Jade walked in the Great Hall carrying a book. She was one of the only students there. It was still early, plus it was Winter Break and a lot of kids went home. Jade sat down at the Gryffindor table and grabbed a few things from the table and put them on her plate and then she propped her book against her knee and the table and began to read as she took a sip of orange juice.

Rael walked into the Great Hall and noticed a girl sitting at the Gryffindor table. She knew there weren't a lot of students who stayed over for winter break, or so she had been told. She walked over and sat down next to the girl. She recognized her as being a third year, but wasn't sure of her name.
"Hi," Rael said. "What are reading there?" Rael wasn't sure she should intrude, but she was curious as to what the girl read.

Kyle entered the hall, hungry for breakfast. He was actually enjoying the peace and quiet of the winter break. Last Christmas he had gone home to visit his parents, but this year they were going on a 'private' holiday to Hawaii. He took a seat across from two girls.
"Good morning ladies." He said cheerfully. Slowly his plate began to fill up with various items of food. Bacon, toast, hashbrowns and pancakes. After pouring syrup over half of it, he took a drink of his milk and started on his breakfast.

Unsure where to sit, she took a seat at a table, beside the one three Gryfffindors were at. Shy, Parker kept quiet, filling her plate with some hashbrowns, toast and a pancake. She started spreading butter over it, hearing the boy talking to the two Gryffindor girls. She hadn''t seen many Hufflepuffs around... Most of them were probably on Break anyways.

Kyle was surprised that the Hufflepuff girl had chosen to sit at the Gryffindor table. Personally, he had no problems with Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. If it had been a Slytherin, it would have been a completely different situation. Pausing from eating, he turned to the Hufflepuff. He recognized her as a second year from one of his classes.
"Hello, you're that Harrison girl right? I think I might have a couple classes with you. Not many Hufflepuff's around right now eh?"

Surprised she had been talked to by another student just out of the blue she nodded. Recognizing him from one of her classes or maybe two. "Ya. My name is Parker. Whats... whats your uh name?"

"Kyle Thomas." Kyle said with a grin. He could tell this was one of those shy-type Hufflepuffs. Going back to his plate, he scoffed down several pieces of bacon and one of his pancakes. There was just something about the food at Hogwarts that made it taste way better then his mom's cooking. It sort of made him glad he'd be having Christmas dinner at Hogwarts instead of back home in London.
"So, why are you all staying here over Christmas?"

Jade looked up from her book at the girl that had sat next to her. She smiled and said, "Just some random book I picked up from the library. It's pretty interesting."
Jade closed her book and took another sip of her orange joice. She then turned back to the girl and said, "I'm Jade, and you are?"

"I'm Rael," she replied, and returned Jade's smile. Just then a boy sat across from the girls and Rael returned his morning greeting. "Good morning."
Rael turned back to Jade. "The library is a good place to find random books. Just the other day I found one on how to clip a Hippogriff's wings." She smiled as she remembered how interesting she had found it to be. "I'm still not sure how insane someone must be to try to clip a Hippogriff's wings, though."

"I'm still not sure how insane someone must be to try to clip a Hippogriff's wings, though."
Kyle suddenly looked up from his breakfast. He'd never heard of a 'Hippogriff' before. Coming from a completely muggle family, there were still lots of things that surprised Kyle, or things Kyle had never really heard of before.
"What exactly is a hippogriff?" He brought the question forth, slightly ashamed of his ignorance in the magical world.

Jade laughed as she grabbed some food and put it on her plate.
"Yeah, last year I found a book on dragons and all about raising them. And then at the end of the book it said in big letters "DRAGONS ARE ILLEGAL IN LONDON" I couldn't help but think of the poor people that sat there and read that whole book just to find out that they couldn't raise one unless they moved out of the country. I mean, why wouldn't you put something like that in the begining of the book?"
Jade took a bite of her food and looked around the hall, "There aren't that many people here, are there?"

Rael turned back to the boy. She wasn't sure of his name but did know he was muggle born. She smiled a little before she answered his question.
"A Hippogriff is a winged creature. It's front half is that of an eagle, and it's back that of a horse," she stated. "It can be a fairly dangerous creature, but you'll learn of that in Care of Magical Creatures, which I'm guessing you haven't taken yet."
Rael laughed at what Jade said about the dragon book. "I guess they just want to reel a person into buying the book, only so they can be disappointed," she said while filling her plate. "No, it seems a lot more people went home this winter break compared to last."

Jade snickered at the boy that didn't know what a Hippogriff was. But she understood. He was a muggle born and everything was still very new to him.
Jade took another sip of orange juice and then turned back to Rael and said, "I always stay at school during the break. My dad, he works for the Ministry and is ALWAYS busy. Even during holidays. Ever since my mum died he has been drowning himself in work. So I prefer to stay here with my friends then go home and be alone."

Rael immediately became uncomfortable after hearing what Jade said about her family. Rael had always been uncomfortable in situations that called for emotions of sorts. "I'm sorry to hear that," she said. Her eyes became extremely attached to her plate. "My parents work for the ministry as well, but it's nice that you have a place to stay with people you like," she smiled weakly.

Jade could tell that Rael was uncomfortable. People always got uncomfortable at the mention of her mum. She understood, dead family members are a hard subject to talk about.
Jade looked back down at her plate and took a bite of toast. She knew she had to change the subject, but she didn't know what to change it too.
She swallowed the toast and then looked back at Rael and said, "So...um...do ya think ther gonna let us go to Hogsmeade before Christmas? I still have some gifts to pick up."
