It was just about time for Curtis to join the teacher's good side. Did dragons even have good sides he wondered before adding to Ryan's answer, "With bad intentions and opinions from the start. For an example, if you get cornered in a dark alley with a wizard or witch trying to harm you, hexing them may be considered dark, but isn't dark magic because you are protecting yourself from someone who has dark intentions and who believes they are dark. However, if you are the one who corners the person in the alley way, hexing them would be considered dark magic since you are not protecting yourself or anyone else." It appears someon has read on too many books in his parent's reading gallery.

Of course he knew a lot about dark arts, but even so, Jeremy was thoroughly confused by what the Hufflepuff boy had said and he just lowered his head onto his desk. It was a bit of a surprise to himself to hear his own voice pipe up very softly, echoing the words his mother had told him.
"There is no good or bad magic. Only good or bad intentions." Well, there were those three really really bad spells, but they were the ones that only had bad intentions behind them. they didn't do anything if you tried them with good intentions.

Maddy smiled back to Sally. She was nice, but Maddy didn't really think that they would end being best friends, but she's been proved wrong before. Sally just seemed like the level-headed friend Maddy had never had. Maddy was so extremely bored, so she layed her head down on her knee. She wanted this lesson to be over with. When the Professor asked them a question Maddy merely looked up at her and returned her head to her knee, still keeping eye-contact with the professor. She may not have been looking at her but Maddy was most certainly staring.

Adrian stayed quiet and let other students answer the questions. He could have given a fairly good answer, from what his Dad told him about Dark Magic, but not nearly as good as the Hufflepuff boy's. Sheesh... He thought. Way to get technical! Jeremy also gave an answer, which seemed more to Adrian's point of view. No spells inherently dark. It's how you use them. He had seen a similar philosophy on a Sci-Fi TV Show once. It seemed to make sense, from what he knew of magic.

Sally did not really know a whole lot about "Dark Magic" Her Mum had been the only one in her family who was magical so Sally had not heard it explained very often. She sat quietly as a boy answered the teachers question. She watched as Maddy lay her head on her knee and suddenly Sally was feeling rather tired. She yawned slowly but quickly she looked back in the direction of the Professor waiting for a question she would be able to answer.

Blink. Blink. Blink. That was the only thing left to do after the attack of three answers; each of which gradually edged toward the right answer before hitting it square on the head. Never, in six years of educating had a First Class actually got the answer correct without her usual serious of rather amusing helpful hints. Oh, Tamis was not about to deny that she enjoyed poking and prodding the First Year class until they found the answer themselves. This was definitely an interesting turn of events.
Realizing she had lapsed into a prolonged silence, the Professor cleared her throat before addressing the awaiting class. Looks like her curriculum for this class was going to be in need of improvising.
"Mr. Scobee, the Dark Arts as we call it, can be considered 'magic used for an evil purpose'. However, that is a rather vague answer, but nonetheless a good attempt, five points to Ravenclaw. A dark wizard attacks me, and I attack him back. I see it as defending myself, but the dark wizard sees it as an evil purpose as I am trying to hurt him. Mr --" a straining of memory and a glance at the hufflepuff names on her list, "-- Sutherland is therefore closer in his answer, who pointed out this fact, so five points to Hufflepuff as well. But even your answer is just short of correct."
Her gaze drifted to the boy whose head was pressed to his desk. She was not sure if he had been intended to be heard, but there you have it.
"Mr. Taylor actually has it. Five more points to Ravenclaw. A hex cannot be dark magic, as you suggested Mr. Sutherland. A hex is simply a hex, when you cast it, it will always do the same thing unless the incantation is altered. It is not a living thing and has no concept of 'good' or 'evil' as we are wording it. Using the cornered alley example that Curtis brought up, if I sent a hex, curse, charm, anything at all at my attacker in defense of my life, it is not the Dark Arts. My intentions were to protect myself. While my attackers were to hurt me. Two different intents, two different causes."
Leaning back on her desk, Raynor waited for any possible objections, agreeances, or, truthfully, anything. They were a talkative bunch, and she was beginning to like their ability to be unpredictable.

Maddy listened to each and every one of the answers. She had thought the first one was right until she learnt the second, and the same with the second and third. Maddy was happy for Curtis, as he had earned her house five points, after all that they had lost in the other subject, they really needed it. She remembered the names Scobee and Taylor mostly for future references Mwahaha but also because this was a big grade and Mady didn't know half of the peoples names.
Waiting for the teacher to go on, Maddy tapped her left foot impatiently.
