The breeze blew lightly and Vanessa smiled as it gently graced her cheeks, the spring air crisp and refreshing. Her auburn hair swayed this way and that, but her eyes never left that of the sky. Vanessa knew how to ride a broom, but never really liked it all that much. When it came to heights, she wasn't afraid, but just as her mum used to say... if wizards were meant to soar, they'd have wings to do so.
Being pureblooded, you would have thought that Vanessa's family were just like everyone else when it came to flying, but they just didn't care for it. It was why they didn't dare hop in a muggle plane either. They'd never fly if they could help it. It was just their way.... but Vanessa did want to fly. She wanted to soar like no other member of her family... like no other human being.
Catching her attention, her eyes diverted toward a small bird that she'd known to be only her imagination. A small but unique bird, one colored completely yellow. It's song was that of a blessing, but also a warning as she had learned during mining times. A Canary... when it's stopped singing, trouble was at hand.... and then, it disappeared, and the song stopped.
Vanessa sighed and looked back to the clouds. All she wanted, was to fly...
....like a canary.

The night air was light, soft, exactly what would be called a perfect "date" night air. Honestly, Dustan wasn't sure how much stock he put in that kind of thought, but at the same time, his hopelessly romantic mind wouldn't wonder too far from such thoughts either. Maybe it was his father, how he'd always done sweet-natured things for his mum, or perhaps it was all those romantic tales he read late into the early hours of the morning. Dustan had a tendency to believe it was the books, authors that wrote prose and verse that tugged the strings of his heart.
Pausing for a moment, Dustan gazed out the window of a tower... and saw something he'd never expected to see. Was that...? Could it be...?
"Wow..." his voice cooed gently at the site. "Was that really a...? Was that yellow bird? This late at night?" It seemed so odd to see something so brightly colored this late at night, something that belonged in the daylight, not the darkness of the U.K.

A yellow bird? Hadn't she just imagined that there was one?
Another's voice awed at the sight, but Vanessa could hardly contain her own embarrassment. Had he too, seen her imagined bird? It was imagined... was it not? Standing and walking over toward the boy from where she had been standing... she had been standing there the entire time, hadn't she?... Vanessa smiled sheepishly at the boy and looked around. Was it possible there had been a bird just like she had seen? "You... you saw it?" Vanessa stammered softly. How could he have? Confused and bewildered, the sun set and now only purple skies could be seen.
The boy stood in the window, not yet out on the roof as she was, so she went over toward the window from the outside and tilted her head, almost wondering if she'd performed some magic without knowing it. Sometime she had a tendency to do that still... but her last time she'd done something like that was... years ago. So, did she really have a tendency anymore?
"I mean... " Vanessa corrected herself. "I'm not sure what you mean..." still thinking that the boy had noticed her, and that was the reason he was talking out loud. He was talking to her.... wasn't he?

he didn't know where it went, other than it flew off, but he was still shocked that it'd been there at all. A yellow bird at night, talk about a mealtime ring. The poor thing was going to be gobbled up by a bigger creature if it wasn't careful about being out at night. Yellow birds were meant to fly in the daytime and sleep at night, that way they were more protected. Dustan had to admit, that was one brave little fella.
At first, he was more than sure he imagined the voice. Late at night, seeing a yellow bird flying around, he must have just been imagining things, hallucinations taking over his brain. But then he heard it again, and this time he nearly stumbled out the window. It was a girl's voice and the Slytherin was ready to turn around and run. Girls gave him nervous, they weren't like normal people, they were, well, different.
But he was so confused by her words, she saw it, wanted to know if he saw it, then didn't know what he was talking about. A disembodied voice was frightening enough, but knowing it belonged to a girl, even scarier.
"What-- what do you-- do you mean you're not-- not sure what I-- I mean?"

Vanessa slowly crept around the roof, sticking her head just slightly in the window to get a better look at the kid. The ledge near the window was smaller, so to keep herself safe, Vanessa hung on very tightly to the windowsill. "The bird silly," Vanessa said laughing and shaking her head. If he'd seen the bird, than the canary wasn't in her imagination at all! However, though that was exciting in and of itself, Vanessa had no idea what a Canary would be doing at Hogwarts. She'd never seen one there before... well, not a real one, and frankly, at night Canaries usually didn't fly around. So, for the boy to have seen something was exciting!
The boy as stumbling over his words and Vanessa cocked her head just slightly in order to catch every last syllable. Had she said something wrong? "Well, I thought I was imagining the bird," Vanessa giggled, knowing how dumb she probably sounded. "So, when you say you saw it.... what did you see?" she asked again, wondering if they'd really seen the same bird.

The sudden appearance of the smiling face startled Dustan, to the point where he jumped back away from the window. Fumbling with everything, he watched her for a moment, moving closer to him, peering further into the window from outside... Outside?
Eyes widened as Dustan wasn't sure whether she was hovering on a broom, or was floating. He'd heard of that happening, but usually it was before knowing one was a wizard, it was the first signs of being a witch or wizard, magic by mistake. What was she doing peering at him from outside?
"A...a bird. A yel-yellow bird." That was what he saw, a little yellow bird flying right there, in the middle of the night sky. It wasn't smart for that bird, prey would get it. But it zipped away quickly, otherwise, where would it have gone?
