"More than you know what to do with?" she asked with a tease, taking no offence to his comment about spending money on himself considering her shopping bags were still at her feet. Her family gave plenty of time and money to charity so it wasn't a big deal if they wanted to spend a little on themselves. And the amount in one's pocket book had very little to do with being well-mannered. Allegra would figure out a way to make it up to him one way or another.
"Nothing major," Allegra answered his question taking a sip of her beer. He didn't need to know that she was probably going to write a letter to her mom and dad and then curl on the sofa with a good book.

"I'm 21, I don't need to be a millionaire. I don't need it, might as well spend it on someone other than myself for a change. You're just lucky enough to be that someone," Chad told her with a smile. It was until the words were out of his mouth that Chad saw the other meaning to the last thing he'd just said. Shaking his head slightly, he dropped those thoughts. You're an idiot, Chadwick. You just met her. There was the old Chad coming out in him again.
Swirling his drink and the ice cubes in it around in his glass, Chad had to stifle a burp that rose in his throat. "Oh, how polite of me," he joked when a fraction of it escaped his lips, it was sad that that fraction was still loud enough to draw attention, "Excuse me." Normally, Chad could burp with the best of them but right now didn't seem the time or place and it only caused his cheeks to flare up.
"Well, your evening might be a little more exciting than mine, " he continued, trying to ignore the colouring, "I get to go back to my big, pathetically empty apartment and do nothing all night."

Allegra smirked a little at the rudeness but didn't comment, continuing with her beer as he spoke.
"If it's so pathetically empty, why do you stay there?" Allegra asked, genuinely curious. She could easily afford a big and pathetically empty apartment herself, but what would be the point of that especially if it was just her? well, and the house elf he parents had insisted on giving her even if they didn't even have on themselves. Something about keeping her and Shay safe.

"I was looking for a roommate, but those seem few and far between these days," Chad answered with a slight shrug, "And I have no desire of going back to my old house unless Alfred needs me there." The man slowly sipped down his drink, realizing that Allegra had no idea who Alfred was. He waited until he'd swallowed his drink before speaking again. He'd already been rude enough without adding to it.
"Alfred was out butler," he explained, "If you're curious. He's been around for as long as I can remember and he still lives at the old place. He calls me for dinner once in a while." It wasn't a really exciting or epic story, but Chad felt the urge to share anyways. It must have been the drinks getting to him. He did feel a little light-headed...

"Butler?" Allegra answered a little surprised. She was pretty sure he had said he was from a magical family. "You don't have house elves?" she asked, wondering if she had been mistaken. She knew a few families who had human servants... her grandmother actually had a few on staff... but most of the time they used house elves.

"My parents didn't believe in having 'vermin in the house', as they so kindly put it, " answered the man, a hint of bitterness in his voice as his empty glass hit the counter rather viciously, "And it's a good thing too, because I can just imagine how awful they both would have been to any elves." The memories if how his parents treated one another was evidence enough of what they could and would do to a magical creature like a house-elf. The alcohol wasn't helping with this stroll down Memory Lane so Chad ended it quickly.
"Alfred was like a father to me. More of a father than my own ever was, " Chad told her, finding this alcohol-induced sharing session a little frightening, "Dear old Dad." There was that bitterness again as Chad lifted his glass, draining a few tiny drops from the bottom before placing it back down. He glanced sideways at Allegra before his cheeks flared up once again. "Sorry," he apologize, staring at the counter, "Sorry that was...I shouldn't have said all that. Sorry."

She actually hadn't heard too many people use the term 'vermin' for house elves. Most people who thought it kept them any way and just treated them badly. And those who didn't keep house elves were usually against the notion of servitude with out pay. Allegra's parents hadn't kept house elves just because they felt it was a little elietist. Aside from the cleaning lady, the gardener, and pool man that had all come once a week, they really hadn't had any workers.
As Chad went off on his family, Allegra stayed slilent and looked at her beer. "An awful lot for a first meeting," she agreed, offering him a small smile. "But it's okay."

Could you be any creeper? Chad's subconscious asked him, like, seriously? You like this girl and you're telling her how scary and damaged you are? Nice one. A heavy sigh escaped Chad, for he knew he was right. He'd just met the poor girl and he was already plaguing her with the delightful Embers family history. No one should ever be subjected to that.
"I'm sorry," the man apologized again, looking over at Allegra as she still smiled at him. That smile again. The one that made him smile as well. And the one that brought the colour back to his cheeks. "Any time you feel like it," Chad informed her, "Feel free to just tell me to be quiet. I tend to ramble..." He drifted off at the end, realizing just how much he did ramble.

"It's okay, really..." Allegra said, still smiling, but looking at him catiously, as if she were worried he might not be okay. It didn't sound like he had had a very pleasant upbringing, something she could never really understand, having such pleasant childhood memories herself.
She found it more interesting than creepy that he had confided so much to her on a first meeting. She had been told before that she was just easy to talk to, she didnt' know why though.

"You just seem like a good listener..." Chad continued, wishing he would just shut up. In an attempt to drive the conversation in the exact opposite direction, Chad questioned her about her own family. Anything to get the subject off him.
"How about your family?" Chad asked, "I have a feeling they're a lot nicer than mine."

"They're just regular I guess," Allegra answered with a small shrug, though she wasn't sure that was quite the truth. They had always seemed regular to her, but as she had gotten older she realized that the Thorntons weren't what people would expect. One of the oldest, purest, richest Wizarding families in the United States and they neither believed in flaunting their money nor their bloodlines. What was the point? Neither mattered in the long run and even if they did, there was always someone richer or purer.
But she had to say something to the man, otherwise he might think she was avoiding the question. "My mom and dad are still in the States, but they come over quite a bit. My brother is a sixth year at Hogwarts and he's a good enough guy... for a little brother."

Chad smiled slightly at Allegra's description of her brother. He wouldn't know what it was like to have a younger sibling, or an older one for that matter. It did suck being an only child sometimes, but it wasn't too awful when his parents tried to spoil him. But remarkably, Chad found it became boring after a while. He would have loved to have a brother or sister.
"What's his name?" Chad asked her. It was highly likely that the new ref would run into the boy eventually.

"Drew... Andrew," Allegra answered with a small laugh. "My parents say that the A thing was just a coincidence. They actually considered naming my brother something else, but liked Andrew too much to give it up."
She realized she was babbling about silly things and focused on her beer, sipping quietly and hoping she didn't sound stupid.

"Andrew's a good name," Chad told her, still sipping on his drink, trying to make it last, "It's better than Chadwick." Rolling his eyes, Chad grinned. Who named their kid Chadwick? It was almost mean. "You, on the other hand," he continued, "Have a very beautiful name." Chad flashed her a grin, finishing his drink before speaking again.
"Allegra..." he repeated again, almost dreamily, "I like it."

Allegra had to bite her lip a little to keep from laughing, not sure if Chad was putting her on or not. It was the grin that convinced her he was feeding her a line. The question was if he had been teasing or he really thought she would fall for something so corny.
"You obviously didn't grow up around Muggles who insisted you were named after an allergy medication," she answered with a grin of her own.
