Ever since they had returned back to the school, Ryan had been thinking. He regretted some things that had happened in the holidays, but others he was happy about. There were many mixed emotions swirling about in him, but there was nothing that the boy could do to stop them. He was upset, but he was happy. He was regretful, but he was thankful, he was in love, but he liked someone else. Ryan had had a busy olidays, but he wished that a lot of it didn't happen. They had been good, but there was some stuff that Ryan desperately had to clean up, before it was too late.
The rain beated heavily on Ryan's window. Waking to the bang of thunder, and the flash f lightning shortly beforehand, Ryan yawned. He glanced at his alarm clock, finding the time to be just past six. Ryan got up, throwing his blanket away, and feeling the cold temperature that filled the air. He smiled at his cockatiel, who was sitting in his bed, in his cage, with his head tucked under his left wing. The boy dug around for some comfortable pants, finding his trackpants and slippers. He pulled out his new flanelette jumper, with a denim hood, surf-branded of course, and pulled it over his white t-shirt. He pushed his legs through his trackpants, and snuck his feet into the warm woolen goodness of his surf-branded slippers. A Lot of people didn't care about what brands they wore, and Ryan was just like that. He just wore the things that his parents bought for him, although he was labelled as a 'poser'.
Ryan wandered down through the common room, stopping by the fire to warm his hands. At last, he was in the corridor, and away from everyone else. He promised to meet Matty in the west tower, at the highest point to talk, and there was no way that he was going to break that promise. Ryan had mixed emotions towards the girl, and even though they had kissed, and they had spent the some of the holidays together, he only wanted to be friends with her. After the first time they kissed, and Ryan had gotten angry at her, not talking to her for a month or so, the boy had met someone that he quite liked, although he was pretty sure she didn't know it.
Ryan found his way to the place where he was to meet the hufflepuff. He sat down on a bench, staring out into the storm, laughing as he saw people attempting to run. The boy hung his head, upset that he was going to do this, but he knew in his heart that he had to.

Where was he? Who was she talking about? What was she doing? How could she have let this happen? Matty didn't even know if she was asking the right questions about the right people, the right situation. The girl wasn't wondering where Ryan was, for she knew that he was probably doing the same thing as her, preparing himself for what may or may not be a messy situation in the Western Tower. In fact, he was probably still in his bed at the moment. No, Matty wondered just where Leto was right now. Where he had been for the last months. Why he had left. Why Mike hadn't told her anything. Why wasn't he around? This lead onto the thoughts of how she had let this happen. The Hufflepuff had made herself a promise never to let happen with Jynx and Devon happen again, but she had broken that promise. But, the reason why was so clear, in this mud-puddle of a situation. She had fallen for Ryan, big time, and he had felt the same way.
The problem was, they both knew it couldn't last forever.
Matty hadn't slept well. Heck, she had hardly slept. The same pattern as last time, because everything was on her mind. The Hufflepuff was still dressed in the clothes she had worn last night. Chocolate ugg-boots, black trackies that were two sizes too big on her slender body, a black tee-shirt, and one of Mike's red jackets he had left with her. Her golden hair was wavy, and held up in a messy pony tail. Matty's green eyes focused on the fire in front of her. She had been here almost all night, just thinking, drifting off into short periods of sleep. She looked up at the clock in her Common Room, at it was a bit after six. Matty decided that she should leave now, for there were many stair cases to climb.
The Hufflepuff left the Common Room, her hands shoved into her pockets, and her face looking at the floor. As much as she knew that Ryan and her couldn't work, it disappointed her. They had had so much fun in the holidays, doing the usual 'couple stuff', doing on double dates with Seth and Tianne. But this was their issue, and they had to sort it out. The tan girl wasn't quite sure if she was still within Curfew, and although she didn't care much, Matty walked swiftly to wards to destination. As the fifth year found her way to the tower, she sighed, before opening the door. Ryan was already there. Her green eyes noticed the storm that had been thrashing the grounds all night, and saw a flash of lightning light up the dark sky. "Hey," she said softly walking up next to him, resting a hand on his shoulder.
As much as this was painful, Matty could still find something inside of her, that made her smile at the sight of Ryan. She valued his friendship much more than an on-going fling. The Hufflepuff dropped her cold hand, and sat down next to the Gryffindor. The girl starred out into the storm, not wanting to look at Ryan for the time being. "What should we do?" Matty finally asked after some long, but not awkward, moments of silence. This was their decision.

Ryan sat back, hoping that this wouldn't take too long. He knew that he still wanted to be friends with the girl, but what if Matty didn't feel the same way. Last time they had fought, it had lasted what seemed like forever, and this time, Ryan knew it would be exactly the same. 'The boy had feelings for another girl, yes, but for Matty, not really. Sure, she was pretty, she was athletic, and she was funny, but she just wasn't Ryan's 'type', though he'd never admit it. The boy was incredibly nervous about meeting the girl, although he wouldn't really classify it as a break-up. He didn't know whether Matty would be okay with it, but then again, you could fill a book with the things that Ryan didn't know.
As Matty entered the room, Ryan merely looked up at her. She rested her hand on his shoulder, making the boy feeling slightly uncomfortable. Suyrely she knew what this was about, surely she didn't have feelings for Ryan. "Matt..." He laughed half-heartedly, smiling a half smile. EH didn't know what to do nor how to act.
"Well, Matty. We know what we are like as enemies." Ryan took a deep breath in. "And we know that that didn't satisfy us. We know what we'd be like during a fling, you know, going out, and that that didn't even satisfy us." The lion paused, thinking about what he was going to say next. He grabbed Matty's hand and smiled at her. "We haven't really tried just being friends yet, maybe we should give that a go." He said. "Sorry for cutting to the chase, I just wanted to get that off my chest." He whispered. That went a lot better than Ryan had thought it would have, he was really nervous still though.

Matty couldn't deny that she had really fell for Ryan in the past, but that was the past. After Ireland there were threads of regret finding their way into her memories, causing her to wonder if what they had done was really right on their friendship. Sure, it wasn't the same as Tianne and Seth, for they just clicked like that. But for Matty and Ryan to date, they would have to work at it, and get past their faults. When Ryan began to talk, Matty looked down at the cold stone ground. 'Well, Matty. We know what we are like as enemies. she heard him pause and take in a breath. 'And we know that that didn't satisfy us. We know what we'd be like during a fling, you know, going out, and that that didn't even satisfy us.' When the Gryffindor paused again, Matty felt him take her hand, and looked up at him. Ryan was smiling, and in spite of everything, she smiled back. 'We haven't really tried just being friends yet, maybe we should give that a go.'
He was right. But never had Matty thought that the boy would have let out these feelings to her. She was quite amazed. When the commented about 'cutting to the chase' she simply nodded slowly. "You're right, Ry. I think we just cut to the chase, and didn't slow down. You're more than just a pretty face," the Huffle smiled, and gave his hand a bit of a squeeze. The girl could sense that both herself and Ryan were feeling a bit worried about this situation, before she added in a soft voice, while looking out the window. "No matter what, we'll always be mates, I promise you that." Matty didn't really find this saddening, or regretful, because she knew that neither Ryan or herself felt strongly enough to start a relationship like they had in the holidays. He would still be the flirty guy she met months ago, and she would still be the girl that teased him about silly things.

Ryan tried not smile. Where was all this stuff coming from? Ryan definitely had never thought that he could come up with any of this... any of this intolerable drivel. The boy knew his feelings for Matty, and he knew that they were mutual, but they just could not be together, and Ryan hoped that MAtty knew that too. Ryan and Matty had barely known each other the first time they kissed, as apposed to Tianne and Seth, who kissed only after a they spent ages together. Those two just gelled, and they were so close, something that even Ryan was envious of. Whoever thought that Seth could hold down a relationship, and that Ryan couldn't?
You're right, Ry. I think we just cut to the chase, and didn't slow down. You're more than just a pretty face. No matter what, we'll always be mates, I promise you that.
Ryan exhaled. He was so glad to hear that coming from Matty, this meant that their wasn't any hard feelings between the two. Ryan so wanted to be friend s with Matty, but he thought that maybe after this, she would hate him, as if he had used her. But that was the last thing in the world that the boy wanted, as he hated not talking to her. "I'm glad the feeling is mutual, I thought that maybe you didn't know what this was going to be about." He said, facing the window, watching the rain beat down on it. "You've got to know though, summer was so fun, its just that I don't think I like you anymore. Not to sound mean or anything, you're really pretty, and funny, and well, cool, but yeah." He said, turning to Matty.

Matty was still processing and letting things settle in her mind, when Ryan spoke again. She couldn't help but let out a small laugh still looking at Ryan. "Yeah, it's okay, I kind of guessed, but I knew all along that it wouldn't last forever." she answered honestly. You've got to know though, summer was so fun, its just that I don't think I like you anymore. Not to sound mean or anything, you're really pretty, and funny, and well, cool, but yeah.'The girl took in what Ryan said. She turned to look out the window, for her cheeks were blushing a fair bit. Matty took a few moments to think about her reply, though she finally gathered her answer. "I had fun in Summer too, and I'm glad that it happened, so that we didn't make a mistake further down the track. I know where your coming from, because I think I'd prefer you as a friend too, despite all your obvious pros."
The Hufflepuff turned back to the Gryffindor and smiled at him. "You're a good kid, Ryan Callahan." Matty admitted, before acting against her instinct. She kind of felt like leaving Ryan in the room, and let both their words sink in, give him some space. She felt like walking out, not only for that reason, but to reflect on what this meant, but Matty knew there would be time for that later. It wasn't such a heavy impact anyway, they had merely agreed on keeping their friendship on a bases of just that. Instead, the Badger leaned over and placed a small, quick, harmless kiss on the boy's cheek, letting go of his hand as she did so. "No more of that for the near future," Matty grinned, standing up and sitting on the window sill, on a diagonal to the outside world, and where Ryan was sitting. "Do you think we should tell Tianne and Seth, so they know for sure?" the teenager asked, looking out at the storm clouding the sky.

Ryan felt happy to have finally gotten that of his chest. He had been longing to say something, ever since they had returned back to school, his thoughts being to say it while they were on the train. But with Seth there, and Abby as well, he just couldn't; there was no way he was gonna show them 'this' side of him. It was just way too different from the Ryan's they knew, the cool Ryan, the flirty Ryan, the jock Ryan and the insensitive Ryan. But there was no way that the boy was ready to show this side to his mates, he didn't even want Matty to know, but there was no other away of breaking it off without showing her.
"You're a nice kid." He said, replying to her remark on him being good. Ryan wondered whether Matty was going to leave now, as they said all that they had to say, maybe it was time to go their separate ways. As Ryan received a kiss on the cheek from the girl, he knew that he had done the right thing. He didn't feel anything towards the girl, and not even the kiss sparked anything. Do you think we should tell Tianne and Seth, so they know for sure? "I think they'll find out for themselves, but I don't think we should go out of our way to tell them, yeah? It's just that they'll be all patronizing and stuff, yeah?" Ryan said, knowing that they would be. "Hey, Matt? Can I ask you a question? Is there someone else that you like?"

Matty smiled back at Ryan when returned her compliment. She knew that after Summer things hadn't been the same. Nothing had sat well. There was so much awkwardness. All the signs they needed to prove that the two didn't work as a couple. However, Matty was glad that what happened in Ireland did happen. It gave her a chance to get over Leto, and give her a new start. It let the two friends work out how they should consider each other. And, well, neither of them could deny it, but that had experienced allot of fun for the few weeks.
The girl nodded slowly when he put in his opinion about Seth and Tianne. "Yeah, you're right. I don't want them feeling sorry for us, because it's not like we're both devastated about it, right?" Matty commented, looking back at Ryan, to make sure he was still alright. Not that he wouldn't be, but, it was just instinct. His question caught her a little off guard, but she hadn't totally ruled it out. "Well, kind of. But I don't know if I should, like, I don't know if they're interested in me. I don't wanna get my hopes up," she finished, choosing to look down at the floor when saying this. "How about you? Is there anymore else?" Matty asked softly, glancing up to the lion.
