions," he pointed out. "But you weren't paying much attention."

"I was in a bad mood today," Arianna put simply. It was quite true and she was still in an off mood, but not as terrible as she had been a little over an hour ago. "It might not be a very good excuse, but today was one of the rare days I actually didn't want to come to class at all."
She almost added that there was alot of stuff going on in her life at the moment that contributed to her bad mood, but she didn't want the man asking about it. It was all hard enough trying to comprehend it. Arianna had no clue how she was supposed to explain any of it if she didn't understand what was going on herself.

Mason frowned at the girl's answer. What kind of excuse was that, if that could be called one? At least she could tell him she was feeling a bit sick, or that she stayed up late the night before or something. But that answer did confirm his earlier speculation. If she was in a bad mood, she would be sulking instead of passing notes in class. She just did not want to be in class. He blieved in others' choices. There's a will, there's a way.
"In that case, there's really nothing more to say," his tone no longer friendly, but a bit harsh. "I want to talk about you taking Runes next year. As you see, you can very well be the only 7th year in my class, again. Have you thought about perhaps taking another elective for your NEWTs?"

Finally. He had gotten to the reason why he'd wanted her here. Arianna had had her suspicions, but it still threw her. Did he have the right to toss her out simply because she didn't LOOK like she was interested in the subject? She still got excellent grades in Runes. Maybe it didn't even have anything to do with her. Maybe he wasn't making it fun enough.
"No," Arianna answered, shaking her head. She had to keep herself from telling the man how stupid she thought he was. "There's no point in me taking Muggle Studies and Divination...well, it's just not an area I want to be tested in."
