Course Description:
This course looks at potions, the ingredients used to brew potions, and the effects of said potions. We will discuss potions, ingredients, and effects on a daily basis when classes are scheduled. During Double Potion lessons, students will put to use their knowledge and know-how to create assigned potions and will be graded on their ability of said potion by color, texture, and sometimes by way of testing in class.
Required Texts (varies depending on year):*
Years 1-5: Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
Years 6-7: Advanced Potion-Making by Libatius Borage
All Years: Asiatic Anti-Venoms
Required Materials:*
1 Cauldron (Pewter, standard size 2)
1 Set of Glass or Crystal Phials
1 Set of Brass Scales
Basic Potion Ingredients from an Apothecary. (Some ingredients may be provided depending on lesson, and as always if a student runs out of ingredients, I have many order forms for different apothecaries, but one may borrow ingredients from me until theirs have arrived.)
Attendance Policy:
This is a required class years 1-5 and for those who pass OWLs in years 6-7, therefore: Attendance is Mandatory! It's simple, you don't show up, you don't get a grade. There are no absences allowed, except in dire circumstances. Please understand, I'm doing this for your good. You are the ones taking the end of the year exams, trying to get into the next year, if you don't learn the material because you were absent, it does not fall under my responsibility to track you down and get you the material. Just come to class.
Tardiness is unacceptable. As simple as my absentee policy; if you're late, you lose your House points and will be subjected to another form of punishment, one I deem fit (such as cleaning out all of the cauldrons for the day, not using magic). I know someone may have a class way up in the towers and turn around and have a class down here, but I am willing to come to an agreement with you. If this is your case, tell me and we can be clear that it is all right to be a minute or two late. However, any other tardiness is highly irritating and may cause my temper to be shown, something we do not want to experience during class. Therefore, do not be late, or face consequences.
Conduct:
I expect everyone to treat one another fairly and respectfully. Arguments will lose points, debates will not. There is a difference, subtle as it may be sometimes, it's there.
If anyone disagrees with my teaching methods, Owl me and we'll talk. If there is disagreement over my lesson plans, Owl me and we'll talk.
I'm a fairly agreeable person and if something does not suite another I am open to discussion and changes if a concern is valid. That's why things are tentative.
Evaluation Policy:
Class Participation:
Like attendance, participation is mandatory; not only so you learn, but so I know what I still need to teach you. If I ask a question, I require an answer; if someone has a question, raise your hand, I'm not going to bite your head off. It's another simple rule, participate and be awarded (varies).
Assignments:
There will be in class and take home assignments. Again, simple rule: do the homework, get the grade; don't do the homework, fail.
Quizzes and Exams:
Each student will be required to take quizzes and exams on assigned dates. There are very few exceptions to this rule, that being you are in the Hospital Wing or you are MIA. Let's hope you are one of the two because otherwise there will be no make-up for you.
Extra-Credit:
My Teaching Assistants (T.A.s) will be awarded points as extra-credit.
