The corner of Maya's lips, which were pale with cold, tugged slightly upward as she leaned forward to rub the small green pare with her slender index finger. The small fruit jumped and twisted as if her gentle touch had tickled it. Being a Hufflepuff with their dormitory so close by, Maya often came to the kitchens for late night munchies when her restless mind refused to sleep. House Elves, Maya had learned, went all over the world and a few of them had picked up the recipes for some of Maya's favorite home cooked Mexican dishes.
The painting swung open and the pair off Hufflepuffs received both a physical and vocal warm welcome. The house elves called out cheerful greetings, they always seemed to delighted when ever there were visitors. Maya hadn't realized how incredibly tense she had been, huddled into a small ball in Beau's arms, until a sigh of relief escaped her lips as the warm kitchen air enveloped her along with the aromas of fresh baked goodies.
Suddenly half of the house elves seemed to realize that the pair of students had appeared in a somewhat soggy condition. Once more Maya's cheeks flushed pink with embarrassment at the thought of her little unplanned swim, and she peeked a glance up at Beau from behind her dripping bangs. The house elves ushered the pair inside and slowly Maya felt her cold aching muscles starting to relax. Maya realized that now would be the time to slip out of Beau's cradling arms, he was probably tired of holding her in her drenched clothes anyway. Maya attempted to make herself move, but she was terribly stiff and yet very comfortable cuddled against Beau's warm chest.

The cold from Maya's soaken body was seeping close to Beau's own form and he was thankful for the warmth of first the castles in general, and then the heat of the kitchens. He held the girl a little closer to himself instinctively as the house elves surged forward, attemping to find out what was wrong. Some of them dispersed as he sent a hard look in their direction, feeling obligated to keep Maya from anything that could potentially harm her more.
While he didn't want to ask the house elves for too much help, or let them near Maya - as he was feeling protective of her, he wasn't sure where he should put her down. Or just keep a hold of her? He wanted to keep her closer, sure, but he didn't know what would be best.
" Er... where would be good...? " He struggled to form words, but the house elves seemed to know what he was asking them for. They indicated over to the roaring fire in the next section of the kitchens, probably a general source of heat in the castle.
" Maya? D'you want to sit down or just...? " Beau wouldn't really mind letting her sit off on her own, but he felt responsible for all of this.

Maya was slightly overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the kitchens, so it took her a few moments to understand what Beau was asking her. "What? Oh..." she said as she blinked at the benches for a few dumbstruck moments before nodding vaguely. "Yeah," she said softly as she tried to sit up slightly in Beau's arms, "I'll sit." Maya bit her lip as she tried to figure out the best way to slip out of Beau's hold, or if she should just wait for him to put her down. In the end Maya was able to squirm a little and jumped down. However, it was a longer jump than she had at first registered because Beau was significantly taller than she.
Maya's wet socks hit the stone floor and right away started to slide. Instinctively Maya clutched Beau's hand for support so she wouldn't end up flat on her back, the two Hufflepuffs had already been through that little incident together and Maya saw no need for a repeat. Her face flushed and she could feel her ears turning slightly pink as well. "Sorry," she mumbled quietly as she quickly pulled her hand away and turned to find a female house elf eying her oddly.
Maya walked carefully over to the bench and sat before she had any more risk of falling over. The roaring fire felt blissfully hot on her damp skin as Maya started to peel off her wet clothes. First was Beau's borrowed shirt which she draped across the bench close to the fire to dry. By the time she got her heavy with water sweatshirt off and turned to put it next to the shirt, it was gone. "What...?" Maya said looking around, confused. She looked around, skeptical as to where the shirt might have gone and she glimpsed a small figure trotting away with shirt in hand. While still pondering this oddity, Maya felt a soft tug at the wet sweatshirt in her hand. Surprised, Maya looked down to see another house elf pulling at the fabric. "We will clean them for you miss," the house elf told her in a deep blow horn like voice. "Oh...yeah," Maya said and obediently let go. As soon as Maya peeled off her soaked socks those were whisked away too.
Glancing up at Beau, Maya gave him a bemused smile and promised that she would make sure that he got his shirt back. Just then another house elf appeared at her knee, offering a wonderfully looking heavy blanket. Maya smiled gratefully as she snuggled into the soft fabric, but before she could thank the elf she was gone and back again, this time with a steaming cup of hot tea. "Thank you," Maya whispered as she took the cup. "Do you want something?" Maya asked glancing up at Beau, she felt bad because he was almost as wet as she was.

He wanted to shiver, let the cold overtake him, but it was the thought of Maya being twice as cold, and probably twice as wet, that held him off. He clenched his jaw instead, nodding at her reply. Just as he was trying to figure out where to put her so she could sit, she managed to slip out of his arms. Soon after though he was scrambling to hold her hand and stabilize her a bit more. The Hufflepuff smiled at the girl he was looking at, finding the almost fall a little bit awkward feeling, but not too bad. At least she hadn't fallen over, too.
" Don't be, s'ok. "
He still felt bad about the whole situation, but he tried to busy himself with doing something while Maya took off the soaking wet clothes. He didn't want to be too awkward, so he turned around and gave her some privacy. Or at least as much privacy that he could give at that exact moment in time. He heard the elves coming and going behind his back and eventually turned to peek and see what they were doing. Once he saw that Maya was still decently clothed he made his way over, just in time to see the other elf walk up with a particularly warm looking blanket. Beau sat next to her on the bench, tucking the fabric around her slightly so she would warm up faster. " Hm? " He asked, not having heard whatever it was she had asked him.
Once glance at the eager looking elf, though, told him that he had been asked if he needed anything. " Some hot tea would be nice. Are you... hungry? " He asked Maya, concerned still.

Maya looked up in time to see Beau turn around, and her lips twitched in a tucked away smile. She hadn't realized that he had turned around to give her some privacy and she found herself thinking it was sweet of him. She was amused and grateful at the same time and she couldn't help but smile at his courteousness. There weren't many teenage boys she knew who would be so thoughtful. Her gaze automatically dropped to the cup that was cradled in her hands as Beau sat beside her. Her breath caught slightly in her throat when he leaned forward to make sure the blanket was wrapped around her properly. Being the overly jumpy per she was, Maya's immediate instinct was to jerk away from the unexpected touch, but she held still and tried to pretend that her cheeks were not pink with another warm blush.
Before Beau pulled away Maya caught a glimpse of goose bumps on his arms. Maya carefully place her cup on the bench, hopefully far enough away to where she wouldn't knock it over. Carefully, Maya pulled the blanket off her shoulders and unfolded it another square so that it was big enough to fit two people under it. She snuggled herself under one corner of the blanket and with a shy smile offered Beau the other, "Want under?" When the house elf came back with Beau's tea Maya caught her lower lip between her teeth as she tried no to look too hopeful as she made her request. "Um maybe a chorizo biscuit?" Before the words were hardly even out of her mouth, the house elf was gone. "Sorry," she murmured shyly as she gnawed on her lip, "I eat when I'm nervous."

Beau looked up, wondering what Maya was doing as she lifted the blanket up slightly. Did she not want to be tucked into the warmth? Puzzling, but he wasn't sure what else to think. That was true, until she smiled at him and offered some of the blanket to him. He could feel the heat rising in his cheeks and hoped she wouldn't be able to notice the new pink color in his face. " Sure. " was all he said as he pulled his corner of the blanket around his shoulders to cover his body.
He reached his hands out to grab the hot tea from the elf, muttering a small ' thank you. ' He didn't drink the beverage quite yet, merely held onto the teacup for a while to warm his hands. Beau gazed away, to the fire, suddenly taken over by his nerves. He glanced over, though, as the house elf darted off with Maya's request.
" Nervous? Oh, you shouldn't worry, now that you're warming up I doubt you'll get hypothermia or anything. I hope. " He would feel awful if that happened. Beau usually didn't care too much about things, but if he felt responsible then he couldn't really take it. He figured that if the warm fire, the blanket, and the tea didn't help out then they could always take a trip down to the hospital wing.

Maya released the breath she hadn't realized she had been holding when Beau accepted the offered corner of blanket. With two people under the warmth of the blanket now, Maya had to scoot closer to Beau on the bench so that the fabric wouldn't be awkwardly stretched. Her knee brush momentarily against Beau's before she hurriedly readjusted her position until it didn't feel quite as awkward. Maya didn't really mind the close proximity with Beau, she just wasn't all that familiar with the constant flush of color that invaded her cheeks and the nervous flutter of her heart in her chest.
Maya smiled down at the cup in her hands as she listened to Beau talk. She chuckled softly under her breath as she shook her head. With a practiced flick of her head Maya was able to shift her wet bangs out of her mahogany eyes as she turned her face upward to flash a smile at Beau. "That's not really what I'm nervous about..." Maya was lost in Beau's ocean gaze for longer than she had expected while she wondered how those words had come out of her mouth.
The moment was finally interrupted by the house elf who reappeared with a steaming biscuit that was overflowing with chorizo. "Thank you," Maya mumbled hurriedly as she accepted the plate. Like always there was an accompanying fork on the plate as well. She started to nibble on the spicy meat and the sizzling flavor brought back memories of home. In an attempt to forget her little slip of the tongue, Maya started babbling while keeping her gaze firmly fixed on her plate. "I love spicy food. Compared to my usual diet back home everything here in England is rather bland. Its sorta like the weather, it's always too cold and wet. You've lived here all your life right? Is it better in the summer? Summer is the only time when I get to go back to Mexico so I haven't experienced it yet..." She finally trailed off and proceeded to shovel food into her mouth in an attempt to make herself shut up.

It almost surprised Beau how nervous he felt now that he was under the blanket with the girl. It's just for warmth, s'all. She's just cold. His thoughts calmed him down, sortof. He couldn't help but wonder, though. His own thoughts of being cold all but disappeared as he went onto a new set of worries. Was he sitting too close? Did she need more blanket? He didn't want to be a blanket hog of course, the main purpose of the item was for Maya to get warmer.
' That's not what I'm nervous about... ' Beau looked up, his blue green eyes catching onto hers, noticing the way the mahogany flickered in the light of the fire. He mentally shook himself, then questioned, " What do you...? " He trailed off, though as his question was stopped by a house elf giving Maya her food. He looked down at the ground, a little put off.
Beau nodded along slightly, he had somewhat forgotten that Maya was from Mexico. Save for the accent, there weren't any indicators that she came from somewhere so far away. " All my life, yeh. It is better in the summer. Sortof. " He smiled a somewhat crooked smile, glanced back up at her as he did so. " Do you like it here, though? " Compared to what she said, Mexico sounded intriguing. And warm.

Maya's heart leaped into her throat as Beau started to question her statement. How was she supposed to answer that? Maya gave a small inward sigh of releif as Beau let the topic drop but when she sneeked a glance over at him he looked slightly dissappointed. How could Maya explain to Beau that it was him that caused her cheeks to flush and her heart to flutter awakerdly off beat in her chest. Were boys really as oblivious as Maya's female cousins in Mexico had complained to her about. Maya didn't have many female friends here at Hogwarts so her knoledge of the boy subject was slightly limited.
Maya was happy to go along with the change in topic and she mulled over Beau's question for a moment while chewing on her busicut. "Hmm..." Maya started out as she shifted her position on the bench so that her tiny feet could get a better angle toward the roaring fire. They were starting to feel slightly less numb. "Well there are good points and bad points," she continued after a moment. "I love learning about magic and being a witch, and the company isn't too bad either," Maya joked while flashing Beau a playful smile. "Mostly it's just the rain and cold, and being away from my papa and my brothers that keeps me kinda meloncoly..." She trailed off for a moment before she said something that she wasn't expecting to say. "I've also learned a lot more about my mother since I've been here because I've been living with my aunt, her sister." realizing that what she had just said wouldn't make much sence unless she elaborated Maya explained, "My mother died when I was very young. I don't really remember her at all."
