Accepted! Welcome to Hogwarts.
[ Physical Character Description: ]
The Debussy family could have sworn that Adelaide was born with the same rosy pink cheeks and dimpled smile that she is so prone to wear day in and day out. Time has been good to Adelaide as she doesn't look a day over 21...or at least that's what her friends tell her. Her wavy dark brown tresses gently brush her delicate shoulders, and Adelaide’s eyes are an electric shade of azure, the one thing that sets her apart from her twin sister, Isabelle. One stare from her intense eyes and one would be mesmerized.
She’s rather slender and has never fluctuated far from a Size 3. She’s never been the kind of woman to have curves, but she did have some sort of definition, enough to keep her satisfied. She stands at 5’4” with all of the grace of a prima ballerina. It made sense since every single one of the Debussy women in her family were forced to take ballet.
In the department of fashion, Adelaide always dresses with sophistication but simplicity, with some sort of quirkiness thrown into the mix. She will wear muted dresses and pastel shirts with oddly patterned skirts or brightly colored beads, and has been known to wear a rather large broach in the shape of a crouching brown bear. Her make up is always light and natural, never anything over the top. The most glamorous thing Adelaide will don is eyeliner, and that's only sometimes.
[ Personality Character Description: ]
Adelaide is the kind of person who will bring you chicken noodle soup when you say that you're having a birthday party. She is often scatterbrained and will accidentally mix up phrases and meanings, like "The early worm beats two stones with one bird." Err...yes. She may seem quite reserved at first, but all she needs is time to assess her surroundings. This supposed wallflower blossoms into a social butterfly after she becomes comfortable. Her imagination is something still very vivid, and in many ways she is still a child herself. She will find amusement in the smallest of things and might even find herself digressing terribly on the oddest topics. She never really outgrew her childhood, and finds something wonderful in everything around her.
However out of sorts she may seem, she is incredibly intelligent. She can link two completely unrelated things together with the smallest of molecular strings. She has an excellent head for science and mathematics, but seems to always find her head in clouds, particularly in the stars. She always found the burning balls of fire remarkable, hoping to be like them: extraordinarily bright and constant, persistent after years of existence, and yet always changing. Yes, it seems to be an oxymoron, but that hasn't deterred Adelaide from living that mantra with a full heart. She tries to do new things and have new experiences no matter what the outcome.
With her relationships, she always tries to be the steady friend who will catch you when you're falling. She's the strong one who will bolster you back onto your feet, the one who will encourage you to try again. Adelaide was never one to dwell on the past, and doesn't plan on doing so anytime soon. As for romantic relationships, her heart is as weak as her head is strong. She’s always a lover, never a fighter. When it comes to love, she dreams of the stuff fairy tales are made of and refuses to turn cynical like her sister. So what, every major relationship she’s been in has crumbled to the ground time after time? It just meant that he wasn’t the one. That’s what she tells herself anyway.
[ History: ]
Adelaide Cosette Debussy was the only child of Nicolette and François Debussy for eight minutes until her sister, Isabelle Oceane, was born. Her parents were overjoyed that they had been blessed with two beautiful daughters. They lived in Lyons, France, in a large house. The bottom floor was a complete dance studio, equipped with anything a dancer could ever need, and the top was strictly residential. Nicolette and François were cofounders of The Sur Vos Orteils Dance Company, a regional company that performed and taught pointe and ballet to the general public. Since birth, Isabelle (or Belle) and Adelaide were stretched and strained so that their muscles would be ready to start dance as soon as possible. Growing up, Belle was thrilled to be learning how to dance, the true girl of the family, whereas Adelaide wanted nothing more than to curl up with a fairy-tale by the fireplace, warm fleece blanket and hot cocoa at hand.
For ten years, Adelaide's life was set on a rigid schedule. Wake up. Stretch. Eat nutritional food. Go to school. Stretch. Come home to the studio and dance the night away (includes stretching). Eat more nutritional food. Stretch. Sleep. Repeat. Her parents had her life so tightly winded that she had no time to indulge herself into her true passions: learning and exploring new ideas, new theories. Her parents criticized the twins brutally, forcing them to spend hours alone in the studio until they could do whatever it was faster and better than the rest. Belle continued to immerse herself into dance, much to her parents' delight. Adelaide's interest in astrophysics skyrocketed, much to her parents' dismay. They wanted both of their daughters to grow up into agile young dancers to take over the company after they retired. It seemed that only Belle wanted to fulfill that dream, while Adelaide's head remained firmly in the clouds. It wasn't that she was horrible at dancing. In fact, Adelaide was even more graceful than Belle, more precise and focused. That was something that Belle secretly held against her.
The twins loved to practice in the studio at midnight. Belle loved how mysterious and dark it was, and how there was no one there to judge her or compare her to her sister. Adelaide loved watching the stars twinkle through the window, and how they were illuminated on the dance floor. One night the two were practicing a difficult ballet routine when Belle fell behind the beat a little. Adelaide advised her to turn quicker in her soft voice, but Belle couldn't take it. She couldn't take the fact that Adelaide was so good at dancing, and yet she didn't want to be. It wasn't fair. She jumped on top of her unsuspecting sister and tackled her to the ground. Adelaide gasped as she felt a crack expand in her leg somewhere. Belle was furious and began to pull hair as Adelaide's anger rose. For some odd reason, Belle was thrown backwards into the mirrors by a strong unseen force. The mirror shattered and their parents ran down the stairs in a frenzy to find their children in horrible messes. Adelaide was on the floor, holding her leg and crying silently, and Belle near shattered mirror pieces, nursing a bloody cheek. They couldn't understand how this could happen to their two children. After a trip to the hospital, it was confirmed that Adelaide needed a cast and that Belle needed surgery. Adelaide was excused from dance, but by some odd miracle her leg healed faster than ever.
A letter arrived with a heavy wax seal for Adelaide one day. It was an invitation to attend Beauxbatons Academy, a prestigious school in France...for witches. Nicolette was outraged and confused. François hung his head a little lower. He explained that his estranged sister was magical, hence the reason for her to be estranged. He realized that the gene must have passed from himself to his daughter Adelaide. Belle's level of irritation rose when Adelaide began getting even more attention and tried harder than ever to stand out.
From that day on, Adelaide delved into magic wholeheartedly, something that was way more intriguing to her than a dance routine. She set her mind to the work, really enjoying every single aspect of this new world, and immersing herself quickly. Her determination and desire to learn more helped her to become perhaps the smartest young witch the school had ever seen. It was here that Adelaide fell in love with Astronomy and realized that this was her true calling. As soon as she stepped into the beautiful planetarium-classroom she felt a sense of wonder and excitement she had never felt before. She never felt this way about dance, about her family, about any old crush; this was a new feeling she had never experienced. It was a good one that was for sure. As the class began, Adelaide’s mind began to click and put pieces of information and theories together, a step ahead of the rest of her class. The professor of the class recognized Adelaide’s attraction to the stars and took her under her wing. Her name was Professor LeFevre and she took to Adelaide as her parents never attempted to. Professor LeFevre encouraged her to chase her dreams and her passions, and never put her down or criticized her. Because of Professor LeFevre, Adelaide’s interest only grew and her passion intensified. She loved Beauxbatons more than her home in Lyon, and Professor LeFevre more than her true parents.
After graduating from Beauxbatons, Adelaide wanted to take an internship with Professor LeFevre, but her parents would not hear of it. They said that a girl as bright as Adelaide should go to college and so she applied to all the major European schools, praying they all denied her entrance. However, all replied with a hearty welcome. She studied at the University of Cambridge, taking advantage of their Institute of Astronomy. She graduated with a Master of Science Degree in 1996, and an optimistic outlook on life. With a degree from such an esteemed university, she was destined for the glamorous life of an astrophysicist…or so she thought. She knew all of the ins and outs, and she knew all of the back stories of every constellation…but what good was all of this knowledge if she had no one to share it with? What good would she be doing if she sat in a stuffy room all day looking into a telescope? She realized that she wanted to share her knowledge with the world…with the leaders of tomorrow…with those girls like herself whose parents didn’t understand.
It was 1997 when Adelaide returned from England to France, and when she visited her old beloved professor. She sat in on one of her classes and found the old feeling of exhilaration stir inside of her. She loved watching the students’ faces light up as Professor LeFevre would tell of Orion’s battle with Scorpius, how their little eyebrows furrowed in concentration as the professor gave them a quiz on the importance of eclipses. It was here that realized she wanted to teach the topic she was so enthralled with, here where she wanted to shape young minds for the better.
She returned home to find that her sister Belle had moved out and to the United States. She had decided to attend the Julliard School in New York City when Adelaide left for England and hasn’t been home since. Adelaide’s parents were complete and total wrecks, weeping over the heir to their ballet empire. Adelaide vowed to find her sister, no matter how long it took. Using extremely covert magic, she managed to track Belle down in 1998. Belle had become a large success in the movie industry and was making money by the boatload. She was surprised to see Adelaide on her doorstep one day, and even more surprised that her parents missed her so much. After a year of ‘thinking’, a.k.a. stalling, she agreed to take a vacation from the business to visit France with Adelaide to comfort her parents.
Adelaide returned Belle to their distressed parents in 1999. Belle finally understood that their parents loved both of the twins equally and never prized one above the other. In fact, their parents consented to moving in with Belle in the United States. Adelaide, however, could not join them in their home due to some troubling news. While she had been searching in the United States for Belle, Professor LeFevre had fallen ill. She had contracted a serious case of spattergroit. She was sent immediately to St. Mungo’s for intensive care, but not before ordering the Headmistress to instate Adelaide as impromptu professor. The Headmistress, respecting the senior professor’s wishes, sent an owl to Adelaide and asked if she would fill out the rest of the school year. Adelaide happily agreed, and so, in 2000, she became Professor Debussy.
She continued this job for seven years, loving every minute. She loved teaching students and becoming involved in their lives, helping them along the way. The students loved their professor, loved how reserved and yet how enthusiastic she was about her lessons. Adelaide truly believed that she had the best job in the world…that is, until she met Calvin Bates, the History of Magic professor. Cal had been a rather shy colleague of hers for a while. He had acquired the nickname of “The Brit” from his faithful students (and some fellow professors) for his all too noticeable accent. Adelaide had taken a fancy to him, but decided to admire from afar. She had never had a real relationship before, and the idea scared her. All of this changed one day when he snuck up on her in her conservatory-style classroom. He admitted that he couldn’t stop thinking about her; about how pretty he thought she was, and how he admired her intelligence. Adelaide was sold hook, line, and sinker. She too thought that he was incredibly dashing and smart, and the two hit it off into a solid relationship. Together they broke out of their shells and became two lively characters. The students loved their professors and approved entirely of the arrangement. The Headmistress, however, did not. She did not approve of interoffice relationships and fired Adelaide immediately, although some students did notice the way the Headmistress watched the History professor from afar.
Adelaide tearfully said her goodbyes and promised Cal that she would always be waiting for him. Cal swore that he would quit on the spot, but they both decided that his job was too great to lose, and that Adelaide was sure to find a job somewhere else. She knew that she was meant to be with Cal, that she would be with him in the end. He promised that he would wait for her always and forever.
She returned home with renewed vigor, promising herself that she would make this relationship work, make everything right again. She wasn’t angry with the Headmistress, but vowed to show her that she could make it without her. Cal was depending on her. In her search for a new job, she discovered that the English wizarding school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was in need of a new Astronomy professor. It was truly her deus ex machina, her miracle. It was just what she needed to start the new chapter of her life, the one that ended like her fairy-tales; happily ever after.
[ Pros and Cons : ]
Adelaide can be a very patient individual, and very understanding. She is also very dedicated to her profession, passionate about the very subject she teaches. She will go out of her way, and sometimes out of her comfort zone, to show her students something that will truly take their breath away. She is also incredibly gifted in ballet (something she likes to hide). Adelaide is also extremely intelligent, flying through academics with an unwavering 4.0 GPA. She can prattle off witty banter faster than anyone alive, making clever statements and intelligent conversation. Her brain is no match for her heart though. She is benevolent beyond measure, showing a gentle kind of caring and compassion for all who enter her life.
From the first glance, Adelaide seems like a reserved bookworm, and doesn’t really take the initiative to get to know others. Her social skills aren’t very good since she spent most of her childhood and teenage years dancing unwillingly and studying relentlessly. She has low self confidence, not feeling like she’s pretty enough or smart enough, probably a result from such high expectations thrust upon her by her parents. Her relationship with her parents isn’t in too good a shape, either. They still are proud of their daughter but are a tad bit disappointed with the path she chose. Her relationship with her sister is still a little rocky, but they’re patching up slowly but surely. When you first meet Adelaide, she also might come off a bit egotistical with the higher vocabulary that she uses, but it’s only a habit due to reading so many books.

Adelaide stared into the eyes of the man she knew so well, the man who knew her even better. “It isn’t that horrid, Cal. Everything will turn out for the better.” Her soft voice was filled with quiet optimism. She held his large hand with her gloved one, hoping that she wouldn’t have to let go. She felt a tear slip from her bright blue eyes and heard a muted pat as it hit the ground.
“Of course it will. It always does.” He was looking at the ground, speaking hurriedly and anxiously. He feared that he too would begin to cry, but knew that he must be the strong one. He fixed his posture, shoulders back, chest forward, and looked up at her unsmiling face. “Everything will be fine, Adelaide.” He noticed how the light seemed to dance upon her wavy brown hair, such a happy dance for such a somber occasion.
The train in the distance announced its arrival with two long hoots and an emission of steam. He cupped her head in his hand and smiled that goofy loving smile, a façade she could see through easily.
“You’ll find your way, kiddo. You’ve got a good head on those shoulders.” She managed a small grin, but it faded quickly. Her expression became more serious as another tear fell down her face.
“We don’t have forever, Cal. I’m 36, you know. I want…” Although she didn’t finish her statement, the two understood each other perfectly.
“I want a family more than you can understand, Adelaide, but you do want to continue teaching, right?” He tilted his head to the side, a little confused. He only wanted to support her in endeavors she wanted to undertake.
“I…I do.” She blushed at the words as did her boyfriend. “I mean…I do want to teach.”
“Then what are you waiting for?” He asked soothingly. “I’ll always be here. Always.”
The train pulled into the station with perfect timing. Adelaide looked at the large train and then back to Cal. They shared a quick kiss before saying goodbye, before she began her new life in England, miles away from the one she loved.
