Hogwarts: Where Do We Draw the Line?

19 November 2007. Has Hogwarts lowered its standard for employment or have the people lowered their standard of confidence when it comes to the school? For only sheer desperation or a lack of sensibility could explain the weeds of the crop that have embedded themselves among what used to be the prime pickings called Hogwarts Staff.
Thomas Bloxam, a well reputed holder of an Order of Merlin and superior talents for wandless magic, resigned three weeks ago from his positions as Transfiguration Professor and Slytherin Head of House. Why, one might ask? Quite simple, according to Bloxam, “I know when to keep my head out of the oven. I prefer to leave roasting to the chickens.” Not exactly a statement from someone assured by Hogwarts’ ability to function soundly in our increasing time of crisis.
And who could blame him? The tarnished and disgraced ex-auror Devin Brady has overtaken the position as Transfiguration Professor and none other than the vampiric beast, already opposed by the Ministry for being on staff, has replaced Bloxam as Head of Slytherin. An ex-auror who violently attacked a pureblood wizard on crowded Diagon Alley teaching students. And a creature, who forces students to enter wandless and defenseless into his classroom, is put in charge of a house known for purebloods.
Prejudice! The Wizarding World shouts in defense of muggles and muggleborns. Someone cries “mudblood” and we accuse “Deva.” But is reverse discrimination taking place within Hogwarts’ walls? How can we hold arms against members of the alleged “Deva” when our pureblood children are being held as Dark Wizards within a school we trust and support, simply for fitting the right criteria?
The Administrators of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry refused to comment. The Deputy Headmistress herself escorted me off campus at wand-point before I could even reach the Headmistress.
For months we have been scrying yonder for Deva perpetrators. Perhaps we need to take off our blinders, put on our bifocals, and focus on an opposite extreme of the same problem we may be having right here at home.
