Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Full Character Name: ] Maya Castillo
[ Character Gender: ] female
[ Country of Citizenship: ] Britain
[ Physical Character Description: ]
Maya is extremely petite and lean, only standing at 5 feet 2 inches. Instead of being defensive about her height when other comment on it she finds it amusing and shrugs the remark off. Her skin is a creamy golden brown which darkens to bronze in the summer time and never seems to burn no matter how much time she spends in the sun.
She has large quizzical mahogany eyes that take on a reddish hue in sunlight, much like her short auburn hair does which hangs a little below her sharp angular jaw. Maya posses high prominent cheek bones and a stubborn pointed chin and a delicate nose. She has a soft mouth which always seems to have a simile tucked in the corner. She has an athletes body with hard lean muscles that she built up from daily runs, and riding horses. Maya always found it odd when other told her how much she resembled her mother because Maya could tell that she looked different from the rest of her family and she wasn't sure she liked it. Her father, Carlos, was a deep rich brown in skin tone while her mother had been white as snow with curly auburn hair and, like Maya was, she had been very short. Both of Maya's brothers had their father's dark skin and crow black hair while she was at least four shades lighter with her mother's hair.
When it comes to clothes Maya leans toward the simple side with t-shirts, jeans and the occasional skirt, but whatever she wears usually tends to show off her subtle curves. Maya always kept her slightly curly auburn hair cut short just below her jaw because it got in her way when she was riding and it was low maintenance. All she really had to do was run her fingers through it and let it dry.
[ Personality Character Description: ]
Quirky and eccentric Maya is altogether unpredictable. Violent mood swings that catch everyone off guard are not uncommon. One moment she can be quiet, serene and coy the next her not often seen temper flares into life. Normally easygoing Maya keeps to herself. It's not that she has a hostile nature, she simply doesn't trust easily. While not one to be called shy, Maya isn't exactly a social butterfly. She doesn't enjoy talking to strangers, but her curiosity drives her to meet new people and make new friends. She has a mischievous nature, but she is also soft and kindhearted while stubbornly determined. She knows when to follow and when to lead. When to speak and when to keep quiet. She has a knack of disappearing, and appearing much like a cat. She is clever and quick thinking, she knows how to get herself out of a fix. She is quick, silent, graceful, never speaking without need. She would rather listen then talk someone's ear off. She comes and goes as she pleases, and takes no more risks than necessary. Despite her graceful dancer like appearance Maya can be incredibly clumsy. She envies the elegance of dancers and can be somewhat bitter about her klutziness. She seems to have and erratic opinion when it comes to choosing friends because either she likes someone or she doesn't and there's not really a pattern in personalities. Maya grew up in a hardworking family, so she expects to work for opportunities instead of having them handed to her for free. Maya is always a little nostalgic for the heat of the Mexican desert she loves so much, and she finds it difficult to adapt to a rather wet gloomy Britain.
[ History: ]Maya was the third and last child born to a Hispanic family that lived in the depths of the Mexican desert surrounded by cacti, sand, and wild horses on which they made their living. Maya had to older twin brothers, Samuel and Gabriel, who were overly protective but at the same time they believed that she should earn her keep in a house hold run by men. Maya's mother, Kate, died a year after giving birth to her from Tuberculosis. Maya found no reason to mourn her mother because she had no memories of her, but she did see the sorrow her mother's death left on her father and brothers.
Maya grew up in a very large and old Hacienda which housed not only herself, brothers and father, but their extended family and ranch workers as well. She was raised around cousins and workers children so she always found someone her age to play with. However instead of helping their mothers with cooking and running the house like other girls her age were doing, Maya's father had her working alongside the boys her age. She learned how to ride a horse at age five, and soon after she began to herd cattle.
Despite her family's isolation the Castillo family was not lacking in modern appliances. They had the Internet, running water and all the other luxuries of life but they were limited due to the families desire to stick with traditional ranchero ways. The children of the hacienda, including Maya, were all home schooled together and they were all very close knit. Just a short while after Maya's eleventh birthday, her brother Samuel told their father that he wanted to travel to the UK to study art. Samuel had always been a wonderful artist, so even though Maya was happy for her brother she was sad to see him go. Maya expected her father to be reserved about Sam going so far from home, but what she had not expected was for him to suggest for Maya to go with her brother. Maya was stunned and at first she flat out refused her father's suggestion, but after he explained his reasons to her Maya found it difficult to say no. Her mother had a sister who lived in Britain, Maya's aunt Audrey, and apparently this aunt from her mother's side had wanted Maya to come visit her for quite some time. Maya found this invitation rather odd considering that this was the first time she had ever heard of aunt Audrey. Her father explained that when Maya's mother died, Audrey had contacted him and suggested that Maya come see her on a yearly basis so that she would be raised with a feminine touch. At first, Carlos told his daughter that he thought Audrey's suggestion was offending and had refused, but now he thought it was a good idea and he hold his daughter that she would be spending at the very least a year with her aunt. Maya had always believed there was more to life than the hacienda, but at the same time she had always been content with her active life surrounded by friends and family. The thought of going to school and starting a new life so far away from her beloved home terrified and excited Maya at the same time.
Within the month, both Maya and her brother were shipped off to Britain and Maya met her aunt Audrey for the first time. Maya was only slightly surprised to see that her aunt had the same curly auburn hair that she had seen in pictures of her mother, and that she herself possessed. Maya and Sam had almost the whole summer to get acquainted with their aunt before she school year started. After a while Maya found herself grown accustom to life in Britain despite the drastic change in whether. At first she didn't think she would like it at all because she was leaving her family, her horses and her beloved desert behind, but as it turned out she accepted Audrey and her husband as family rather quickly. They even had horses of their own and plenty of land for Maya's early morning runs. Just a month before school was about to start, Maya received her acceptance letter from Hogwarts. When Maya showed it to her aunt to see if it was some kind of joke, she was astonished to see her bouncing up and down with joy and running off with letter in hand to show her husband who in turn seemed very proud. After a while of wondering if her mother's side of the family was simply insane, Audrey explained that her husband, David, was a wizard and had actually attended Hogwarts himself. Once Maya had recovered from the initial shock of learning that she was a witch she too was thrilled and all too excited to start her new school.
Samuel found of course found out and agreed that it was best not to tell their father until Maya's first year was over, so they would be able to explain in person. While her aunt Audrey accompanied Sam while he went off to buy supplies for art school, Maya went with David to Diagon Alley to buy supplies for Hogwarts. Maya's favorite object on the list was her wand which turned out to be ten and three quarters of mahogany wood with a phoenix feather core. The wand maker told Maya with a wink that it would work wonders with transfiguration. The only thing to top her wand for the day was when her uncle bought her a beautiful eagle owl whom Maya named Kizer. She was even more thrilled when she learned she could take her cat, Tabitha, who she had brought with her from Mexico.
Before Hogwarts Maya possessed no knowledge of the wizarding world, and was stunned at how sheltered her own life seemed in comparison to those witches and wizards who had lived through the past hardships that the Dark Lord had presented. Maya made friends easily enough, but she was startled by the harsh and taunting comments that some at her new school aimed at her, weather they were about her soft Spanish accent or her muggle heritage. For the first time Maya missed living in the shadow of her fiercely protective brothers, but she never let others see if her feelings were hurt.
Maya loved learning about magic but it pained her that she was rarely able to go home and see her family over the holidays simply because she lived so far away. The hardest thing for Maya to adapt to at her new school was the whether and the lack of family. She desperately missed her dray hot desert but Maya had always been stubborn so adapt she did. The "at least one year" that Maya was supposed to spend with her aunt stretched into "until further notice". She eventually gained citizenship in the UK, and she was still able to go back to Mexico in the summertime. As strange and unexpected as her life had turned out, Maya found she rather enjoyed it, and for the first time in her life Maya wished her mother had lived long enough to share it with her.
[ Pros and Cons: ]Pros:Being able to go unseen and unnoticed when wanted Maya believes is one of her greatest assists because there are times when she simply wants to be left alone. She has a great amount of stamina which she built up over the years, and can handle herself in a fight. She's quick and thoughtful thinking things through before blindly rushing into a sticky situation. She is a good judge of character. She also has a knack with animals, horses and cats mostly, dogs don't seem to like her and she doesn't like them. Maya's has a beautiful, soft alto voice and she usually likes to hum or sing while working, however some find this annoying. She is a good strong swimmer, and she can run for miles at a steady pace without tiering.
Cons:When it comes to second guessing herself, Maya is a master. Maya hates hurting other people(unless they really deserve it), and she feels awful when her temper gets the better of her Maya is somewhat of a pacifist, she despises fighting and she thinks it is a stupid waste of time, but when provoked her temper is a force to be reckoned with. One of her main weaknesses is her terror of fire, and to go with that she is also terrified of sailing in the ocean. She doesn't trust easily and when she does she ironically ends up putting her trust in the wrong people.
[ Role Playing Example: ] Maya tugged her left rein ever so lightly and Ezra skipped instantly in the same direction, cutting off the terrified calf as it desperately tried to return to its mother. Maya's mahogany eyes flashed red in setting sunlight as they flicked right and left to make sure her brothers had cut off the calf's only other escape routs. At the same moment that the calf bellowed for its mother, Maya hefted the heavy rope in her slender hand and taped her heels to Ezra's flanks. Her horse surged forward underneath her right on cue and the two of them raised the calf across the open field. Maya swung the rope over her head before she sent if flying toward her pray. It caught snugly around the calf's neck and before the rope had even grown taut, Maya had slid from Ezra's back landing easily on the balls of her feet.
In the next few moments she had the calf tied down, and her father came forward to tag its ear. Maya's small hands moved deftly as she quickly undid her knots and released the calf. The corners of her mouth curved up slightly in a small smile as she watched the calf reunite with his mother. A large hand came down on her shoulder, and Maya's eyes flicked up to look though her auburn bangs at her father's smiling face. "I'm going to miss you Mija," his voice thick with suppressed emotion. "I know Papa. I miss you every year," she said softly in reply. Her father's brushed her cheek gently with brown callused finger tips and sighed, "If only your mother could see how you turned out, a witch! You are so like her...". He trailed off and Maya looked away, feeling her cheeks flush with embarrassment. "I better go finish packing," she said and pulled away from his touch to retrieve her horse. "I'm going to miss you too Ezra," she whispered to him as she led him back to the hacienda and her last night at home before she left for Hogwarts.
