[Kellen is not part of this scene. His future sister-in-law Magda, however, is. And since I don't feel like making an account for her, I'm just going to do it on this one. Also? Closed.] Magda Ashley had never seen a Pixie accident as bad as the one they'd had to take care of that morning. In fact, she'd never seen a Pixie accident anywhere near that destructive or painful, for those involved. She needed a break, and had decided the Leaky Cauldron was the spot to take it. "Hiya, Tom," she greeted the barkeep cheerfully as she took a table to eat lunch. She didn't mind eating alone occasionally; she enjoyed watching people, and Merlin knew the Cauldron was a great place for that. Magda'd been eating for about five minutes when she recognized a familiar face she hadn't seen in some time. She blinked a couple of times before standing up and blurting out "Claudia?"

Claudia squinted as she tried to find the source of the voice that called her name. When she recognized Magda, an old school-mate, she was a little surprised. She and Magda had never really been friends in school, but they were both ambitious and focused, which lead to a not-always friendly competition between the two. It was laced with a mutual respect, however.
It must have been fate that brought the two together that cold January day. Claudia hadn't seen Magda in at least two years, though she'd certainly heard about her.
"Magda, how are you?" Claudia greeted after she'd made her way over to the other woman's table. There was a certain coldness, a distance about her voice.

"I've been doing really well, actually," Magda said with a confident smile. If she noticed the coldness in Claudia's voice, she hadn't reacted to it. "Here, Clau, sit down and we can catch up a bit, all right? We haven't seen each other in ages, I'm sure there's loads to tell about each other.
"Now, you're still with the Ministry, right? Something in Accidents and Catastrophes, if memory serves."

Claudia was annoyed by what she saw as falseness in Magda's attitude. She'd never enjoyed faking interest in other people's business; rarely anyone cared about what anyone else was doing, why should they pretend that they were?
Still, she took a seat and played along. "Yes, I am. Actually, I've just been made a member of the Accidental Magical Reversal Squad," she said, with just the right tone of arrogance but nothing more. "And you? Are you a Healer yet, then?"

"Next month," Magda said, still excited at the prospect. She was virtually done with her extra schooling and training, and all she really needed was the official documentation. "But congratulations on your promotion!" she said genuinely. She liked to see people she liked doing well. "That's got to be your forte, right? I mean, no one could compete with you in Charms class; you were always the best."

Claudia was a bit taken aback by the compliment. Usually, these fake conversations were just a way to get the conversation back on oneself, not a way to actually show interest in the other person's goings on. "Thank you," she said, still a little off guard.
But here's where fate came in. Claudia did actually have something to say to Magda, and saying it face to face might actually knock some sense into the girl. It made it easier to say now that Claudia had warmed up to Magda a bit; the warning would have more gravity.
"You know, I read about you a few months back," Claudia said casually. "In the society pages. You're getting married."

Magda blushed. Sometimes she still felt like a school girl with a crush when she talked about Kearney. "Yes, yes I am. In June. Less than six months; my mother's all in a tizzy about it. Once she got over the fact that yes, I'm 21 and yes, I'm actually serious about getting married, she got all excited about it, planning like you wouldn't believe. I'm not even sure she'll let me pick out my own flowers..."

Claudia kept her eyes low as Magda spoke. The woman seemed truly happy about the situation; how sadly deluded she was. Didn't Magda realize what she was doing, marrying a Muggle? Blemishing her own proud heritage, and without a care. The Ashleys were one of the most upstanding, pure Magical families in all of Britain, and Magda was throwing that all away and ignoring her own duties to her race.
"Traitor," she muttered, though loud and clear enough for Magda to hear.

Magda immediately stopped talking and looked at Claudia, convinced she'd heard the other woman wrong. She couldn't have...Claudia? Claudia? What did she care? No, it must have been a misunderstanding. ...Right?
She cleared her throat deliberately, and slowly moved her eyes up to meet Claudia's. "What did you say?" she asked coldly.

"You heard me, Magda," Claudia said, in an even and calm tone. "And furthermore, you know that I'm right. You're willing to throw away everything you have and everything you are for a Muggle? There aren't that many of us left! We have to maintain our bloodlines; we have to. Are you willing to subject your children to a life of second-class citizenry? Are you? Because that's what you'd be doing if you pollute your bloodline with the likes of this Kearney fellow."

Magda was too shocked for words. She'd gotten a similar lecture from her two uncles, both of whom had threatened to remove her from their (quite generous) wills if she didn't reconsider; the difference was, she'd been expecting it from them.
"Stop it," she finally spat. Mentioning Kearney's name broke it for her; she didn't have to take this, and she wouldn't. "Of all the disgusting, racist, ignorant.." she began to rant, not paying any more attention to the words as she said them. She took a deep breath and looked Claudia sqare in the eye. "I think you need to leave."

"I knew you would take it this way," Claudia said sadly. "I knew you wouldn't listen to reason. I just hope you get yourself and your situation figured out before it's too late. Magda, I'm only trying to look out for you."

"Oh you are too much, Claudia," Magda spat disgustedly. "Don't try to pass your own prejudices off as 'looking out for me'. I know what I'm doing and I'm happy that I'm doing it. I love Kearney McCrea, magic or not. You're not going to convince me otherwise, and neither is any other ignorant bastard who tries to." Her voice was rising and now was getting to the point that the other customers were looking over at her.
She glared at those around her as she stood up defiantly. "Fine, then, does anybody else want to take a shot at the good, nice, Pureblood girl who's marrying a Muggle? No? Good. At least most of you still have some sense." She grabbed her purse and stormed past Claudia.

Claudia reached out and grabbed Magda's wrist, to stop her from leaving. She held her grip firm, and spoke slowly and deliberately.
"I am trying to help you, Magda," she kept her voice low, barely loud enough for Magda to hear. "There are some very powerful people who are not happy with your decision. I'm not threatening you, but they would. And I don't want to see anything happen to you." Despite the coldness in her voice, she meant it. She didn't want to see anything happen to Magda. The bloke, she couldn't care less about, but Magda? Magda had to get out while she could.

Magda's expression didn't change as Claudia spoke, and when the other woman finished speaking, she jerked her hand away and continued out the door without another word. She was so upset that she wasn't thinking clearly, and was probably in no place to Apparate. She'd have to do the Muggle thing and take the Underground back to St. Mungo's.
She managed to clear her head and calm down a bit as she walked, and really thought about Claudia's words. She sounded like she meant it. Magda felt a chill go down her spine. She wouldn't tell Kearney--she couldn't. He'd just overreact. Claudia was just trying to scare her anyway, right? She forced everything the other woman had said out of her head and left it at that.
