Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Josh York
[ Character Gender: ] Male
[ Country of Citizenship: ] U.K dual with American
[ Physical Character Description: ] Josh is a tall, lanky boy of 16. Standing at 6’2”, Josh is the tallest of everyone in his family, barely by an inch. He is a fairly slender boy, not bulky and muscular but still fairly strong. He has rounded shoulders that are usually hunched forward, which is his way of trying to conceal himself and go unnoticed. Josh’s hair is naturally very soft and copper-coloured. It’s style remains the same, often sporting the wind-blown look. When straight, it falls just past his ears, but Josh would never wear it like that. He has light, ivory coloured skin that is hardly ever tanned and a very defined, square jaw line that comes down into a somewhat pointed chin with eyes that are a golden honey colour. Josh has very defined features that are quite different from those of his family. If one was to look at all the Yorks lined up, they would know that the children (except for Joseph and Alice who are actually twins) are not related. Josh doesn’t like that, but there’s really nothing he can do.
Josh’s dressing style if fairly casual. He likes to wear simple jeans and a t-shirt when hanging out with friends (although that’s a rare occasion), but mostly the boy lives in sweats or pajamas. He doesn’t like to be fancy or dress up, and he absolutely hates wearing a suit. Another thing he dislikes is school uniforms and while he knows they are required, that doesn’t mean he’ll enjoy it. However, Josh is a big fan of sunglasses. His favourites are aviator glasses and his square sunglasses.
[ Personality Character Description: ] Josh has always been a kind of oddity when it comes to social situations. One would think it would make him an outcast, but in fact it has made him rather popular. Despite his popularity, Josh is still a shy boy and is very hard to get to know. He doesn’t like talking about himself or his family, seeing as how they aren’t really his family. He loves them to death, but Josh knows what the world thinks of an adopted child, so he doesn’t really broadcast it. Josh is just shy in general, even if it doesn’t concern his family. Being from England and having an accent imposed upon Josh an unwanted spotlight while living in the States, which sent him into even more seclusion. Try as he might, Josh just can’t avoid the spotlight, but he’s learning to deal with it.
If he decides to open up to people, Josh can be a really sweet guy. He likes helping people and he doesn’t like confrontation. He would, of course, defend any one of his friends and family but that doesn’t mean he enjoys it. Josh really cares about the people closest to him and would do anything to look after them. He’s a caring boy and doesn’t like watching people get hurt. Even if he doesn’t know them that well, Josh is the kind of person who would step in to help a complete stranger in need. He likes helping people and can’t stand on the sidelines when it comes to a friend in trouble.
Just because he’s shy doesn’t mean Josh doesn’t know how to have fun. He’s a big goofball and he likes to make people laugh. He does silly things and makes random noises to make people laugh. Josh hates seeing his friends down, so he does whatever it takes to cheer them up. Josh himself likes laughing, so it’s only natural that he likes when other people laugh too. More often than not, however, people are laughing at him, not with him. Josh does care about that though, as long as they’re laughing.
Josh isn’t the kind of guy who would hold a grudge. He doesn’t like being mad and he doesn’t like having others ad at him, so he forgives easily and forgets quickly. Josh had a kind heart and can only be mad at people if they really screw him over. But his definition of “really screwed over” is pretty different from the rest of world’s perception of it. He has a high tolerance for people and doesn’t get angry easily. He just doesn’t see the point of it.
[ History: ] Joshua Damon York, born Joshua Damon Adams, was adopted at a young age by a young couple who already had 4 other adopted children. Josh was adopted at age three and remembers very little of his birth parents. They were killed in a car accident, so Josh didn’t really have a lot of time with them in his early life. However, Anthony and Jane York, along with Tommy, Laura and the twins Joseph and Alice, took Josh into their home and loved and cared for him as if he was their own. Growing up in an adoptive family was a difficult thing to endure all through grade school, suffering through endless taunting about not having “real” parents. Along with his all older, adoptive siblings, Josh became a quiet and reserved boy, rarely talking unless he was spoken to first. Even though Josh’s adoptive parents were fairly wealthy, no amount of money could ever make Josh feel like he belonged. It wasn’t until the big move across the pond that Josh started to connect to his siblings and parents.
Moving to sunny Palm Springs for his adoptive father’s work was not only a culture shock, but it was quite the climate shock for Josh too. Being used to the fairly cool temperatures of England, constant summer was rather difficult to endure. Josh and his siblings took a long time to adapt to the weather, but even longer to adapt to the social life. The kids were different here and all 5 of them stuck out like sore thumbs because of their accents. The eldest York siblings, Tommy and Laura, made friends fairly quickly while Joseph and Alice became the “funny twins” that everyone wanted to hang out with. Josh became kind of a loner but when his siblings saw that he was the kid that sat alone at lunch and was picked last for sports teams, they made an effort to include him in what they did.
Soon, Josh was starting to make a name for himself. As he grew up, he started attracting the attention of the girls as his looks develop and he turned into quite the handsome boy. Even with all the extra attention, Josh and his siblings had finally become closer to each other and it always stayed that way. However, as Josh grew, other things started to develop as well; strange things that he couldn’t really understand. Josh soon discovered he could move objects if he concentrated hard on them. He also learned he could make them explode if he concentrated too hard on them. For a while, Josh didn’t want to tell anyone about it and wanted to keep his secret talent all to himself. Josh succeeded in keeping it a secret for a fairly long time until his 11th birthday was approaching. He received a letter inviting him to attend a kind of school that was for wizards and witches where they taught magic. The strange happenings that had been occurring around Josh were starting to make sense.
Josh, the youngest of the adopted York children, was the only one to have magical talents. With no parents to ask about his magical roots, Josh always felt like an outsider in his school. When asked about his heritage, whether Pureblood, half-blood or Muggle-born, Josh could never answer truthfully. He wanted to believe that maybe his real parents had some magical blood in them, for it made him feel closer to them. But all Josh could tell people was that he was a Muggle-born. For five years, Josh attended this magical school in the States, being an outcast the entire time. At the end of Josh’s fifth year, his adoptive father’s job got them sent back to England, where he got registered for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
[ Pros and Cons : ] Josh is a very quiet and soft spoken boy. He’s peaceful and doesn’t like confrontation. He usually keeps to himself and doesn’t bother people because he doesn’t like being bothered himself. Josh treats people the way he wants to be treated, but that can often lead to him being left alone. Since he is so shy, social situations are always and awkward thing for him. Josh has very few friends because of his anti-social behaviour and most people think he’s just weird because he doesn’t talk a lot. He doesn’t like being so anti-social, but he’s scared of people finding out about his family and making a big deal of it.
To Josh, the family that he has is the most important thing in his life. He will always be loyal to them and defend them, even though they are not blood-relatives. However, he is conflicted when it comes to telling people about what kind of family he has. Josh loved his siblings and parents more than anything, but he knows the world’s perception on adopted children and sometimes, it isn’t a positive one. He’s not ashamed to be adopted, he just doesn’t like when people bad-mouth adoption. If it hadn’t been for the Yorks, Josh probably would have spent his life in the orphanage.
In some ways, Josh is a bit of a hypocrite. He values honesty, but rarely does he tell the truth. He values loyalty, but he’s still scared to admit his family is all adoptive. He thinks that by lying about himself and his family, he is protecting them from the bad things people might say, but on the other hand, Josh is doing that which he hates the most; lying. Self-conflict and insecurity have always been things that Josh has wrestled with, but he still thinks that what he is doing is in the best interest of his family.
[Role Playing Example:] The halls were quiet, the only sound echoing were footsteps walking through the darkness. Josh York strolled along, enjoying the peace and quiet. He liked being alone and this journey was definitely solitary. Josh had no particular destination in mind; all he wanted to do was wander, and wander, he did. His feet took him in the direction of the seventh floor, and the Room of Requirement. Josh didn’t argue with where his body wanted to go and he hummed a soft tune to himself. As he reached the floor, Josh performed the simple task of locating the Room of Requirement and thought about what it was that he wanted; a piano.
Josh sat down in the wooden bench, his fingers lightly running his fingers over the old keys, yellowed with age. He pressed down on the F key, listening to the sound echo around the dark, empty room. Josh glanced around quickly, knowing there was no one else there. He really didn’t feel comfortable with people listening to him play. Josh knew he could play well, but he would never admit it to anyone. Knowing he was alone, Josh turned his attention back to the keys and closed his eyes, letting the melody he had been humming a moment ago drift back into his mind. It was one he had just come up with when he had been fooling around a couple days before, just mashing notes together. Josh hummed the tune out loud again, his fingers sliding gracefully along the notes as the song vibrated throughout the room.
