[ Full Character Name: ] Professor June Fletcher
[ Character Gender: ] Female
[Character Age/Birthdate:] 59/ February 22, 1950
[ Position : ] Divination Professor
[ Country of Citizenship: ] England
[ Physical Character Description: ] For a woman of her age, June is in fantastic shape. Since a young age, she was always the athletic type and liked to stay in shape. She is also the kind of woman who refuses to succumb to old age and does her best to keep herself in good shape. However, she is still a fairly round woman, simply because she is so short. Standing at only 5’3”, June has the appearance of sweet little lady, but looks can be deceiving. Her reddish brown hair normally stands on end, giving off the impression that she either just flew in from a storm or poked a finger in an electrical outlet. She has kind green eyes, flecked with gold in the right sunlight, surrounded by thick framed glasses and a kind grin. However, both her eyes and a her smile have hints of mischief in them. One has to look closely to notice it, but it is there. June has an innocent and almost childish aura about her and her looks certainly match her personality.
There are many words to describe the dress code of June Fletcher. “Elegant” is not one of them. More often than not, June is dressed in Muggle clothing, although she’s not ever really put together. Her wardrobe is a mish-mash of old t-shirts from rock concerts back in the “golden years”, old track pants that should not be worn by anyone, and old, stretched out sweatshirts that are usually tied around her waist. Her wizarding attire isn’t much better either; mismatched robes are June’s forte. June does not care what she looks like, because to her, clothes are only necessities in public situations. Unfortunately, June does not often find herself in public situations. Most people feel it is better that she does not go out in public.
[ Personality Character Description: ] One could say that June Fletcher is a little on the scary side. Most are intimidated by her free spirit and outgoing nature. She is very social, although her outings have been discouraged by many. June enjoys the company of others and is a big fan of children, thus the driving force behind her career as an educator. She loves to teach young students and is a firm believer in the art of Divination and it has become her life. It is suspected that the many, many hours of researching and travelling around the world to perfect the art has led to her reputation of being a little…out there.
Not much can phase June Fletcher. She has triumphed over a lot in her life, but it might have something to do with her spacey nature that makes her so oblivious to all that goes on around her. Confrontation does not bother June at all, and she is not a fan of punishment in the classroom. As a young student, June received many detentions for silly things like talking and blowing things up in class, and because of this her distaste for that punishment grew. The most June would ever do in the form of reprimanding would be an extra homework assignment. However, it is likely that she would forget about it by the time it was due and become entirely unnecessary.
Despite her outer appearance of being completely lost in every day life, June is fairly grounded. She knows right from wrong and has had many life experiences to prove it. She can discipline when it is entirely necessary (such as violence in the classroom) but she does not enjoy silencing students who wish to speak their mind. She is a strong advocator of free speech and would never take that right from students. June encourages class discussions, no matter what their nature is, but she knows when a conversation needs to be ended before it gets out of hand. She is a kind, sweet woman, even though she can be a little odd. June would never do anything to hurt someone intentionally and takes the thoughts and feelings of her students into consideration above all else.
[ History: ] June Abigail Fletcher was born on a cold, windy day in February; the 22nd to be exact. The year was 1950 and in the Muggle world, life was a strange thing. Wars were going on around them, especially in the United States when June made her grand entrance. Music, theatre and television were becoming mainstream; the “rock ‘n’ roll” era was coming into existence and June was right in the middle of it. Her Muggle parents were free-spirited, anything goes kind of people and it was embedded in June to be the same. Throughout her childhood, June found herself more in the music scene than in the school scene. Her parents didn’t deem school necessary and were much too interested in the beatnik life of music and poetry. Growing up in such an environment certainly left it’s mark on June and caused her to be a bit of an outcast later in life.
For her first 10 years, June was allowed to do what she wanted, when she wanted without too many boundaries or rules. However, on her 11th birthday, everything started to change. The 60s had rolled into the United States and it was a time of peace and love for all. June, on the other hand, had her world turned upside down. While visiting her grandparents for a summer in Europe, it had come to her knowledge that they were even more bizarre than her parents. They turned out to be magical folk who had requested she attend (had she shown magical talent) a school for witches and wizards called Hogwarts. June was forced to leave her parents behind and stay with her grandparents in order to attend this place that apparently was going to teach her magic.
June’s airy nature was simply frowned upon once she arrived at Hogwarts. In the house of Rowena Ravenclaw, June made very little friends, but received plenty of nicknames including Looney Juney. Her only friends, it seemed, were her cat Max and her owl Lou. She was an oddball of sorts, but always did well in her classes. One class that she exceeded in was that of Divination. Coming into it in her third year, June became very interested in the idea of being able to make predictions and tell the future. As it turned out, she had a very rare talent for it, a skill, that was known as the Sight. Her professor informed her that she was indeed a Seer and that she must follow it and learn to hone her skills for the rest of her life. Unfortunately, June’s free spirit took over and trumped her professor’s advice. At least for a few years.
When June left school, she didn’t bother staying in the wizarding world. The 70s were on their way and considering she missed the 60s, June had a lot to make up for. However, try as she might, she simply couldn’t shake her natural talent. Because she'd decided to stay in the Muggle world, June had absolutely no idea of the horrors occuring in her other world. Later, when she discovered the atrocities, she wondered if her Inner Eye had been trying to tell her of it and that was why she couldn't shake the feeling.
At age 19, June met up with a band called The Legacy backstage after a concert with her friends. She spent the night with the lead singer and after a long following day of drinking and other activities, she ended up on the road with the band. For nearly three years, she continued a romance with the band member. They travelled all over the world and for most of that time, all thoughts of magic and Seeing was completely shut out of her mind. It wasn’t until one night after a show that it all came rushing back. While sitting and having a beer with the guys, June suddenly went rigid. She stared straight ahead of her, not moving at all until she started speaking:
Great tragedy on the Highway Alaska. Twisted metal will end the legacy.
She had no memory of what had happened that night and all those around her were too drunk to remember. That was, until the next day when the band’s tour bus was in a multi-car crash on the Alaska highway and the lead singer, June’s boyfriend, was killed.
It took June a long time to recover from the loss of her boyfriend, but it hadn’t changed her permanently. Her airy personality came back to her and she found a way to cope with her loss. She continued travelling around the world, only this time she did it on her own. As she enjoyed so much, June kept attending concerts until another prediction came to her:
Wake up, number 5. Wake up.
Several times, June repeated this sentence until she snapped out of it. Not remembering what had happened, June will had a feeling that there was something she was meant to do. In a panic, she made her way back to her parents, only to find out that they were on vacation. Luckily, June was able to find them before tragedy struck. By chance, June caught her parents as they were crossing a small bridge. As she approached, the bridge started to sway. Immediately, June knew what was going to happen. The suspension on the bridge gave way and the cars on it crashed into the river below. June leaped into the water, managing to pull only her mother out of the wreckage. Four people died that day.
June spent the next few years until she was in her early 30s with her mother, taking care of her as she grew old. She finally explained to the woman what her Divination professor had told her so many years ago. To June’s surprise, her mother already knew of this. She’d had magical talent of her own and was also a Seer. She had taken the news the same way June had; ignored it and thought that would make it go away. It was that day that June decided she was going to pursue her talent, learn how to control it, hone it and use it in her favour. Her mother died shortly after this decision was made, but not before June had promised she would do everything she could to understand this talent.
Over time, June discovered that Muggles had decided they were capable of magic. She studied both Muggle magic, as well as the proper techniques she’d learned at Hogwarts. She moved back to England, finding it more prominent there than any of the places she had been before. It seemed as though the study of this subject brought out her inner oddball and the free spirit inside her seemed to blossom again. Keeping herself locked away most of the time, June read book after book about the art of Divination, past and present Seers and the history of it all. One very famous Seer that quickly became June’s idol was Cassandra Trelawney. It was Trelawney that June took most of her ideas and inspiration from. But on her return to England, June discovered what she had missed. Now that she was nearing 40, June arrived back in the wizarding world just in time for the young Harry Potter to triumph over the Dark Lord.
It wasn’t until very late in life that June Fletcher decided to share her talent with others. She took a small teaching job as professor of Divination at and unknown magical school. That was until she received word that Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was looking for a new professor that she hauled herself to Scotland, hoping to snatch the position.
[ Pros and Cons : ] June is a carefree woman, often letting things slide that should be punished. Because she doesn’t like punishment, students often see her as a push over that they can manipulate and use. Unfortunately for them, she does have a rotten side which is incredibly unpleasant. She can yell and scream with the best of them and set you straight with one detention. It would probably be in her best interest to do so when it is needed so students get the message straight away, but her love for children simply stop her from being cruel. And because she does not necessarily demand respect, it is not often that she receives it.
June Fletcher refuses to get old. Her youthful spirit has kept her alive, in her opinion and she is very active, especially in her lessons. She’s aware that Divination had a reputation of being dull and a “woolly” discipline, but June is determined to make it a fun class for students. Unfortunately, her youthfulness has gotten her into more trouble that necessary. It gives her the reputation of being irresponsible and unfit to be a professor. But June knows in her heart of hearts that if push came to shove, she could snap into “proper teacher” mode. She just hates to be so authoritive though, so unless it is brought to her attention, she intends on being a kid forever.
If, by some chance, June does get frustrated with a student or a situation, she tends to overreact. She does her best to keep calm because that’s just the way she is, but if she gets angry, June really gets angry. She can be remarkably unpleasant if this rare event occurs, but it is also a wake up call for students. It is when she gets like this that student start to understand that she means business and earns their respect.
